    Polarimetric optical-fibre sensor for biochemical measurements

    The use of an optical-fibre polarimeter as a chemical sensor is demonstrated. The compound to be detected is allowed to adsorb onto a decladded 5 cm length of the fibre. The fibre is polarization maintaining with an elliptical fibre core and a D-shaped geometry. The overall retardation stability of this fibre polarimeter is ≈ 0.5 × 2π rad m−1 K−1. With this sensor adsorption processes of proteins can be followed on-line. The resulting relative phase retardations caused by the growth of a monolayer of antibodies (αhCG, αhSA) are 0.25 × 2π. For the much smaller protein hSA, this value is 0.1 × 2

    Realization and Characterization of a Four-Channel Integrated Optical Young Interferometer

    In this paper, we report the realization and characterization of a four-channel integrated optical Young interferometer (YI), which enables simultaneous and independent monitoring of three binding processes. The simultaneous and independent measurement of three different glucose concentrations shows the multi-purpose feature of such device. The phase resolution for different pairs of channels was /spl sim/1/spl times/10/sup -4/ fringes, which corresponds to a refractive index resolution of /spl sim/8.5/spl times/10/sup -8/ . The observed errors, which are caused due to mismatching of spatial frequencies of individual interference patterns with those determined from the CCD camera, have been reduced by using different reduction schemes. In addition, we have investigated a novel method for discrimination of the refractive index change from the thickness of a bound layer during an immunoreaction, as well as measuring the temperature change the takes place during such a process

    Stepwise Adsorption of Alkoxy-Pyrene Derivatives onto a Lamellar, Non-Porous Naphthalenediimide-Template on HOPG

    The development of new strategies for the preparation of multicomponent supramolecular assemblies is a major challenge on the road to complex functional molecular systems. Here we present the use of a non-porous self-assembled monolayer from uC33-NDI-uC33, a naphthalenediimide symmetrically functionalized with unsaturated 33 carbon-atom-chains, to prepare bicomponent supramolecular surface systems with a series of alkoxy-pyrene (PyrOR) derivatives at the liquid/HOPG interface. While previous attempts at directly depositing many of these PyrOR units at the liquid/HOPG interface failed, the multicomponent approach through the uC33-NDI-uC33 template enabled control over molecular interactions and facilitated adsorption. The PyrOR deposition restructured the initial uC33-NDI-uC33 monolayer, causing an expansion in two dimensions to accommodate the guests. As far as we know, this represents the first example of a non-porous or non-metal complex-bearing monolayer that allows the stepwise formation of multicomponent supramolecular architectures on surfaces

    Box-Shaped Dielectric Waveguides: A New Concept in Integrated Optics?

    A novel class of optical waveguides with a box-shaped cross section consisting of a low-index inner material surrounded by a thin high-index coating layer is presented. This original multilayered structure widens the traditional concept of index contrast for dielectric waveguides toward a more general concept of effective index contrast, which can be artificially tailored over a continuous range by properly choosing the thickness of the outer high-index layers. An electromagnetic analysis is reported, which shows that the transverse electric and transverse magnetic modes are spatially confined in different regions of the cross section and exhibit an almost 90degC rotational symmetry. Such unusual field distribution is demonstrated to open the way to new intriguing properties with respect to conventional waveguides. Design criteria are provided into details, which mainly focus on the polarization dependence of the waveguide on geometrical parameters. The possibility of achieving single-mode waveguides with either zero or high birefringence is discussed, and the bending capabilities are compared to conventional waveguides. The feasibility of the proposed waveguide is demonstrated by the realization of prototypal samples that are fabricated by using the emerging CMOS- compatible Si3N4-SiO2 TriPleX technology. An exhaustive experimental characterization is reported, which shows propagation loss as low as state-of-the-art low-index-contrast waveguides (< 0.1 dB/cm) together with enhanced flexibility in the optimization of polarization sensitivity and confirms the high potentialities of the proposed waveguides for large-scale integrated optics

    On-chip Mach-Zehnder interferometer for OCT systems

    By using integrated optics, it is possible to reduce the size and cost of a bulky optical coherence tomography (OCT) system. One of the OCT components that can be implemented on-chip is the interferometer. In this work, we present the design and characterization of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer consisting of the wavelength-independent splitters and an on-chip reference arm. The Si3N4 was chosen as the material platform as it can provide low losses while keeping the device size small. The device was characterized by using a home-built swept source OCT system. A sensitivity value of 83 dB, an axial resolution of 15.2 ÎŒm (in air) and a depth range of 2.5 mm (in air) were all obtained

    A compact and reconfigurable silicon nitride time-bin entanglement circuit

    Photonic chip based time-bin entanglement has attracted significant attention because of its potential for quantum communication and computation. Useful time-bin entanglement systems must be able to generate, manipulate and analyze entangled photons on a photonic chip for stable, scalable and reconfigurable operation. Here we report the first time-bin entanglement photonic chip that integrates time-bin generation, wavelength demultiplexing and entanglement analysis. A two-photon interference fringe with an 88.4% visibility is measured (without subtracting any noise), indicating the high performance of the chip. Our approach, based on a silicon nitride photonic circuit, which combines the low-loss characteristic of silica and tight integration features of silicon, paves the way for scalable real-world quantum information processors.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure

    Age-Related Decline in Reproductive Sensitivity to Inhibition by Short Photoperiod in Peromyscus Leucopus

    Seasonal environments favor the timing, of reproduction to match seasons when Successful reproduction is most likely. Most species of temperate zone mammals suppress reproduction in winter using changes in day length as a cue. In many species, individuals vary genetically in how strongly they respond to these seasonal cues. Individuals also may modify their response to day length depending upon other factors, including their age. Age-specific changes might occur because young, peripubertal rodents are more strongly affected by harsh conditions than adults, and therefore might be more sensitive to inhibitory photoperiods. We tested the hypothesis that genetic variation in responses to photoperiod persists as individuals age. Young males from a captive population of white-footed mice (Peromyscus leucopus) that is genetically variable for reproductive inhibition by short day length (SD) were tested for photoperiod responses. Mice were placed in SD within 3 days after birth, tested at age 70 days, allowed to mature for at least 18 weeks at long day length, and then tested again as adults aged \u3e= 34 weeks. Young males were more likely to be strongly reproductively Suppressed by SD than adults, indicating that age-specific changes in reproductive strategy occur in this Population. However, males that were reproductively photoresponsive when young also were more likely to be reproductively photoresponsive as adults. Thus, genetic tendency for reproductive sensitivity to photoperiod is a trait retained from puberty to adulthood, but attenuates with age
