    The Goldstone solar system radar: A science instrument for planetary research

    The Goldstone Solar System Radar (GSSR) station at NASA's Deep Space Communications Complex in California's Mojave Desert is described. A short chronological account of the GSSR's technical development and scientific discoveries is given. This is followed by a basic discussion of how information is derived from the radar echo and how the raw information can be used to increase understanding of the solar system. A moderately detailed description of the radar system is given, and the engineering performance of the radar is discussed. The operating characteristics of the Arcibo Observatory in Puerto Rico are briefly described and compared with those of the GSSR. Planned and in-process improvements to the existing radar, as well as the performance of a hypothetical 128-m diameter antenna radar station, are described. A comprehensive bibliography of referred scientific and engineering articles presenting results that depended on data gathered by the instrument is provided

    The free energy in a class of quantum spin systems and interchange processes

    We study a class of quantum spin systems in the mean-field setting of the complete graph. For spin S=12S=\tfrac12 the model is the Heisenberg ferromagnet, for general spin S12NS\in\tfrac12\mathbb{N} it has a probabilistic representation as a cycle-weighted interchange process. We determine the free energy and the critical temperature (recovering results by T\'oth and by Penrose when S=12S=\tfrac12). The critical temperature is shown to coincide (as a function of SS) with that of the q=2S+1q=2S+1 state classical Potts model, and the phase transition is discontinuous when S1S\geq1.Comment: 22 page

    A key element to improved industry productivity is effective management of CAD/CAM information. To stimulate advancements in this area, a joint NASA/Navy/industry project designated Intergrated Programs for Aerospace-Vehicle Design (IPAD) is underway with the goal of raising aerospace industry productivity through advancement of technology to integrate and manage information involved in the design and manufacturing process. The project complements traditional NASA/DOD research to develop aerospace design technology and the Air Force's Integrated Computer-Aided Manufacturing (ICAM) program to advance CAM technology. IPAD research is guided by an Industry Technical Advisory Board (ITAB) composed of over 100 representatives from aerospace and computer companies

    Calibration of <i>Herschel</i> SPIRE FTS observations at different spectral resolutions

    The SPIRE Fourier Transform Spectrometer on-board the Herschel Space Observatory had two standard spectral resolution modes for science observations: high resolution (HR) and low resolution (LR), which could also be performed in sequence (H+LR). A comparison of the HR and LR resolution spectra taken in this sequential mode revealed a systematic discrepancy in the continuum level. Analysing the data at different stages during standard pipeline processing demonstrates that the telescope and instrument emission affect HR and H+LR observations in a systematically different way. The origin of this difference is found to lie in the variation of both the telescope and instrument response functions, while it is triggered by fast variation of the instrument temperatures. As it is not possible to trace the evolution of the response functions using housekeeping data from the instrument subsystems, the calibration cannot be corrected analytically. Therefore, an empirical correction for LR spectra has been developed, which removes the systematic noise introduced by the variation of the response functions

    Concurrent implementation of the Crank-Nicolson method for heat transfer analysis

    To exploit the significant gains in computing speed provided by Multiple Instruction Multiple Data (MIMD) computers, concurrent methods for practical problems need to be investigated and test problems implemented on actual hardware. One such problem class is heat transfer analysis which is important in many aerospace applications. This paper compares the efficiency of two alternate implementations of heat transfer analysis on an experimental MIMD computer called the Finite Element Machine (FEM). The implicit Crank-Nicolson method is used to solve concurrently the heat transfer equations by both iterative and direct methods. Comparison of actual timing results achieved for the two methods and their significance relative to more complex problems are discussed

    Identification of Walleye X Sauger Hybrid By Isozyme Electrophoresis

    Of 125 phenotypic walleye screened by isozyme electrophoresis, one unusual individual was detected and subsequently suspected of being a walleye (Stizostedion vitreum vitreum) x sauger (S. canadense) hybrid. The isozyme pattern obtained for L-iditol dehydrogenase (IDDH, E.C. 1.1.1.14), phosphoglucomutase (PGM, E.C. 5.4.2.2) and a fast migrating aspartate aminotransferase (AAT, E.C. 2.6.1.1) isozyme showed that this individual had both walleye and sauger isozymes. Isozyme analyses is a useful technique for distinguishing walleye x sauger hybrids from parent species. This is the first report of alleles of the AAT* locus being species specific for sauger and walleye, and the first confirmed report of naturally occurring walleye x sauger hybrids in Minnesota

    Contract NAS8-37891 was expanded in late 1989 to initiate analysis of Shuttle plume induced environments as a result of the substitution of the Advanced Solid Rocket Booster (ASRB) for the Redesigned Solid Rocket Booster (RSRB). To support this analysis, REMTECH became involved in subscale and full-scale solid rocket motor test programs which further expanded the scope of work. Later contract modifications included additional tasks to produce initial design cycle environments and to specify development flight instrumentation. Volume 3 of the final report describes these analyses and contains a summary of reports resulting from various studies
