Localization and Quantum Hall Effect in Two-Dimensional Systems Under Strong Magnetic Fields(Transport and Fermiology)

Experimental researches of quantum transport properties of semiconductor two-dimensional electron systems in Si-MOSFETs and GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructures in high magnetic fields up to 27 T and at low temperatures down to 20 mK are performed. Analysis of the Hall conductivity of Si-MOSFETs based on a mobility edge model shows that the temperature dependence of the mobility edge can not be explained by existing theory of localization. The fractional quantum Hall effect is observed at the filling factor of 1/7 in heterostructures. Sample size dependence and magnetic field dependence of the breakdown of the integral quantum Hall effect in heterostructures reveal that the Hall current is carried not by the edge states but by the extended states in the localization in the bulk of the two-dimensional systems

This study aimed to retrospectively analyze the clinical outcomes of patients with pelvic and retroperitoneal bone and soft tissue sarcoma (BSTS). Overall, 187 patients with BSTS in the pelvis and retroperitoneal region treated at 19 specialized sarcoma centers in Japan were included. The prognostic factors related to overall survival (OS), local control (LC), and progression-free survival (PFS) were evaluated. The 3-year OS and LC rates in the 187 patients were 71.7% and 79.1%, respectively. The 3-year PFS in 166 patients without any distant metastases at the time of primary tumor diagnosis was 48.6%. Osteosarcoma showed significantly worse OS and PFS than other sarcomas of the pelvis and retroperitoneum. In the univariate analyses, larger primary tumor size, soft tissue tumor, distant metastasis at the time of primary tumor diagnosis, P2 location, chemotherapy, and osteosarcoma were poor prognostic factors correlated with OS. Larger primary tumor size, higher age, soft tissue tumor, chemotherapy, and osteosarcoma were poor prognostic factors correlated with PFS in patients without any metastasis at the initial presentation. Larger primary tumor size was the only poor prognostic factor correlation with LC. This study has clarified the epidemiology and prognosis of patients with pelvic and retroperitoneal BSTS in Japan

Eosinophilic gastroenteritis with ascites and diffuse intestinal wall thickening

A 60-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital with abdominal pain and diarrhea. Examination revealed eosinophilia (white blood count, 24,900/ml; eosinophils, 79.9%) and an elevated immunoglobulin E level. Abdominal computed tomography showed fluid collection and diffuse intestinal wall thickening, and biopsy specimens from the stomach, duodenum and colon showed eosinophil infiltration. We diagnosed the patient with eosinophilic gastroenteritis, and started treatment with steroid hormones (predonisolone, 40 mg/day perorally). The patient's symptoms and eosinophilia improved dramatically and she was discharged. Eosinophilic gastroenteritis is an inflammatory disease characterized by eosinophil infiltration into the gastrointestinal tract. It usually involves the stomach and small intestine, but may also involve the entire whole gastrointestinal tract. Although ascites sometimes complicates this disease, massive ascites, as in our patient, is rare. Here we report a case of eosinophilic gastroenteritis with massive ascites and diffuse intestinal wall thickening. Steroid hormones are an effective treatment for this disease, and early diagnosis and the administration of steroid hormones are essential
