Casimir force calculations near the insulator-conductor transition in gold thin films
We present theoretical calculations of the Casimir force for Au thin films
near the insulator-conductor transition that has been observed experimentally.
The dielectric function of the Au thin films is described by the Drude-Smith
model. The parameters needed to model the dielectric function such as the
relaxation time, plasma frequency and the backscattering constant depend on the
thickness of the film. The Casimir force decreases as the film thickness
decreases until it reaches a minimum after which the force increases again. The
minimum of the force coincides with the critical film thickness where a
percolation conductor-insulator occurs.Comment: 5 figures, 1 tabl
Van der Waals torque induced by external magnetic fields
We present a method for inducing and controlling van der Waals torques
between two parallel slabs using a constant magnetic field. The torque is
calculated using the Barash theory of dispersive torques. In III-IV
semiconductors such as , the effect of an external magnetic field is to
induce an optical anisotropy, in an otherwise isotropic material, that will in
turn induce a torque.
The calculations of the torque are done in the Voigt configuration, with the
magnetic field parallel to the surface of the slabs. As a case study we
consider a slab made of calcite and a second slab made of . In the
absence of magnetic field there is no torque. As the magnetic field increases,
the optical anisotropy of increases and the torque becomes different
from zero, increasing with the magnetic field. The resulting torque is of the
same order of magnitude as that calculated using permanent anisotropic
materials when the magnetic fields is close to 1 T.Comment: to appear in Journal of Applied Physic
Reduction of the Casimir force using aerogels
By using silicon oxide based aerogels we show numerically that the Casimir
force can be reduced several orders of magnitude, making its effect negligible
in nanodevices. This decrease in the Casimir force is also present even when
the aerogels are deposited on metallic substrates. To calculate the Casimir
force we model the dielectric function of silicon oxide aerogels using an
effective medium dielectric function such as the Clausius-Mossotti
approximation. The results show that both the porosity of the aerogel and its
thickness can be use as control parameters to reduce the magnitude of the

The role of magnetoplasmons in Casimir force calculations
In this paper we review the role of magneto plasmon polaritons in the Casimir
force calculations. By applying an external constant magnetic field a strong
optical anisotropy is induced on two parallel slabs reducing the reflectivity
and thus the Casimir force. As the external magnetic field increases, the
Casimir force decreases. Thus, with an an external magnetic field the Casimir
force can be controlled.The calculations are done in the Voigt configuration
where the magnetic field is parallel to the slabs. In this configuration the

Liver transplantation in patients with patent splenorenal shunts
Patent distal splenorenal shunts (Warren shunt) have been reported to cause decreases in the portal perfusion pressure and the total hepatic blood flow. Such hemodynamic alterations could have adverse effects on the transplanted liver. The experience with hepatic replacement in four patients with patent Warren shunts is reported. Operative findings were phlebosclerotic portal veins of small size and diminished portal blood flows. Hepatofugal collateral channels created by the construction of the Warren shunt should not be a contraindication for hepatic transplantation
Indications for pediatric liver transplantation
Two hundred fifty pediatric (<18 years of age) patients underwent orthotopic liver transplantation because of end-stage liver disease and were given combination therapy with cyclosporine and prednisone. The most common indications for transplantation in decreasing order of frequency were biliary atresia, inborn errors of metabolism, and postnecrotic cirrhosis. The 5-year actuarial survival for the entire group was 69.2%. Age and diagnosis did not influence survival. Infections were the most common cause of death, followed by liver failure and cerebrovascular accident. The impact of retransplantation on survival depends on the indication. The survival is better when retransplantation is carried out after rejection than because of technical complications, and the latter has a better survival than does primary graft nonfunction. The difference in survival among these groups is statistically significant. The quality of life for 164 of 173 survivors is good to excellent; only nine children are currently experiencing medical problems. A persistent problem in pediatric transplantation is the scarcity of small donors. © 1987 The C. V. Mosby Company
Pull-in control due to Casimir forces using external magnetic fields
We present a theoretical calculation of the pull-in control in capacitive
micro switches actuated by Casimir forces, using external magnetic fields. The
external magnetic fields induces an optical anisotropy due to the excitation of
magneto plasmons, that reduces the Casimir force. The calculations are
performed in the Voigt configuration, and the results show that as the magnetic
field increases the system becomes more stable. The detachment length for a
cantilever is also calculated for a cantilever, showing that it increases with
increasing magnetic field. At the pull-in separation, the stiffness of the

Treatment of hepatic epithelioid hemangioendothelioma with liver transplantation
Ten patients received liver transplants for unresectable epithelioid hemangioendothelioma (EHE). At the time of transplantation, four patients had microscopic metastases to the hilar lymph nodes, and one of the four also had metastases to a rib. The fifth patient had metastases to the lung, pleura, and diaphragm. The remaining five patients were believed to be free of metastatic disease. Two of these five patients died of metastatic disease at 3 and 16 months, respectively, after transplantation. Interestingly, all five patients with metastatic involvement are currently alive 40.6 ± 22 months (mean ± standard error of mean [SEM]) after transplantation, although one of these patients currently has metastatic disease to the lungs and mediastinum. Thus, the projected 5‐year actuarial survival rate is 76%, with two patients at risk after the third year. In conclusion, liver transplantation is a reasonable procedure for bulky, otherwise unresectable, EHE even in the presence of metastatic disease. Copyright © 1988 American Cancer Societ
Statistics of Velocity from Spectral Data: Modified Velocity Centroids
We address the problem of studying interstellar turbulence using spectral
line data. We find a criterion when the velocity centroids may provide
trustworthy velocity statistics. To enhance the scope of centroids
applications, we construct a measure that we term ``modified velocity
centroids'' (MVCs) and derive an analytical solution that relates the 2D
spectra of the modified centroids with the underlying 3D velocity spectrum. We
test our results using synthetic maps constructed with data obtained through
simulations of compressible magnetohydrodynamical (MHD) turbulence. We show
that the modified velocity centroids (MVCs) are complementary to the the
Velocity Channel Analysis (VCA) technique. Employed together, they make
determining of the velocity spectral index more reliable and for wider variety
