    Nonlinear Response of Underground Duct Structures with Due Attention to Seismic Input Ground Motions

    Under destructive earthquake motions, structures behave heavily in nonlinear manner that is quite different from the linear response computation. The underground structures such as tunnels, ducts are susceptible to the ground motions so that the nonlinear interaction analysis should be performed for the reliable design. In case of irregular soil profile, due to the surface wave generation, the vertical motions come out to a less negligible extent compared to the horizontal motions. The present paper has concerned with such nonlinear response evaluation of a duct structure under strong motions. The effect of the transient characteristics in the inland type and ocean type earthquake motions is investigated. The effect of the vertical component in the ground motions is also evaluated

    Antidepressant-Like Activity of 10-Hydroxy-Trans-2-Decenoic Acid, a Unique Unsaturated Fatty Acid of Royal Jelly, in Stress-Inducible Depression-Like Mouse Model

    Symptoms of depression and anxiety appeared in mice after they had been subjected to a combination of forced swimming for 15 min followed by being kept in cages that were sequentially subjected to leaning, drenching, and rotation within 1-2 days for a total of 3 weeks. The animals were then evaluated by the tail-suspension test, elevated plus-maze test, and open-field test at 1 day after the end of stress exposure. Using these experimental systems, we found that 10-hydroxy-trans-2-decenoic acid (HDEA), an unsaturated fatty acid unique to royal jelly (RJ), protected against the depression and anxiety when intraperitoneally administered once a day for 3 weeks simultaneously with the stress loading. Intraperitoneally administered RJ, a rich source of HDEA, was also protective against the depression, but RJ given by the oral route was less effective. Our present results demonstrate that HDEA and RJ, a natural source of it, were effective in ameliorating the stress-inducible symptoms of depression and anxiety

    Periodicities of palaeo-climatic records extracted from the Dome Fuji deep core

    The Antarctic ice sheet preserves palaeo-climate information in the form of physical and chemical stratigraphy. A deep ice core was continuously drilled down to a depth of 2503m at Dome Fuji Station, East Dronning Maud Land, Antarctica, during the 1993-97 JARE inland operations. A time scale for the Dome Fuji core is calculated from past accumulation rates and an ice flow model. A depth-age profile was obtained for the past 320kyr back in time. The obtained palaeo-temperature profile shows the past three glacial and interglacial periods. The power spectrum for oxygen isotope variation for 320kyr shows three dominant cycles of 107kyr, 40kyr and 21kyr. Each of these three cycles is similar to Milankovitch cycles. Moving-window spectrum analysis, using a 130kyr window stepped by 10kyr over the past 320kyr, found these main cycles in every age. Variations of other chemical concentrations were also recovered from the Dome Fuji ice core, and are inversely correlated to the temperature profile. Concentrations of terrestrial and marine origin substances are high in glacial periods, and low in interglacial periods. Over the past 320kyr, the dominant periodicities of temperature were also detected in almost all chemical records

    Latent SHAP: Toward Practical Human-Interpretable Explanations

    Model agnostic feature attribution algorithms (such as SHAP and LIME) are ubiquitous techniques for explaining the decisions of complex classification models, such as deep neural networks. However, since complex classification models produce superior performance when trained on low-level (or encoded) features, in many cases, the explanations generated by these algorithms are neither interpretable nor usable by humans. Methods proposed in recent studies that support the generation of human-interpretable explanations are impractical, because they require a fully invertible transformation function that maps the model's input features to the human-interpretable features. In this work, we introduce Latent SHAP, a black-box feature attribution framework that provides human-interpretable explanations, without the requirement for a fully invertible transformation function. We demonstrate Latent SHAP's effectiveness using (1) a controlled experiment where invertible transformation functions are available, which enables robust quantitative evaluation of our method, and (2) celebrity attractiveness classification (using the CelebA dataset) where invertible transformation functions are not available, which enables thorough qualitative evaluation of our method

    Cold preservation of the human colon and ileum with University of Wisconsin solution

    The inclusion of the colon in the intestinal graft resulted in worsening patient and graft outcome and increased the incidence of infection and rejection. In this study, we examine the role of ischemia on the barrier function of the epithelium during cold ischemia. Samples were collected from 15 harvested and transplanted human donor grafts (colon, 10; ileum, 6), which were immersed in University of Wisconsin (UW) solution. Ischemia (6, 12, 24, and 45 h) and reoxygenation were performed to evaluate the mucosal electrical status using the Ussing chamber technique. The functions of enterocytes and crypt cells were tested by glucose and theophylline challenge. Modified Park's classification was applied to evaluate the severity of mucosal damage under light microscopy. The colon had higher levels of baseline potential difference, short-circuit current, and resistance than the ileum during 6-48 h of ischemia. Colonic epithelial cells responded well to theophylline stimulation at 24 h of ischemia, while there was no ileal response. The colonic mucosa was histopathologically well preserved in UW solution for 48 h, and mucosal damage induced by reoxygenation was less than in the ileum. In conclusion, electrophysiologically and histopathologically, the colon is less susceptible to cold preservation damage than the ileum during storage with UW solution

