Towards pp -> VVjj at NLO QCD: Bosonic contributions to triple vector boson production plus jet
In this work, some of the NLO QCD corrections for pp -> VVjj + X are
presented. A program in Mathematica based on the structure of FeynCalc which
automatically simplifies a set of amplitudes up to the hexagon level of rank 5
has been created for this purpose. We focus on two different topologies. The
first involves all the virtual contributions needed for quadruple electroweak
vector boson production, i.e. pp -> VVVV + X. In the second, the remaining
"bosonic" corrections to electroweak triple vector boson production with an
additional jet (pp -> VVV j + X) are computed. We show the factorization
formula of the infrared divergences of the bosonic contributions for VVVV and
VVVj production with V=(W,Z,gamma). Stability issues associated with the
evaluation of the hexagons up to rank 5 are studied. The CPU time of the
FORTRAN subroutines rounds the 2 milliseconds and seems to be competitive with
other more sophisticated methods. Additionally, in Appendix A the master
equations to obtain the tensor coefficients up to the hexagon level in the
external momenta convention are presented including the ones needed for small
Gram determinants.Comment: 48 pages,16 figure

Strangeness nuclear physics: a critical review on selected topics
Selected topics in strangeness nuclear physics are critically reviewed. This
includes production, structure and weak decay of --Hypernuclei, the
nuclear interaction and the possible existence of bound
states in nuclei. Perspectives for future studies on these issues are also
outlined.Comment: 63 pages, 51 figures, accepted for publication on European Physical

Benchmark Test Calculation of a Four-Nucleon Bound State
In the past, several efficient methods have been developed to solve the
Schroedinger equation for four-nucleon bound states accurately. These are the
Faddeev-Yakubovsky, the coupled-rearrangement-channel Gaussian-basis
variational, the stochastic variational, the hyperspherical variational, the
Green's function Monte Carlo, the no-core shell model and the effective
interaction hyperspherical harmonic methods. In this article we compare the
energy eigenvalue results and some wave function properties using the realistic
AV8' NN interaction. The results of all schemes agree very well showing the
high accuracy of our present ability to calculate the four-nucleon bound state.Comment: 17 pages, 1 figure
What Does Free Space Lambda-Lambda Interaction Predict for Lambda-Lambda Hypernuclei?
Data on Lambda-Lambda hypernuclei provide a unique method to learn details on
the strangeness S =-2 sector of the baryon-baryon interaction. From the free
space Bonn-Julich potentials, determined from data on baryon-baryon scattering
in the S=0,-1 channels, we construct an interaction in the S =-2 sector to
describe the experimentally known Lambda-Lambda hypernuclei. After including
short--range (Jastrow) and RPA correlations, we find masses for these
Lambda-Lambda hypernuclei in a reasonable agreement with data, taking into
account theoretical and experimental uncertainties. Thus, we provide a natural
extension, at low energies, of the Bonn-Julich OBE potentials to the S =-2
channel.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, revtex4 style. Minor changes in conclusions.

