Enantioselective Synthesis of 5-epi-Citreoviral Using Ruthenium-Catalyzed Asymmetric Ring-Closing Metathesis
Chiral ruthenium olefin metathesis catalysts can perform asymmetric ring-closing reactions in ≥90% ee with low catalyst loadings. To illustrate the practicality of these reactions and the products they form, an enantioselective total synthesis of 5-epi-citreoviral was completed by using an asymmetric ring-closing olefin metathesis reaction as a key step early in the synthesis. All of the stereocenters in the final compound were set by using the chiral center generated by asymmetric olefin metathesis
Applying Ada to Beech Starship avionics
As Ada solidified in its development, it became evident that it offered advantages for avionics systems because of it support for modern software engineering principles and real time applications. An Ada programming support environment was developed for two major avionics subsystems in the Beech Starship. The two subsystems include electronic flight instrument displays and the flight management computer system. Both of these systems use multiple Intel 80186 microprocessors. The flight management computer provides flight planning, navigation displays, primary flight display of checklists and other pilot advisory information. Together these systems represent nearly 80,000 lines of Ada source code and to date approximately 30 man years of effort. The Beech Starship avionics systems are in flight testing
The interlaminar fracture toughness of woven graphite/epoxy composites
The interlaminar fracture toughness of 2-D graphite/epoxy woven composites was determined as a function of stacking sequence, thickness, and weave pattern. Plain, oxford, 5-harness satin, and 8-harness satin weaves of T300/934 material were evaluated by the double cantilever beam test. The fabric material had a G (sub Ic) ranging from 2 to 8 times greater than 0 degrees unidirectional T300/934 tape material. The interlaminar fracture toughness of a particular weave style was dependent on whether the stacking sequence was symmetric or asymmetric and, in some cases, on the fabric orientation
Effect of cryogenic irradiation on NERVA structural alloys
Several alloys (Hastelloy X, AISI 347, A-286 bolts, Inconel 718, Al 7039-T63 and Ti-5Al-2.5Sn ELI) were irradiated in liquid nitrogen (140 R) to neutron fluences between 10 to the 17th power and 10 to the 19th power nvt (E greater than 1.0 Mev). After irradiation, tensile properties were obtained in liquid nitrogen without permitting any warmup except for some specimens which were annealed at 540 R. The usual trend of radiation damage typical for materials irradiated at and above room temperature was observed, such as an increase in strength and decrease in ductility. However, the damage at 140 R was greater because this temperature prevented the annealing of radiation-induced defects which occurs above 140 R
Front-End electronics configuration system for CMS
The four LHC experiments at CERN have decided to use a commercial SCADA
(Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition) product for the supervision of their
DCS (Detector Control System). The selected SCADA, which is therefore used for
the CMS DCS, is PVSS II from the company ETM. This SCADA has its own database,
which is suitable for storing conventional controls data such as voltages,
temperatures and pressures. In addition, calibration data and FE (Front-End)
electronics configuration need to be stored. The amount of these data is too
large to be stored in the SCADA database [1]. Therefore an external database
will be used for managing such data. However, this database should be
completely integrated into the SCADA framework, it should be accessible from
the SCADA and the SCADA features, e.g. alarming, logging should be benefited
from. For prototyping, Oracle 8i was selected as the external database manager.
The development of the control system for calibration constants and FE
electronics configuration has been done in close collaboration with the CMS
tracker group and JCOP (Joint COntrols Project)(1).
(1)The four LHC experiments and the CERN IT/CO group has merged their efforts
to build the experiments controls systems and set up the JCOP at the end of
December, 1997 for this purpose.Comment: 3 pages, 4 figures, Icaleps'01 conference PSN WEDT00
