A continuity argument for a semilinear Skyrme model
We investigate a semilinear modification for the wave map problem proposed by
Adkins and Nappi, and prove that in the equivariant case the solution remain
continuous at the first possible singularity
Gradual Program Analysis
Dataflow analysis and gradual typing are both well-studied methods to gain information about computer programs in a finite amount of time. The gradual program analysis project seeks to combine those two techniques in order to gain the benefits of both. This thesis explores the background information necessary to understand gradual program analysis, and then briefly discusses the research itself, with reference to publication of work done so far. The background topics include essential aspects of programming language theory, such as syntax, semantics, and static typing; dataflow analysis concepts, such as abstract interpretation, semilattices, and fixpoint computations; and gradual typing theory, such as the concept of an unknown type, liftings of predicates, and liftings of functions
Velocity dominated singularities in the cheese slice universe
We investigate the properties of spacetimes resulting from matching together
exact solutions using the Darmois matching conditions. In particular we focus
on the asymptotically velocity term dominated property (AVTD). We propose a
criterion that can be used to test if a spacetime constructed from a matching
can be considered AVTD. Using the Cheese Slice universe as an example, we show
that a spacetime constructed from a such a matching can inherit the AVTD
property from the original spacetimes. Furthermore the singularity resulting

The Dynamics of Metropolitan Housing Prices
This article is the winner of the Innovative Thinking ‘‘Thinking Out of the Box’’ manuscript prize (sponsored by the Homer Hoyt Advanced Studies Institute) presented at the 2001 American Real Estate Society Annual Meeting. This study examines the dynamics of real housing price appreciation in 130 metropolitan areas across the United States. The study finds that real housing price appreciation is strongly influenced by the growth of population and real changes in income, construction costs and interest rates. The study also finds that stock market appreciation imparts a strong current and lagged wealth effect on housing prices. Housing appreciation rates also are found to vary across areas because of location-specific fixed-effects; these fixed effects represent the residuals of housing price appreciation attributable to location. The magnitudes of the fixed-effects in particular cities are positively correlated with restrictive growth management policies and limitations on land availability.
Detectability of High Redshift Ellipticals in the Hubble Deep Field
Relatively few intensively star-forming galaxies at redshifts z>2.5 have been
found in the Hubble Deep Field (HDF). This has been interpreted to imply a low
space density of elliptical galaxies at high z, possibly due to a late (z<2.5)
epoch of formation, or to dust obscuration of the ellipticals that are forming
at z~3. I use HST UV (2300 Ang) images of 25 local early-type galaxies to
investigate a third option, that ellipticals formed at z>4.5, and were fading
passively by 2<z<4.5. Present-day early-types are faint and centrally
concentrated in the UV. If ellipticals formed their stars in a short burst at
z>4.5, and have faded passively to their present brightnesses at UV
wavelengths, they would generally be below the HDF detection limits in any of
its bands at z>2.5. Quiescent z ~ 3 ellipticals, if they exist, should turn up
