    Majorana bound state of a Bogoliubov-de Gennes-Dirac Hamiltonian in arbitrary dimensions

    We study a Majorana zero-energy state bound to a hedgehog-like point defect in a topological superconductor described by a Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG)-Dirac type effective Hamiltonian. We first give an explicit wave function of a Majorana state by solving the BdG equation directly, from which an analytical index can be obtained. Next, by calculating the corresponding topological index, we show a precise equivalence between both indices to confirm the index theorem. Finally, we apply this observation to reexamine the role of another topological invariant, i.e., the Chern number associated with the Berry curvature proposed in the study of protected zero modes along the lines of topological classification of insulators and superconductors. We show that the Chern number is equivalent to the topological index, implying that it indeed reflects the number of zero-energy states. Our theoretical model belongs to the BDI class from the viewpoint of symmetry, whereas the spatial dimension of the system is left arbitrary throughout the paper.Comment: 12 page

    Customary Forest Managements and Its Challenges in East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia: An Implication of Constitutional Court Decision 2012

    Customary forests have not been adequately recognized in state forest management in Indonesia for a long time. However, in the last decades, several fundamental policy changes occurred, and the roles of local communities significantly recognized in forest management. The forest tenure reforms for customary communities are actively addressed after the Constitutional Court Decision (CCD) Number 35 in 2012. The objectives of this study are (1) to determine the changes in customary forest management in response to the CCD and (2) to discuss policy challenges after the CCD in East Nusa Tenggara Province. This study employed qualitative descriptive analysis methods. The result showed the different responses of customary communities related to the institutional development towards CCD. The lack of local regulations regarding customary peoples' rights still need to be solved. Besides, the claims of customary communities for customary forests overlapping with state conservation areas and other customary forests can make the problem more complicated

    Successful Surgical Treatment for Dysphagia Secondary to Descending Necrotizing Mediastinitis

    Descending necrotizing mediastinitis (DNM) is a life-threatening disease with a high fatality rate that occurs as a complication of deep neck abscess. DNM complicated by severe dysphagia during the postoperative period has been previously reported, but there have been no published cases of surgical treatment for severe dysphagia secondary to DNM. A 63-year-old man was diagnosed with a deep neck abscess followed by DNM. The patient had dysphagia after incision and drainage of the abscess and drainage for DNM with video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS). A comprehensive long-term physiotherapy program with a speech and language therapist did not reduce his dysphagia. Thus, the patient underwent laryngeal elevation and cricopharyngeal myotomy, which enabled oral intake. Surgery should be considered for prolonged severe restriction of laryngeal elevation and esophageal introitus opening that is unresponsive to physiotherapy with a speech and language therapist

    Another Law in Indonesia: Customary Land Tenure System Coexisting with State Order in Mutis Forest

    Local wisdom has been coexisting with the state system in several places in Indonesia. The Mountain Mutis Nature Reserve in East Nusa Tenggara province is the strict nature reserves, but a customary land tenure system, called suf, exists so far in the nature reserve. The objectives of this study are (1) to organize the historical territorialization process, (2) to clarify the customary land tenure system and activities for livelihoods by local people, and (3) to discuss the challenges of its land tenure system to manage forests sustainably as well as policy methods to harmonize legal pluralism in Mutis Area. Field observation and in-depth interviews with key informants were employed for data collection, and the collected data were analyzed by a qualitative descriptive method. The findings showed the traditional reward and punishment systems regarding extracting non-timber forest products, grazing livestock, and preventing forest fires were working well for sustainable forest management. However, increased pressure on forests due to future population growth appears to have an impact on the traditional system. It also showed the government officers and local people started some discussions to recognize the suf in the formal legal order. However, there were institutional problems to introduce current state systems. Therefore, it is required to flexibly operate or revise the state laws according to the actual situation to harmonize society between state and people

    Faint warm debris disks around nearby bright stars explored by AKARI and IRSF

    Context: Debris disks are important observational clues for understanding planetary-system formation process. In particular, faint warm debris disks may be related to late planet formation near 1 AU. A systematic search of faint warm debris disks is necessary to reveal terrestrial planet formation. Aims: Faint warm debris disks show excess emission that peaks at mid-IR wavelengths. Thus we explore debris disks using the AKARI mid-IR all-sky point source catalog (PSC), a product of the second generation unbiased IR all-sky survey. Methods : We investigate IR excess emission for 678 isolated main-sequence stars for which there are 18 micron detections in the AKARI mid-IR all-sky catalog by comparing their fluxes with the predicted fluxes of the photospheres based on optical to near-IR fluxes and model spectra. The near-IR fluxes are first taken from the 2MASS PSC. However, 286 stars with Ks<4.5 in our sample have large flux errors in the 2MASS photometry due to saturation. Thus we have measured accurate J, H, and Ks band fluxes, applying neutral density (ND) filters for Simultaneous InfraRed Imager for Unbiased Survey (SIRIUS) on IRSF, the \phi 1.4 m near-IR telescope in South Africa, and improved the flux accuracy from 14% to 1.8% on average. Results: We identified 53 debris-disk candidates including eight new detections from our sample of 678 main-sequence stars. The detection rate of debris disks for this work is ~8%, which is comparable with those in previous works by Spitzer and Herschel. Conclusion: The importance of this study is the detection of faint warm debris disks around nearby field stars. At least nine objects have a large amount of dust for their ages, which cannot be explained by the conventional steady-state collisional cascade model.Comment: 17 pages, 21 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysic

    New Processing Routes for Functionally Graded Materials and Structures through Combinations of Powder Metallurgy and Casting

    New processing routes for metal-matrix functionally graded materials (FGMs) and structures through combinations of powder metallurgy and casting are described in this chapter. Centrifugal mixed-powder method is introduced as a processing method for metal-matrix FGMs at first. The centrifugal mixed-powder method is a developed technique of centrifugal casting by setting predesigned mixed powder in a spinning mold in advance. As an example of processed FGMs by this method in our previous studies, Cu-based FGMs with dispersed diamond particles are shown. Graded structures in the Cu-based FGMs are investigated through scanning electron microscope (SEM) observations of microstructures. As the latest processing method for metal-matrix FGMs developed by our research group, centrifugal sintered-casting method is shown. The centrifugal sintered-casting method is a modified processing technique of the centrifugal mixed-powder method. In the centrifugal sintered-casting method, FGMs are processed by the combination of centrifugal sintering and centrifugal casting. Al–Si alloy and Cu-based FGMs with dispersed diamond particles are introduced as examples. Applications of metal-matrix FGMs processed by the centrifugal sintered-casting method are also described.
