Dimerizations in spin- antiferromagnetic chains with three-spin interaction
We discuss spin- antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chains with three-spin
interactions, next-nearest-neighbor interactions, and bond alternation. First,
we prove rigorously that there exist parameter regions of the exact dimerized
ground state in this system. This is a generalization of the Majumdar-Ghosh
model to arbitrary . Next, we discuss the ground-state phase diagram of the
models by introducing several effective field theories and the universality
classes of the transitions are described by the level-
Wess-Zumino-Witten model and the Gaussian model. Finally, we determine the
phase diagrams of and systems by using exact diagonalization and

Spatial-Importance-Based Computation Scheme for Real-Time Object Detection From 3D Sensor Data
Three-dimensional (3D) sensor networks using multiple light-detection-and-ranging (LIDAR) sensors are good for smart monitoring of spots, such as intersections, with high potential risk of road-traffic accidents. The image sensors must share the strictly limited computation capacity of an edge computer. To have the computation speeds required from real-time applications, the system must have a short computation delay while maintaining the quality of the output, e.g., the accuracy of the object detection. This paper proposes a spatial-importance-based computation scheme that can be implemented on an edge computer of image-sensor networks composed of 3D sensors. The scheme considers regions where objects exist as more likely to be ones of higher spatial importance. It processes point-cloud data from each region according to the spatial importance of that region. By prioritizing regions with high spatial importance, it shortens the computation delay involved in the object detection. A point-cloud dataset obtained by a moving car equipped with a LIDAR unit was used to numerically evaluate the proposed scheme. The results indicate that the scheme shortens the delay in object detection
Near-Infrared Imaging Polarimetry of S106 Cluster-Forming Region with SIRPOL
We present the results of wide-field JHKs polarimetry toward the HII region
S106 using the IRSF (Infrared Survey Facility) telescope. Our polarimetry data
revealed an extended (up to ~ 5') polarized nebula over S106. We confirmed the
position of the illuminating source of most of the nebula as consistent with
S106 IRS4 through an analysis of polarization vectors. The bright portion of
the polarized intensity is consistent with the red wing component of the
molecular gas. Diffuse polarized intensity emission is distributed along the
north--south molecular gas lanes. We found the interaction region between the
radiation from S106 IRS4 and the dense gas. In addition, we also discovered two
small polarization nebulae, SIRN1 and SIRN2, associated with a young stellar
objects (YSO). Aperture polarimetry of point-like sources in this region was
carried out for the first time. The regional magnetic field structures were
derived using point-like source aperture polarimetry, and the magnetic field
structure position angle around the cluster region in S106 was found to be ~
120\arcdeg. The magnetic fields in the cluster region, however, have three
type position angles: ~ 20\arcdeg, ~ 80\arcdeg, and ~ 120\arcdeg. The
present magnetic field structures are consistent with results obtained by
submillimeter continuum observations. We found that the magnetic field
direction in the dense gas region is not consistent with that of the low

Increased tissue levels of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids prevents pathological preterm birth
Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids such as eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) have anti-inflammatory effects. Preterm birth is an important problem in modern obstetrics and one of the main causes is an inflammation. We here showed that abundance of omega-3 fatty acids reduced the incidence of preterm birth induced by LPS with fat-1 mice, capable of converting omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids. We also indicated that the gene expression of IL-6 and IL-1β in uteruses and the number of cervical infiltrating macrophages were reduced in fat-1 mice. The analyses of lipid metabolomics showed the high level of 18-hydroxyeicosapentaenoate in fat-1 mice, which was derived from EPA and was metabolized to anti-inflammatory product named resolvin E3 (RvE3). We finally showed that the administration of RvE3 to LPS-exposed pregnant wild type mice lowered the incidence of preterm birth. Our data suggest that RvE3 could be a potential new therapeutic for the prevention of preterm birth
Parathyroid hormone 1 (1-34) acts on the scales and involves calcium metabolism in goldfish
金沢大学環日本海域環境研究センターThe effect of fugu parathyroid hormone 1 (fugu PTH1) on osteoblasts and osteoclasts in teleosts was examined with an assay system using teleost scale and the following markers: alkaline phosphatase (ALP) for osteoblasts and tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) for osteoclasts. Synthetic fugu PTH1 (1-34) (100 pg/ml-10 ng/ml) significantly increased ALP activity at 6 h of incubation. High-dose (10 ng/ml) fugu PTH1 significantly increased ALP activity even after 18 h of incubation. In the case of TRAP activity, fugu PTH1 did not change at 6 h of incubation, but fugu PTH1 (100 pg/ml-10 ng/ml) significantly increased TRAP activity at 18 h. Similar results were obtained for human PTH (1-34), but there was an even greater response with fugu PTH1 than with human PTH. In vitro, we demonstrated that both the receptor activator of the NF-κB ligand in osteoblasts and the receptor activator NF-κB mRNA expression in osteoclasts increased significantly by fugu PTH1 treatment. In an in vivo experiment, fugu PTH1 induced hypercalcemia resulted from the increase of both osteoblastic and osteoclastic activities in the scale as well as the decrease of scale calcium contents after fugu PTH1 injection. In addition, an in vitro experiment with intramuscular autotransplanted scale indicated that the ratio of multinucleated osteoclasts/mononucleated osteoclasts in PTH-treated scales was significantly higher than that in the control scales. Thus, we concluded that PTH acts on osteoblasts and osteoclasts in the scales and regulates calcium metabolism in goldfish. © 2011 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved
