Twisted equivariant K-theory, groupoids and proper actions
In this paper we define twisted equivariant K-theory for actions of Lie
groupoids. For a Bredon-compatible Lie groupoid, this defines a periodic
cohomology theory on the category of finite CW-complexes with equivariant
stable projective bundles. A classification of these bundles is shown. We also
obtain a completion theorem and apply these results to proper actions of

Geometric K-Homology of Flat D-Branes
We use the Baum-Douglas construction of K-homology to explicitly describe
various aspects of D-branes in Type II superstring theory in the absence of
background supergravity form fields. We rigorously derive various stability
criteria for states of D-branes and show how standard bound state constructions
are naturally realized directly in terms of topological K-cycles. We formulate
the mechanism of flux stabilization in terms of the K-homology of non-trivial
fibre bundles. Along the way we derive a number of new mathematical results in

Diblock copolymers at a homopolymer-homopolymer-interface: a Monte Carlo simulation
The properties of diluted symmetric A-B diblock copolymers at the interface
between A and B homopolymer phases are studied by means of Monte Carlo (MC)
simulations of the bond fluctuation model. We calculate segment density
profiles as well as orientational properties of segments, of A and B blocks,
and of the whole chain. Our data support the picture of oriented ``dumbbells'',
which consist of mildly perturbed A and B Gaussian coils. The results are
compared to a self consistent field theory (SCFT) for single copolymer chains
at a homopolymer interface. We also discuss the number of interaction contacts
between monomers, which provide a measure for the ``active surface'' of
copolymers or homopolymers close to the interface

Is fluency being ‘neglected’ in the classroom? Teacher understanding of fluency and related classroom practices
This paper reports on a study examining second language (L2) teachers’ understanding of speech fluency and their self-reported classroom practices for promoting it. Qualitative and quantitative data collected from 84 L2 teachers in England were analysed to answer the research questions. In addition to the descriptive statistics and lexical frequency analysis used to explore teacher understanding of fluency, Rossiter, Derwing, Manimtim and Thomson’s (2010) framework was employed to analyse the teachers’ reported classroom practices. The results suggest that teachers often define fluency in a broad sense, with many using fluency and speaking ability interchangeably. Similarly, a large majority of the activities reported by the teachers were useful for enhancing speaking practice rather than focussing on fluency specifically. The findings underline the interaction between teacher understanding of fluency and their classroom practice (Borg, 2003), and highlight a mismatch between what fluency research recommends and what teachers do in class. Though the study highlights the complex and multifaceted nature of L2 oral fluency, we argue that adopting a narrower and more focused definition of fluency could help teachers take a more active and practical approach to promoting it in the classroom
The Maternal Personhood of Cattle and Plants at a Hindu Center in the United States
Religious experiences with sacred nonhuman natural beings considered to be “persons” remain only vaguely understood. This essay provides a measure of clarification by engendering a dialogue between psychoanalytic self psychology on one side and, on the other, religious experiences of cattle and Tulsi plants as holy mothers at a Hindu cattle sanctuary in the United States. Ethnographic data from the Hindu center uncover experiences of sacred maternal natural beings that are tensive, liminal, and colored with affective themes of nurturance, respect, and intimacy, much like psychoanalytic maternal selfobjects. Devotees protect cattle and ritually venerate plants because these actions facilitate a limited experiential grounding of religiosity on what is perhaps the most fundamental of all relationships, the relationship with the mother, within a theological worldview that somewhat embraces nonhuman natural beings in both doctrine and practice
Constraints on the χ_(c1) versus χ_(c2) polarizations in proton-proton collisions at √s = 8 TeV
The polarizations of promptly produced χ_(c1) and χ_(c2) mesons are studied using data collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC, in proton-proton collisions at √s=8 TeV. The χ_c states are reconstructed via their radiative decays χ_c → J/ψγ, with the photons being measured through conversions to e⁺e⁻, which allows the two states to be well resolved. The polarizations are measured in the helicity frame, through the analysis of the χ_(c2) to χ_(c1) yield ratio as a function of the polar or azimuthal angle of the positive muon emitted in the J/ψ → μ⁺μ⁻ decay, in three bins of J/ψ transverse momentum. While no differences are seen between the two states in terms of azimuthal decay angle distributions, they are observed to have significantly different polar anisotropies. The measurement favors a scenario where at least one of the two states is strongly polarized along the helicity quantization axis, in agreement with nonrelativistic quantum chromodynamics predictions. This is the first measurement of significantly polarized quarkonia produced at high transverse momentum
