    Polyamine metabolism in compensatory renal growth

    Compensatory renal growth, following renal mass extirpation, is accompanied by multiple biochemical alterations including increased nucleic acid, protein, and polyamine synthesis. The aliphatic polyamines-putrescine, spermidine, and spermine are found in most living organisms and appear to participate in many forms of augmented growth including embryonic, regenerative, hormone-induced, and neoplastic [1–3]. While the precise biochemical function of these compounds has not been defined, increased levels of polyamines and their biosynthetic enzymes occur in association with enhanced nucleic acid and protein synthesis in rapidly growing tissues [3–6]. Polyamines apparently contribute to nucleic acid accumulation by promoting biosynthesis and retarding degradation [6–8]. The decarboxylation of ornithine to putrescine is the rate-limiting step in polyamine synthesis. The catalyst, ornithine decarboxylase, is very inducible and has a short half-life in both normal and regenerating liver (10 to 11 min) [5]. Changes in enzyme activity precede or occur simultaneously with increases in RNA, DNA, and protein concentrations [3].In this study, alterations in renal polyamine synthesis were investigated in conjunction with other evidences of stimulated kidney growth following unilateral nephrectomy. These data are discussed in the context of previous observations regarding polyamine biosynthesis during enhanced renal growth

    Impact of lactoferrin on bone regenerative processes and its possible implementation in oral surgery - a systematic review of novel studies with metanalysis and metaregression

    Background: Lactoferrin is an iron - binding glycoprotein with anti-inflammatory and anabolic properties found in many internal fluids. It is worth looking at novel studies, because of their methodology and observations that may once be applicable in modern implantology. The aim of the study is to answer the question if lactoferrin is a promising factor for bone regenerative process in oral surgery. Method: An electronic search was conducted on 14th October 2019 on the PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science databases. The keywords used in the search strategy were: lactoferrin AND bone regeneration AND oral surgery. The qualitative evaluation was conducted using the Jadad and Newcastle-Ottawa Quality Assessment Form. Then a metanalysis of a new bone growth and percentage of the resorbed graft were performed with the metaregression of lactoferrin dose to its outcome effects on bone regeneration. Results: The search strategy identified potential articles: 133 from PubMed, 2 from Scopus, 4 from Web of science. After removal of duplicates, 136 articles were analyzed. Subsequently, 131 papers were excluded because they did not meet the inclusion criteria. The remaining 5 papers were included in the qualitative synthesis. The use of lactoferrin clearly increases the growth of a newly formed bone (2.58, CI:[0.79, 4.37]), as well as shortens the time of the graft resorption (- 1.70, Cl:[3.43, 0.03]) and replaces it with a species-specific bone. Heterogeneity is significant at p < 0.001 level. Metaregression indicates that one unit increase in the log (Treatment dose), i.e. a 2.78 times increase of the Treatment dose, results in an increase of the Effect size by 0.682. Conclusions: The use of lactoferrin both systemically and locally promotes anabolic processes (new bone formation). There is a relationship between the increase in administered dose of lactoferrin and the intensity of new bone formation. However, it is not only necessary to continue experimental research, but also to extend it to the clinical studies on patients, due to the limitations of different animal model research and different methodology, to introduce lactoferrin as a standard procedure for the treatment of bone defects, because it is a promising product

    Shadow band in the one-dimensional large UU Hubbard model

    We show that the factorized wave-function of Ogata and Shiba can be used to calculate the kk dependent spectral functions of the one-dimensional, infinite UU Hubbard model, and of some extensions to finite UU. The resulting spectral function is remarkably rich: In addition to low energy features typical of Luttinger liquids, there is a well defined band, which we identify as the shadow band resulting from 2kF2k_F spin fluctuations.     Quantum lattice dynamical effects on the single-particle excitations in 1D Mott and Peierls insulators

    As a generic model describing quasi-one-dimensional Mott and Peierls insulators, we investigate the Holstein-Hubbard model for half-filled bands using numerical techniques. Combining Lanczos diagonalization with Chebyshev moment expansion we calculate exactly the photoemission and inverse photoemission spectra and use these to establish the phase diagram of the model. While polaronic features emerge only at strong electron-phonon couplings, pronounced phonon signatures, such as multi-quanta band states, can be found in the Mott insulating regime as well. In order to corroborate the Mott to Peierls transition scenario, we determine the spin and charge excitation gaps by a finite-size scaling analysis based on density-matrix renormalization group calculations.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure

    Kink Structure in the Quasiparticle Band of Doped Hubbard Systems

    By making use of the self-consistent projection operator method with high-momentum and high-energy resolutions, we find a kink structure in the quasiparticle excitation spectrum of the two-dimensional Hubbard model in the underdoped regime. The kink is caused by a mixing between the quasiparticle state and excitations with short-range antiferromagnetic order. We suggest that this might be the origin of the strong concentration dependence of the 'kink' found in La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4} (x=0.03-0.07).Comment: 3 pages, 4 figures. to be published in J. Phys.     Corporate reporting on corruption: an international comparison

    Building on an institutionalist framework of the various organizational field-level pressures on firms to engage with the challenge of corruption, we analyse anti-corruption disclosures across a sample of 933 sustainability reports. Such reporting complements anti-corruption initiatives, as it allows the company to demonstrate its commitment. Our results show clear country- and sector-level differences in the extent to which companies communicate their anti-corruption engagement. However, the more a company is exposed to corruption, the less likely it appears to openly communicate its anti-corruption engagement. Hence, our results cast doubt on the effectiveness of anti-corruption disclosures as part of wider sustainability reporting