    Tube choledochoureterostomy: A simple method for bile diversion

    A technique of bile diversion by tube choledochoureterostomy has been devised for the purpose of studying the role of bile in the intestinal absorption of drugs. This method was used in six dogs.     Post-operative pharyngocutaneous fistula after laryngectomy

    金沢大学附属病院耳鼻咽喉科Objectives: Although organ-preserving radiotherapy or chemoradiotherapy has offered good locoregional control, many patients still experience recurrent disease requiring salvage laryngectomy. The pharyngocutaneous fistula (PCF) is a common and troublesome complication in the early post-operative period after laryngectomy. Here, we evaluated the cause of PCF after laryngectomy, with special emphasis on radiotherapy and/or chemotherapy. Patients and methods: A total of 63 consecutive patients undergoing salvage total laryngectomy for squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx at Kanazawa University Hospital from 1990 to 2005 were reviewed. Forty of the 63 had received primary total laryngectomy (PL). Ten patients underwent radiotherapy alone (SL-RT) and 13 patients underwent concurrent chemoradiotherapy (SL-CRT) followed by salvage laryngectomy. Results: Overall, 17 of the 63 patients (27.0%) developed PCF after laryngectomy. Fisher\u27s exact test showed a significant increase of PCF formation in SL-CRT (7/13, 53.8%) compared with PL (7/40, 17.5%) (p = 0.0252). There were non-significant increases of PCF formation both in SL-CRT (7/13, 53.8%) compared with SL-RT (3/10, 30.0%) (p = 0.4015), and also in SL-RT (3/10, 30.0%) compared with PL (7/40, 17.5%) (p = 0.3969). The Mann-Whitney U-test showed that the duration of PCF was significantly longer for SL-CRT PCF (121.2 ± 95.0 days) compared with those for PL (39.0 ± 55.3 days) (p = 0.0298) or SL-RT (28.0 ± 16.2 days) (p = 0.0325). However, we did not find a significant difference in the duration of PCF with respect to PL (39.0 ± 55.3 days) and SL-RT (28.0 ± 16.2 days) (p = 0.4367). Conclusions: Although radiotherapy or chemotherapy has only a limited impact on PCF formation, concurrent chemoradiotherapy significantly increases PCF formation. The addition of chemotherapy to irradiation delays PCF closure. © 2007 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. All rights reserved

    X-ray and Neutron Study on the Structure of Hydrous SiO2 Glass up to 10 GPa

    The structure of hydrous amorphous SiO2 is fundamental in order to investigate the effects of water on the physicochemical properties of oxide glasses and magma. The hydrous SiO2 glass with 13 wt.% D2O was synthesized under high-pressure and high-temperature conditions and its structure was investigated by small angle X-ray scattering, X-ray diffraction, and neutron diffraction experiments at pressures of up to 10 GPa and room temperature. This hydrous glass is separated into two phases: a major phase rich in SiO2 and a minor phase rich in D2O molecules distributed as small domains with dimensions of less than 100 angstrom. Medium-range order of the hydrous glass shrinks compared to the anhydrous SiO2 glass by disruption of SiO4 linkage due to the formation of Si-OD deuterioxyl, while the response of its structure to pressure is almost the same as that of the anhydrous SiO2 glass. Most of D2O molecules are in the small domains and hardly penetrate into the void space in the ring consisting of SiO4 tetrahedra

    Induction of receptor for advanced glycation end products by EBV latent membrane protein 1 and its correlation with angiogenesis and cervical lymph node metastasis in nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

    金沢大学医薬保健研究域医学系PURPOSE: The EBV oncoprotein, latent membrane protein 1 (LMP1), contributes to the metastasis of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) by inducing factors to promote tumor invasion and angiogenesis. The receptor for advanced glycation end products (RAGE) is associated with abnormal angiogenesis in diabetic microangiopathies. Moreover, some papers have suggested the association of RAGE overexpression with tumor metastasis; thus, the associations of RAGE with LMP1 and angiogenesis in NPC were examined. EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: Forty-two patients with NPC were evaluated for expressions of LMP1, RAGE, and S100 proteins and for microvessel counts by immunohistochemistry. Then, the RAGE induction by LMP1 was examined with Western blotting and luciferase reporter assay. RESULTS: The microvessel counts were significantly higher in patients with high LMP1 expression or high RAGE expression compared with cases with low expressions (P=0.0049 and P<0.0001), respectively. Patients with advanced N classification were also significantly increased in these groups (P=0.0484 and P=0.0005). The expressions of LMP1 and RAGE proteins were clearly correlated in NPC tissues (P=0.0093). Transient transfection with LMP1 expression plasmid induced RAGE protein in Ad-AH cells. The expression of LMP1 transactivated the RAGE promoter as shown by luciferase reporter assay. Mutation of the reporter at nuclear factor-kappaB binding site (-671 to -663) abolished transactivation of the RAGE promoter by LMP1. CONCLUSION: These results suggest that LMP1-induced RAGE enhances lymph node metastasis through the induction of angiogenesis in NPC. Nuclear factor-kappaB binding site (-671 to -663) is essential for transactivation of the RAGE promoter by LMP1.全文公開20090