Variational calculations for the hydrogen-antihydrogen system with a mass-scaled Born-Oppenheimer potential
The problem of proton-antiproton motion in the --
system is investigated by means of the variational method. We introduce a
modified nuclear interaction through mass-scaling of the Born-Oppenheimer
potential. This improved treatment of the interaction includes the nondivergent
part of the otherwise divergent adiabatic correction and shows the correct
threshold behavior.
Using this potential we calculate the vibrational energy levels with angular
momentum 0 and 1 and the corresponding nuclear wave functions, as well as the
S-wave scattering length. We obtain a full set of all bound states together
with a large number of discretized continuum states that might be utilized in
variational four-body calculations. The results of our calculations gives an
indication of resonance states in the hydrogen-antihydrogen system
Ingestion of radioactively contaminated diets for two generations in the pale grass blue butterfly
Background: The release of radioactive materials due to the Fukushima nuclear accident has raised concern regarding the biological impacts of ingesting radioactively contaminated diets on organisms. We previously performed an internal exposure experiment in which contaminated leaves collected from polluted areas were fed to larvae of the pale grass blue butterfly, Zizeeria maha, from Okinawa, which is one of the least polluted localities in Japan. Using the same experimental system, in the present study, we further examined the effects of low-level-contaminated diets on this butterfly. Leaves were collected from two localities in Tohoku (Motomiya (161 Bq/kg) and Koriyama (117 Bq/kg)); two in Kanto (Kashiwa (47.6 Bq/kg) and Musashino (6.4 Bq/kg)); one in Tokai (Atami (2.5 Bq/kg)); and from Okinawa (0.2 Bq/kg). In addition to the effects on the first generation, we examined the possible transgenerational effects of the diets on the next generation. Results: In the first generation, the Tohoku groups showed higher rates of mortality and abnormalities and a smaller forewing size than the Okinawa group. The mortality rates were largely dependent on the ingested dose of caesium. The survival rates of the Kanto-Tokai groups were greater than 80%, but the rates in the Tohoku groups were much lower. In the next generation, the survival rates in the Tohoku groups were below 20%, whereas those of the Okinawa groups were above 70%. The survival rates in the second generation were independent of the locality of the leaves ingested by the first generation, indicating that the diet in the second generation was the determinant of their survival. Moreover, a smaller forewing size was observed in the Tohoku groups in the second generation. However, the forewing size was inversely correlated with the cumulative caesium dose ingested throughout the first and second generations, indicating that the diet in the first generation also influenced the forewing size of the second generation. Conclusions: Biological effects are detectable under a low ingested dose of radioactivity from a contaminated diet. The effects are transgenerational but can be overcome by ingesting a non-contaminated diet, suggesting that at least some of the observed effects are attributable to non-genetic physiological changes
Exponential behavior of a quantum system in a macroscopic medium
An exponential behavior at all times is derived for a solvable dynamical
model in the weak-coupling, macroscopic limit. Some implications for the
quantum measurement problem are discussed, in particular in connection with
dissipation.Comment: 8 pages, report BA-TH/94-17
Performance of HPGe Detectors in High Magnetic Fields
A new generation of high-resolution hypernuclear gamma$-spectroscopy
experiments with high-purity germanium detectors (HPGe) are presently designed
at the FINUDA spectrometer at DAPhiNE, the Frascati phi-factory, and at PANDA,
the antiproton proton hadron spectrometer at the future FAIR facility. Both,
the FINUDA and PANDA spectrometers are built around the target region covering
a large solid angle. To maximise the detection efficiency the HPGe detectors
have to be located near the target, and therefore they have to be operated in
strong magnetic fields B ~ 1 T. The performance of HPGe detectors in such an
environment has not been well investigated so far. In the present work VEGA and
EUROBALL Cluster HPGe detectors were tested in the field provided by the ALADiN
magnet at GSI. No significant degradation of the energy resolution was found,
and a change in the rise time distribution of the pulses from preamplifiers was
observed. A correlation between rise time and pulse height was observed and is
used to correct the measured energy, recovering the energy resolution almost
completely. Moreover, no problems in the electronics due to the magnetic field
were observed.Comment: submitted to Nucl. Instrum. Meth. Phys. Res. A, LaTeX, 19 pages, 9

Determination of Matter Surface Distribution of Neutron-rich Nuclei
We demonstrate that the matter density distribution in the surface region is
determined well by the use of the relatively low-intensity beams that become
available at the upcoming radioactive beam facilities. Following the method
used in the analyses of electron scattering, we examine how well the density
distribution is determined in a model-independent way by generating pseudo data
and by carefully applying statistical and systematic error analyses. We also
study how the determination becomes deteriorated in the central region of the
density, as the quality of data decreases. Determination of the density
distributions of neutron-rich nuclei is performed by fixing parameters in the
basis functions to the neighboring stable nuclei. The procedure allows that the
knowledge of the density distributions of stable nuclei assists to strengthen
the determination of their unstable isotopes.Comment: 41 pages, latex, 27 figure
