    Dynamic Modes of Microcapsules in Steady Shear Flow: Effects of Bending and Shear Elasticities

    The dynamics of microcapsules in steady shear flow was studied using a theoretical approach based on three variables: The Taylor deformation parameter αD\alpha_{\rm D}, the inclination angle θ\theta, and the phase angle ϕ\phi of the membrane rotation. It is found that the dynamic phase diagram shows a remarkable change with an increase in the ratio of the membrane shear and bending elasticities. A fluid vesicle (no shear elasticity) exhibits three dynamic modes: (i) Tank-treading (TT) at low viscosity ηin\eta_{\rm {in}} of internal fluid (αD\alpha_{\rm D} and θ\theta relaxes to constant values), (ii) Tumbling (TB) at high ηin\eta_{\rm {in}} (θ\theta rotates), and (iii) Swinging (SW) at middle ηin\eta_{\rm {in}} and high shear rate γ˙\dot\gamma (θ\theta oscillates). All of three modes are accompanied by a membrane (ϕ\phi) rotation. For microcapsules with low shear elasticity, the TB phase with no ϕ\phi rotation and the coexistence phase of SW and TB motions are induced by the energy barrier of ϕ\phi rotation. Synchronization of ϕ\phi rotation with TB rotation or SW oscillation occurs with integer ratios of rotational frequencies. At high shear elasticity, where a saddle point in the energy potential disappears, intermediate phases vanish, and either ϕ\phi or θ\theta rotation occurs. This phase behavior agrees with recent simulation results of microcapsules with low bending elasticity.Comment: 11 pages, 14 figure

    Toward RADSCAT measurements over the sea and their interpretation

    Investigations into several areas which are essential to the execution and interpretation of suborbital observations by composite radiometer - scatterometer sensor (RADSCAT) are reported. Experiments and theory were developed to demonstrate the remote anemometric capability of the sensor over the sea through various weather conditions. It is shown that weather situations found in extra tropical cyclones are useful for demonstrating the all weather capability of the composite sensor. The large scale fluctuations of the wind over the sea dictate the observational coverage required to correlate measurements with the mean surface wind speed. Various theoretical investigations were performed to establish a premise for the joint interpretation of the experiment data. The effects of clouds and rains on downward radiometric observations over the sea were computed. A method of predicting atmospheric attenuation from joint observations is developed. In other theoretical efforts, the emission and scattering characteristics of the sea were derived. Composite surface theories with coherent and noncoherent assumptions were employed

    Clinical trial of FK 506 immunosuppression in adult cardiac transplantation

    The new immunosuppressive agent FK 506 was used as primary immunotherapy in conjunction with low-dose steroids and azathioprine in 72 patients subsequent to orthotopic cardiac transplantation. Overall patient survival at a mean follow-up of 360 days was 92%. The number of episodes of cardiac rejection (grade 3A or greater) within 90 days of transplantation was 0.95 per patient. The actuarial freedom from rejection at 90 days was 41%. Achievement of this level of immunosuppression is comparable with that of cyclosporine-based triple-drug therapy with OKT3 immunoprophylaxis. Thirty percent of patients were tapered off all steroids, and the average steroid dose in the group who received steroids was 8.6 mg of prednisone per day. The incidence of infection reflected the diminished necessity for steroids: seven major infections (10%) and 11 minor infections (16%). Renal dysfunction occurred during the perioperative period in most patients in this trial. However, the incidence of hypertension was 54% compared with 70% during the cyclosporine era. Ten adults underwent successful rescue therapy with FK 506 after cardiac rejection refractory to conventional immunotherapy. Side effects of FK 506 were notably few, and the results of the trial are encouraging for the future of the cardiac transplant recipient. © 1992

    Dimension reduction based on canonical correlation

    Dimension reduction is helpful and often necessary in exploring nonlinear or nonparametric regression structures with a large number of predictors. We consider using the canonical variables from the design space whose correlations with a spline basis in the response space are significant. The method can be viewed as a variant of sliced inverse regression (SIR) with simple slicing replaced by B-spline basis functions. The asymptotic distribution theory we develop extends to weakly dependent stationary sequences and enables us to consider asymptotic tests that are useful in determining the number of significant dimensions for modeling. We compare several tests for dimensionality and make specific recommendations for dimension selection based on our theoretical and empirical studies. These tests apply to any form of SIR. The methodology and some of the practical issues are illustrated through a tuition study of American colleges.published_or_final_versio

    Use of graphene as protection film in biological environments

    Corrosion of metal in biomedical devices could cause serious health problems to patients. Currently ceramics coating materials used in metal implants can reduce corrosion to some extent with limitations. Here we proposed graphene as a biocompatible protective film for metal potentially for biomedical application. We confirmed graphene effectively inhibits Cu surface from corrosion in different biological aqueous environments. Results from cell viability tests suggested that graphene greatly eliminates the toxicity of Cu by inhibiting corrosion and reducing the concentration of Cu(2+) ions produced. We demonstrated that additional thiol derivatives assembled on graphene coated Cu surface can prominently enhance durability of sole graphene protection limited by the defects in graphene film. We also demonstrated that graphene coating reduced the immune response to metal in a clinical setting for the first time through the lymphocyte transformation test. Finally, an animal experiment showed the effective protection of graphene to Cu under in vivo condition. Our results open up the potential for using graphene coating to protect metal surface in biomedical application
