Life cycles or longer tenures? A performance and employment duration model for Spanish basketball coaches
This work has been partially funded by the Spanish Ministry of Education (project ECO2010-20483) and the Regional Government of Andalusia (project P11-SEJ-7988).This study analyses the effect of basketball coaches on performance and the question of life cycles on their
tenures. From theoretical perspectives like coach-performance relationship, succession theories, life cycle
theory, and based on a longitudinal analysis from 1997 to 2012 of a professional Spanish basketball league, we
show that the objective established at the season’s start and coach quality positively influence team
performance, that a mid-season coaching change negatively influences performance, and the existence of longer
tenures coaches that improve team performance. The work is especially interested for sport managers, sport
coaches in their decisions-taking, but it is useful to general management to understand the consequences of the
tenures or dismissals of their key managers on results.Spanish Ministry of Education ECO2010-20483Regional Government of Andalusia P11-SEJ-798
High performance of professional basketball players and the settings to measure their regularity: evidence from the Spanish ACB League
Available at: <http://siba-ese.unisalento.it/index.php/ejasa/article/view/19295/17877In this paper, we analyse the relationship between performance and regularity to avoid the problem to the use of averages in sports statistics given their sensitivity to extreme data. The aim of this work is to establish which statistics discriminate between the high and low performance and regularity of basketball players using a performance-regularity index. The sample is composed of players from the Spanish professional basketball league, ACB League, from 2014-2015. We divided the sample into players with low, medium and high performance and regularity through a k-means method and a discriminant analysis associating high numbers of rebounds, assists and steals with high performance and regularity and higher numbers of 3- point shots, turnovers and fouls with low performance and regularity. These results should help coaches and sports managers design strategies that improve performance and recruiting for their teams.
Proyecto ECO2013-47009-PProyecto P11-SEJ-798
Recovering performance in the short term after coach succession in Spanish basketball organisations
This work has been partially funded by the Spanish Ministry of Education (project ECO2013-47009-P) and the Regional Government of Andalusia (project P11-SEJ-7988). The authors
want to thank the members of the research group, “Innovation, Sustainability and Business
Development” (SEJ-481).Research papers on succession processes in sports organisations have usually shown contradictory results. Several factors can
explain the different effects on performance after changes, so the purpose of this paper is to obtain a better understanding of coach changes and their impacts on short-term performance. For this purpose, we use ordinary least squares (with Stata) to analyse panel data from a longitudinal sample of 15 years (from the 1997–1998 season to the 2011–2012 season) of Spanish
professional basketball organisations, examining all changes in head coaches that occurred during the teams’ competitive
seasons using the variables of coach experience or human capital changes within the organisation after the change of coach to
determine the repercussions of these changes on performance. The results, with p < .05, support two hypotheses: H2, the
possibility of short-term improved performance in organisations after a coach change; and H3, if a coach change is accompanied
by more profound changes in human capital (players) the result is worse performance. These results are not contradictory because
they indicate that it is possible to recover performance in the short term, but if managers make too many changes at the same
time, the team cannot coordinate itself to recover its performance. For organisations, this observation is important because
organisations can change key leaders when performance is low but must consider that a large number of simultaneous changes
are overly risky because this increases instability and disruption.Spanish Ministry of Education (project ECO2013-47009-P)Regional Government of Andalusia (project P11-SEJ-7988
A multicriteria selection system based on player performance. Case study: The Spanish ACB Basketball League
In this paper, we describe an approach to rank sport players based on their
efficiency. Although is extremely useful to analyze the performance of team
games there is no unanimity on the use of a single index to perform such a
ranking. We propose a method to summarize the huge amount of information
collected at different aspects of a sport team which is almost daily publicly
available. The tool will allow agents involved in a player's negotiation to
show the strengths (and weaknesses) of the player with respect to other
players. The approach is based on applying a multicriteria outranking
methodology using as alternatives the potential players and criteria different
efficiency indices. A novel automatic parameter tuning approach is detailed
that will allow coaches and sports managers to design templates and sports
strategies that improve the efficiency of their teams. We report the results
performed over the available information on the ACB Basketball League, and we
show how it can be easily implemented and interpreted in practice by
decision-makers non familiar with the mathematical side of the methodology.Comment: 17 pages, 6 Tables, 4 Figure
Relationship between institutional factors and entrepreneurship: a quantitative analysis
The majority of published studies about the relation between institutional and entrepreneurial factors lack of an adequate empirical study.

This version is the one submitted to the journal for review. The final accepted article is published in International Journal of Business Environment: https://doi.org/10.1504/IJBE.2012.046215.This paper aims to highlight the importance of institutional theory in analysing entrepreneurship. In order to do that, an empirical analysis of how the institutional environment influences the entrepreneurial orientation of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) has been performed. The model presented in this study starts from the analysis of the dimensions of the institutional environment that have been empirically less analysed: the cognitive and normative dimensions, as well as the entrepreneurial orientation in terms of proactiveness, innovativeness and risk-taking. Our results contribute to the current entrepreneurship research as they expand the development of the relationships between institutions and entrepreneurship.Proyecto ECO2010-20483Proyecto P06-SEJ-405

Benefit Communication and Its Effects on Employees’ Benefit Level Satisfaction: The Multiple Mediating Effects of POS and Benefit Comparison
This is the draft version sent to the journal for review. The accepted and published article can be found at: https://doi.org/10.1177/2329488420943667Many firms offer employees a broad range of benefits as part of their compensation. However, little attention has been given to the extent to which firms communicate with their employees in relation to such benefits. This study proposes that benefit
communication can have both direct and indirect positive effects on employees’ benefit level satisfaction. The effects of benefit communication were examined by means of a survey among 828 employees of different Spanish firms. This study
hypothesized and found that benefit communication led to increased benefit level satisfaction. Similarly, this study found that benefit communication can influence benefit level satisfaction through the multiple intermediating effects of employees’
perceived organizational support and employees’ comparison of their benefits with those of referent others. These results imply that academics and practitioners must pay attention to providing adequate benefit communication in order to ensure the effectiveness of benefits. Proyecto ECO2016-75909-PProyecto ECO2017-88222-PProyecto PP2016-PJI0
