    Preliminary results from characterization of the Iberian Peninsula sturgeon based on analysis of the mtDNA cytochrome b

    Historically, the Atlantic sturgeon Acipenser sturio L., 1758 was considered the only sturgeon species that inhabited rivers of the Iberian Peninsula. Nevertheless, in a recent paper, Garrido- Ramos et al. (1997) identified specimen EBD 8174 (museum collection of the Doñana Biological Station, Spain), from the Guadalquivir River, as the Adriatic sturgeon Acipenser naccarii Bonaparte, 1836, suggesting that both A. sturio and A. naccarii could be native to Spain. To test this theory, we compared partial mitochondrial cytochrome b (cyt b) gene sequences obtained from museum specimens of A. sturio that originated from the Iberian Peninsula, the Adriatic and the North Sea, as well as from live individuals of the Gironde River population in France. Specimens of A. naccarii and of the Siberian sturgeon Acipenser baerii Brandt, 1869 from fish farms were also included in the study. DNA from museum specimens was successfully amplified using the protocol of France and Kocher (1996) for DNA extraction from formalin-fixed and ethanol-preserved samples. Phylogenetic analysis was performed on partial cyt b gene sequences (over 402-bp and 245-bp). We identified specimen EBD 8174 as A. sturio, confirming the opinion that A. sturio is the only sturgeon species of the Iberian Peninsula. Further molecular analyses of museum specimens are needed for a description of the historical intraspecies genetic variation within A. sturio. This information is crucial for any future recovery plan for this species. Our comparison also showed interspecies sequence divergence ranging from 6.91% (A. sturio/A. naccarii) to 7.43% (A. sturio/A. baerii).Históricamente, el esturión atlántico Acipenser sturio L., 1758 ha sido considerado la única especie de esturión que vive en los ríos de la península Ibérica, siendo así demostrado por múltiples estudios morfológicos recientes. Sin embargo, un trabajo reciente identificó el ejemplar del río Guadalquivir EBD 8174 como Acipenser naccarii Bonaparte, 1836, sugiriendo que ambas especies de esturión podrían ser nativas de España. Para comprobar esta nueva teoría, se han analizado las secuencias del gen citocromo b mitocondrial en muestras de esturión atlántico preservadas en varios museos procedentes de la península Ibérica, el mar Adriático y el mar del Norte, así como material fresco del río Garona. Además, se han estudiado con fines comparativos varias muestras de A. naccarii y Acipenser baerii Brandt, 1869 procedentes de piscifactorías. Las muestras de museos fueron amplificadas con éxito usando un protocolo específico utilizado para material fijado en formol y preservado en alcohol. La muestra de esturión de España (EBD 8174) fue identificada como A. sturio. Este resulta do confirma que A. sturio es la única especie de esturión en la península Ibérica. De cualquier manera, antes de abordar los planes de recuperación, sería necesario realizar análisis moleculares complementarios para describir las posibles variaciones genéticas existentes entre poblaciones.     Nephrops discards, size composition, recruitment and directed effort of the Spanish fleets in Porcupine Bank (FU 16)

    Spanish fleets have been fishing Norway lobster (Nephrops norvegicus) in Porcupine Bank for more than 45 years. Despite a huge Spanish effort descent in the area during this period, nowadays Spain is after Ireland the second country in Nephrops landings from this functional unit (12%). Nephrops discards in the Spanish fleets were traditionally considered negligible, but a revision about the issue is necessary. On the other hand, there are problems since 2005 to carry out length sampling from the fishery on the ports, since retained catch is now frozen on board. This lack of information can be addressed by length information collected by the observers on board. Concerning effort, Spain has been providing in the last decades effort data of the hake directed fleet (that collects almost all Nephrops catch) for the successive ICES working groups related to FU 16 Nephrops. New effort information more accurate and directed to Nephrops is needed. Taking into account this demands, discards rates and estimations, catch length information and Nephrops directed effort are presented on this document

    Nephrops Sentinel Fishery in Functional Unit 25 (North Galicia) 2017-2019

    The ICES Working Group for the Bay of Biscay and the Iberian Waters Ecoregion (WGBIE) as-sesses the status of 23 stocks distributed from ICES Divisions 3.a–4.a though to Subarea 9, mostly distributed in Subareas 7, 8 and 9. The group was tasked with conducting assessments of stock status for 14 stocks using analytical, forecast methods or trends indicators to provide catch fore-casts and a first draft of the ICES advice for 2021. For two of the Nephrops stocks updates were provided on catch data with the advice release delayed until October after the completion of the surveys used for the assessment. For the remaining 9 stocks not scheduled for advice this year, after the stock information update, no specific revision of the advice was proposed. The advice for these stocks, released in 2019, is valid for the years 2020 and 2021 or for 2020 to 2022. Analytical assessments using age-structured models were conducted for the northern stock of white anglerfish, the northern and southern stocks of megrim, four-spot megrim in Iberian Waters and sole in the Bay of Biscay. The two hake stocks and one southern stock of anglerfish were assessed using models that allow the use of length-structured data (no age data). A surplus-production model, without age or length structure, was used to assess the second southern stock of anglerfish and an analytical age-length structure model was used for the European seabass in the Bay of Biscay. The state of stocks for which no analytical assessment could be performed was inferred from examination of catch, commercial LPUE or CPUE data and from survey information, where available. The length-structured assessment for the southern stock of hake was rejected during the working group which resulted in the downgrading of the stock from Category 1 to 3 as an interim solution. This decision was also supported by the absence of clear guidelines on how to adjust fore-casts for advice when using the decision tree recommended by WKFORBIAS (ICES, 2020) for stocks with strong retrospective patterns. This year advice for the stock followed the 2 over 3-year rule based on survey and LPUE trends. A SPiCT model for the stock was explored for ref-erence points but some inconsistencies were found among biomass indices and the retrospective patterns were also problematic. Intersessional work (online workshop) to migrate assessment analyses to a Stock Synthesis model is planned before the end of the year. Despite an ICES data call with a deadline of six weeks before the meeting, the recurrent late data submission to ICES for most stocks has occurred, worsened by the COVID-19 disruption. This delayed the process of having the data quality checked and the assessment completed before the start of the working group. This is an important matter of concerns for the working group members. In response to the spread of COVID-19 virus, all ICES assessment and advice physical meetings were suspended and held remotely. The 2020 advice sheets for 13 stocks were abbreviated and will be released with advice released in 2019 as annex. A full advice sheet, however, was done for the southern hake due to the change in category of the stock. The structure of the report is set out with section 1 presenting a summary for each stock, discuss-ing general issues and conclusions. Section 2 provides descriptions of the relevant fishing fleets and surveys used in the assessment of the stocks. Sections 3–18 contain the single stock assess-ments
