    Postgraduate nursesā€™ insights into the nursing leadership role. Do they intuitively link the role to patient safety?

    Nursing leaders are compelled to ensure a safety and quality agenda in the acute care environment as patient outcomes are linked to nursing care. Good nursing leadership where focus is directed to accountability and responsibility for clinical outcomes and patient safety, results in reduced adverse events and patient mortality. Integral to the future of high-quality effective clinical care with an absence of errors is the training of the next generation of nursing leaders. In this discussion paper, the extent to which future nurse leaders intuitively acknowledge patient safety as part of their leadership role was examined amongst a cohort of postgraduate nursing students. A content analysis to search for quality and safety terminology was conducted on 146 essay responses to a question about the nurse leader role in todayā€™s healthcare environment. The results indicated minimal acknowledgement of patient safety as an intuitive consideration in the nursing leadership role. Recommendations are discussed for developing postgraduate nursing educational curricula with patient safety strategies as a central component to the practice of leadership

    Conodonts in the Nature Park: Exploring Our History

    Are conodonts present in the Nature Park? Can we identify them and use them to determine the age of the rocks in the Nature Park? Do the specimens we find in the Nature Park match the species found in previous studies of the Ste. Genevieve Limestone? To answer these questions, we processed limestone samples by manually extracting them and crushing those samples. We then dry sieved samples using 18-20 micron pans, and then combined sorted grains with 10% acetic acid. Those contents were wet sieved with 60 and 120 microns pans. This method allowed us to extract approximately 30 specimens to be examined under a scope for the identification process. Using the multi element approach, we were able to identify P, S, and M series elements. Ozarkodina, Spathognathodus, and Neoprioniodus were most commonly identified and found in both the upper and lower layers of the quarry wall. Some specimens that were only expected to be found in St. Louis Limestone were found in our outcrop, which we initially hypothesized to be the Ste. Genevieve Limestone. Explanations for these results could be that the quarry falls partially in the Ste. Genevieve and the St. Louis Limestone or there were potential errors made in the identification process, resulting in incorrect placement of the boundary. Our data was inconclusive and would require further research to bring more conclusive results

    Signs as deterrents of illegal parking in spaces designated for individuals with physical disabilities.

    The percentage of illegal parking in spaces reserved for the physically disabled was monitored under three sign conditions: ground markings, ground markings plus vertical signs, and vertical signs containing a message that concerned citizens were watching the spaces. Illegal parking dropped from 69.3% of 102 vehides during the initial ground-sign condition to 57.3% of 36 vehides in the first vertical-sign condition. Following removal of the vertical signs, illegal parking increased to 68.7% of 43 vehides. During the second vertical-sign condition, illegal parking dropped to 53.7% of 32 vehides, followed by an increase to 69.5% of 68 vehides after the vertical signs were removed. The lowest rate of illegal parking (27.1% of 78 vehides) occurred in the vertical-sign-plus-message condition. Illegal parking subsequently increased to 34.6% (of 94 vehides) when the message sign was removed, followed by an increase to 65.2% (of 105 vehides) when the vertical signs were removed.     Generation of folk song melodies using Bayes transforms

    The paper introduces the `Bayes transform', a mathematical procedure for putting data into a hierarchical representation. Applicable to any type of data, the procedure yields interesting results when applied to sequences. In this case, the representation obtained implicitly models the repetition hierarchy of the source. There are then natural applications to music. Derivation of Bayes transforms can be the means of determining the repetition hierarchy of note sequences (melodies) in an empirical and domain-general way. The paper investigates application of this approach to Folk Song, examining the results that can be obtained by treating such transforms as generative models

    Comparison of Plankton Catch by Three Light-Trap Designs in the Northern Gulf of Mexico

    The ichthyoplankton catch and zooplankton biomass estimates of three light-trap designs-cylindrical, quatrefoil, and rectangular-were compared over three consecutive nights at an offshore petroleum platform in the northern Gulf of Mexico. The quatrefoil light trap had higher fish and zooplankton abundance estimates than the other two designs. Categorical analysis of the two abundant fish taxa, Opisthonema oglinum and Anchoa spp., indicated that catch by the quatrefoil and rectangular traps was similar, capturing more larvae than juveniles and more O. oglinum than Anchoa spp. relative to cylindrical trap catch. Across all fish species, the quatrefoil captured a greater percentage of larvae. Other ontogenetic and species-specific differences were noted among the light-trap designs. Samples from vertical plankton tows underestimated larger size classes compared to light-trap catch. Light-trap catch per unit effort (CPUE) declined through the night, especially for the quatrefoil, and increased with depth. In contrast, the percentage of larvae captured across all traps increased through the night and decreased with depth, indicating that CPUE was related mostly to juvenile catch.
