Evaluation of the Effectiveness of a Group Intervention Approach for Nurses Exposed to Violent Speech or Violence Caused by Patients: A Randomized Controlled Trial

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a group intervention approach aimed at improving the mental health of psychiatric nurses exposed to violent speech/violence. Sixty-two nurses having experienced serious episodes of violent speech/violence were enrolled in this study. A group intervention approach was used in the intervention group. For both the intervention and the control groups, evaluations were conducted at three time points. Evaluations were conducted using the Impact of Event Scale-Revised (IES-R) and Profile of Mood States (POMS). The results showed that changes in the flashback, hyper-arousal, avoidance behavior, and total scores on the IES-R and anxiety and depression scores on the POMS differed significantly between the two groups. These results suggest that a group intervention approach can lessen the psychological burden of nurses exposed to violence and reduce their mental stress

国立国語研究所時空間変異研究系「依頼」「勧誘」「申し出」などの場面を設定したロールプレイ会話を対象として,「きりだし」「状況説明」「行動の促し」といったコミュニケーション機能や機能的要素などの観点から整理を進めてきた結果の一部を紹介する。This paper outlines a research project now in progress which aims to analyze the characteristics of communication strategies used in Japanese dialect conversations. Role-play data involving requests, invitations, and offers by native speakers of Japanese dialects has been gathered, and the analysis focuses on the communication strategies used for starting a conversation, for explaining a situation, and for encouraging a listener\u27s action

Psychological impact of verbal abuse and violence by patients on nurses working in psychiatric departments

The aim of this study was to assess the psychological impact of verbal abuse or violence by patients on nurses working in psychiatry departments and to identify factors related to their impact. Survey sheets were distributed to a total of 266 nurses working at two hospitals, and replies were obtained from 232 of them. Because three of them had less than 1 month of experience working in the psychiatry department and four of them failed to answer all the questions, valid replies were obtained from 225 nurses. Among the 225 whose replies were valid, 141 nurses who replied that they had experienced verbal abuse or violence that left an impression on them remained as the subjects of the final analysis. The Impact of Event Scale-Revised (IES-R) was used to evaluate psychological impact. Of the nurses who had been exposed to verbal abuse or violence that left an impression, 21 0x138ab8p-890d scores that exceeded the IES-R cut-off point (24/25), and low satisfaction with family support, and neuroticism on the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire-Revised were shown to have contributed to the psychological impact. Nurses working in psychiatry departments were shown to experience a severe psychological impact when exposed to verbal abuse or violence. These results suggest the need for mental care approaches for nurses working in psychiatry departments

PsyR, a transcriptional regulator in quorum sensing system, binds lux box-like sequence in psyI promoter without AHL quorum sensing molecule and activates psyI transcription with AHL in Pseudomonas syringae pv. tabaci 6605

Quorum sensing (QS) is a mechanism for bacterial cell-cell communication using QS signals. N-acyl-homoserine lactones (AHLs), QS signals in Pseudomonas syringae pv. tabaci (Pta) 6605, are synthesized by an AHL synthase (PsyI) and recognized by the cognate transcription factor PsyR. To reveal the role of PsyR in virulence, we generated a psyR mutant and complemented strains of Pta 6605 and found that the psyR mutant is remarkably reduced in AHL production and ability to cause disease and propagate in host tobacco leaves. The phenotypes of complemented strains were restored to that of the wild type (WT). Because the psyR mutant lost nearly all AHL production, we investigated the function of PsyR in the transcription of psyI and production of AHL. Electrophoretic mobility shift assays suggested that the recombinant PsyR protein binds the promoter region of psyI but not psyR without AHL. The addition of AHL did not significantly affect this binding. The binding core sequence of this region was identified as a 20-bp lux box-like sequence. To reveal the function of PsyR and AHL on psyI transcription, we constructed a psyI promoter::lacZYA chimeric reporter gene, and inserted it into the WT and psyI mutant of Pta 6605. beta-galactosidase activity increased in a bacterial density-dependent manner in the WT and also in a psyI mutant after the addition of exogenous AHL. These results indicate that the solo PsyR binds the lux box in the psyI promoter and activates transcription in the concomitant presence of AHL

Structural and photophysical characterisation of coordination and optical isomers of mononuclear ruthenium(II) polypyridyl 1,2,4-triazole complexes

The X-ray crystal structure of the N2 isomers of the Ru(bipy)2 complexes of Hphpztr (1) and Hpztr (2), (bipy = 2,2'-bipyridine, Hphpztr = 2-(5'-phenyl-4'H-[1,2,4]triazol-3'-yl)pyrazine and Hpztr = 2-(4'H-[1,2,4]triazol-3'-yl)pyrazine) are reported. The molecular structure obtained for 2 demonstrates an interesting structural aspect in the sharing of a single proton between two molecular units. The isolation of the Δ and Λ stereoisomers of 1 and [Ru(phen)2(pztr)]+ (phen = 1,10-phenanthroline) (3) by semipreparative HPLC is also reported. The compounds obtained are characterised by electronic spectroscopy and particular attention is paid to the photophysical properties of Δ and Λ isomers of 1 and 3, in chiral enantiopure and racemic solvents
