    Computational Performance Evaluation of Two Integer Linear Programming Models for the Minimum Common String Partition Problem

    In the minimum common string partition (MCSP) problem two related input strings are given. "Related" refers to the property that both strings consist of the same set of letters appearing the same number of times in each of the two strings. The MCSP seeks a minimum cardinality partitioning of one string into non-overlapping substrings that is also a valid partitioning for the second string. This problem has applications in bioinformatics e.g. in analyzing related DNA or protein sequences. For strings with lengths less than about 1000 letters, a previously published integer linear programming (ILP) formulation yields, when solved with a state-of-the-art solver such as CPLEX, satisfactory results. In this work, we propose a new, alternative ILP model that is compared to the former one. While a polyhedral study shows the linear programming relaxations of the two models to be equally strong, a comprehensive experimental comparison using real-world as well as artificially created benchmark instances indicates substantial computational advantages of the new formulation.Comment: arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1405.5646 This paper version replaces the one submitted on January 10, 2015, due to detected error in the calculation of the variables involved in the ILP model

    What and how long does it take to get tenure? The Case of Economics and Business Administration in Austria, Germany and Switzerland?

    This paper investigates the determinants of tenure decisions in Germany, Austria and the German-speaking part of Switzerland for professorships in economics, business administration and related fields. Our data set comprises candidates who were awarded tenure as well as those who were eligible but were not tenured. We show that business candidates have a higher probability of being tenured than economists. Youth, marital status, and publications matter; gender and children do not. The market for first appointments in economics relies much more on publication performance than the market for business administration.Habilitation, tenure, academic labor market

    Islamic Values in the World Today – Indonesia and the Islamic World

    The present paper is dedicated to answer the question on how Islamic values contribute to today’s multicultural societies. In this context, Indonesia is a good example with its basic tenets of Indonesian state ideology. I argue that this state ideology is coined by Islamic values, but the Indonesian state does not fully live up to these values, because there is no proper input of Islam. Learning from the Indonesian model, I am sure that Islam is not only fully compatible with democracy and a multicultural society, it is also the religion which, if applied in its true sense, can best deal with multicultural and multi religious societies as was stated in the Bhineka Tunggal Ika (Unity in Diversity) principle

    Cooperative Relaying in Wireless Networks under Spatially and Temporally Correlated Interference

    We analyze the performance of an interference-limited, decode-and-forward, cooperative relaying system that comprises a source, a destination, and NN relays, placed arbitrarily on the plane and suffering from interference by a set of interferers placed according to a spatial Poisson process. In each transmission attempt, first the transmitter sends a packet; subsequently, a single one of the relays that received the packet correctly, if such a relay exists, retransmits it. We consider both selection combining and maximal ratio combining at the destination, Rayleigh fading, and interferer mobility. We derive expressions for the probability that a single transmission attempt is successful, as well as for the distribution of the transmission attempts until a packet is transmitted successfully. Results provide design guidelines applicable to a wide range of systems. Overall, the temporal and spatial characteristics of the interference play a significant role in shaping the system performance. Maximal ratio combining is only helpful when relays are close to the destination; in harsh environments, having many relays is especially helpful, and relay placement is critical; the performance improves when interferer mobility increases; and a tradeoff exists between energy efficiency and throughput

    Packet Travel Times in Wireless Relay Chains under Spatially and Temporally Dependent Interference

    We investigate the statistics of the number of time slots TT that it takes a packet to travel through a chain of wireless relays. Derivations are performed assuming an interference model for which interference possesses spatiotemporal dependency properties. When using this model, results are harder to arrive at analytically, but they are more realistic than the ones obtained in many related works that are based on independent interference models. First, we present a method for calculating the distribution of TT. As the required computations are extensive, we also obtain simple expressions for the expected value E[T]\mathrm{E} [T] and variance var[T]\mathrm{var} [T]. Finally, we calculate the asymptotic limit of the average speed of the packet. Our numerical results show that spatiotemporal dependence has a significant impact on the statistics of the travel time TT. In particular, we show that, with respect to the independent interference case, E[T]\mathrm{E} [T] and var[T]\mathrm{var} [T] increase, whereas the packet speed decreases
