    Pre-Supernova Outbursts via Wave Heating in Massive Stars II: Hydrogen-poor Stars

    Pre-supernova (SN) outbursts from massive stars may be driven by hydrodynamical wave energy emerging from the core of the progenitor star during late nuclear burning phases. Here, we examine the effects of wave heating in stars containing little or no hydrogen, i.e., progenitors of type IIb/Ib SNe. Because there is no massive hydrogen envelope, wave energy is thermalized near the stellar surface where the overlying atmospheric mass is small but the optical depth is large. Wave energy can thus unbind this material, driving an optically thick, super-Eddington wind. Using 1D hydodynamic MESA simulations of  ⁣5M\sim \! 5 \, M_\odot He stars, we find that wave heating can drive pre-SN outbursts composed of a dense wind whose mass loss rate can exceed  ⁣0.1M/yr\sim \! 0.1 \, M_\odot/{\rm yr}. The wind terminal velocities are a few 100km/s100 \, {\rm km}/{\rm s}, and outburst luminosities can reach  ⁣106L\sim \! 10^6 \, L_\odot. Wave-driven outbursts may be linked with observed or inferred pre-SN outbursts of type Ibn/transitional/transformational SNe, and pre-SN wave-driven mass loss is a good candidate to produce these types of SNe. However, we also show that non-linear wave breaking in the core of the star may prevent such outbursts in stars with thick convective helium-burning shells. Hence, only a limited subset of SN progenitors are likely to experience wave-driven pre-SN outbursts.Comment: Accepted to MNRA

    EFFECTS OF PORT USER FEES ON EXPORT GRAIN FLOW PATTERNS

    The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the effect of the proposed deep draft port user fee on export grain flow patterns and provide insight into potential marketing system adjustment costs which may result from diverted flows. A multiperiod, network flow model is used to conduct the analysis. Analyses show grain flow patterns to be affected most by a port specific fee which is based on weight. The annual variation in flows generated by imposition of port user charges in generally less than the historical year-to-year variation and, in most cases, the altered port area flows can be accommodated by existing infrastructure.International Relations/Trade,

    INFORMATION IMPACTS AND DETERMINANTS OF INFORMATION SELECTION: AN EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH

    Laboratory experimentation was used to assess the impacts of information disclosure in imperfect markets. A dual oligopoly market structure was designed with contract information disclosed to subjects under three treatments: no, partial, and full disclosure. Regression analysis revealed some increase in selling price with full information disclosure, but no discernable effects on negotiated prices with partial disclosure. Alternative specifications showed large traders earning significantly lower profits, and information on large traders significantly beneficial to both buyers and sellers. Probit analysis of information selection determinants revealed no significant economic content in trader requests for information under partial disclosure.Marketing,

    The Effect of Auditor Reporting Choice and Audit Committee Oversight Strength on Management Financial Disclosure Decisions

    Motivated by the current PCAOB proposed standard regarding expansion of the auditor’s reporting model, this study investigates the effect of auditor reporting choice on management disclosure decisions. The proposed standard would require auditors to identify and provide information about the most significant audit and financial reporting issues encountered during the audit in a new section of the audit report on Critical Audit Matters (CAMs). I develop theory to predict how auditor choices about reporting on CAMs might affect manager disclosure decisions. In addition, the study investigates how the effect of auditor reporting choice on management disclosure decisions depends on a very important governance structure, the audit committee. I find that management reacts to the auditor shining a spotlight on a highly uncertain critical accounting estimate by increasing their own disclosure of the matter and that this effect varies directly with the strength of the audit committee’s oversight. In addition, I find that as auditors increase the level of detail provided by the auditor in its CAM reporting, management responds with increased disclosure. Finally, when the auditor provides a detailed CAM discussion, it appears that managers are likely to increase disclosure of quantitative information that would enhance the financial statement user’s ability to quantify the risk in a critical accounting estimate.
