    Simulation-Based Solution of Stochastic Mathematical Programs with Complementarity Constraints: Sample-Path Analysis

    We consider a class of stochastic mathematical programs with complementarity constraints, in which both the objective and the constraints involve limit functions or expectations that need to be estimated or approximated.Such programs can be used for modeling average or steady-state behavior of complex stochastic systems.Recently, simulation-based methods have been successfully used for solving challenging stochastic optimization problems and equilibrium models.Here we broaden the applicability of so-called the sample-path method to include the solution of certain stochastic mathematical programs with equilibrium constraints.The convergence analysis of sample-path methods rely heavily on stability conditions.We first review necessary sensitivity results, then describe the method, and provide sufficient conditions for its almost-sure convergence.Alongside we provide a complementary sensitivity result for the corresponding deterministic problems.In addition, we also provide a unifying discussion on alternative set of sufficient conditions, derive a complementary result regarding the analysis of stochastic variational inequalities, and prove the equivalence of two different regularity conditions.stochastic processes;mathematics;stability;simulation;regulations;general equilibrium

    Emotions in parliamentary diplomacy: debating the Armenian genocide in the European Parliament

    Why do international institutions promote emotional norms? In order to answer this question, the article, first, maps the legitimizing arguments put forward by the Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) in promoting an emotionally loaded norm vis-à-vis Turkey, i.e., the recognition of the Armenian genocide. Second, the paper explores the reasons behind the promotion of this emotional norm by the European Parliament (EP) as justified by the MEPs. The article theoretically draws on the IR literature on emotions, and empirically, it relies on the data generated from the interventions by the MEPs at the plenary on the centenary of the Armenian genocide on 15 April 2015. Through claims analysis, it is demonstrated that the condemnation of genocide is a shared norm within the EP, which transcends national and ideological differences. Consequently, the MEPs aspire to render it an essential constitutive element of the emotional community at the EU level.Security and Global Affair

Furthermore, there are transient events leading to excessive demand surges where it is needed to deploy additional network capacity on-demand. In such cases, rapid network deployments become vital to establish communications and enable networked services. Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) networks are good candidates for this kind of operation. Software-defined networking and content-centric operation are promising technologies to enable agile control, network visibility and efficient content delivery via centralized optimization in these challenged systems. In this work, we consider an edge network which is composed of UAVs and serves in a content-centric mode with in-network caching and device-to-device (D2D) transmissions. We develop a cache placement and selection scheme for energy efficient operation. We also investigate how such a system performs under different operating conditions

    The presence of organophosphorus compounds (OPs) in the environmental counterparts has become an important problem because of their toxicity. In this study, the photocatalytic degradation reactions of the three OPs with hydroxyl radical were investigated by both experimental and quantum chemical methods. Photocatalytic degradation kinetics of the examined organophosphorus compounds were investigated under UV-A irradiation using TiO2 as the photocatalyst. The effects of the initial concentrations on the degradation rate have been examined. There was an observable loss of OPs in the presence of TiO2 photocatalyst under UV-A at 0.2 g TiO2 per 100 mL. The quantum chemical calculations have been carried out by the density functional theory (DFT) at B3LYP/6-31g(d) level. The reaction pathways were modelled to find the most probable mechanism for OPs with the OH radical and to determine the primary intermediates. The rate constants of the eight reaction paths were calculated by the transition state theory. Conductor-like polarizable continuum model (CPCM) was used as the solvation model with the intention of understanding the water effect.
