Direct Imaging of Spatially Modulated Superfluid Phases in Atomic Fermion Systems

It is proposed that the spatially modulated superfluid phase, or the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state could be observed in resonant Fermion atomic condensates which are realized recently. We examine optimal experimental setups to achieve it by solving Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation both for idealized one-dimensional and realistic three-dimensional cases. The spontaneous modulation of this superfluid is shown to be directly imaged as the density profiles either by optical absorption or by Stern-Gerlach experiments.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

Robustness evaluation of seismic pile response considering uncertainty mechanism of soil properties

    Get PDF
Robustness analysis of the seismic pile response of a structure–pile–soil system with uncertain soil properties and concrete Young’s modulus is presented in this paper. The bounds of the bending moment of a pile are investigated by means of the previously proposed uncertainty analysis method (Updated Reference-Point method) and the newly developed revised method (NURP method). An efficient finite-element model of a structure–pile–soil system with smart displacement functions for connecting elements is adopted and a response spectrum method is applied in the evaluation of the seismic pile responses of the system. Two cases of soil uncertainties resulting from different uncertainty mechanisms are considered. It is shown that the worst combination of uncertain soil parameters can be determined by the NURP method in an accurate manner

Static behaviour of two-tiered Dou-Gong system reinforced by super-elastic alloy

Dou-Gong system in Asian timber structures play an important role in resisting seismic action. Traditional carpentry in Asia uses timber pegs to connect components which enables relative movement between components, and hence provide friction to dissipate energy in an earthquake. This method however has some short falls such as inadequate stiffness to resist large lateral force and therefore the structures tend to exhibit permanent deformation after the earthquakes. This study proposes a new technique by using super-elastic alloy bars to replace the conventional wooden peg connections to enhance the seismic performance of the structures. Static push-over experiments were conducted on full scaled two-tiered Dou-Gong systems and the high-strength steel and conventional wood pegs as benchmarks. The ultimate stiffness of Dou-Gong system has shown increase by using both high-strength steel and super-elastic alloy bars, but only super-elastic alloy can provide a consistent high damping ratio. This technique also involves pre-strain the super-elastic alloy and the outcomes of this series of experiments have shown that pre-strain in the super-elastic alloy can significantly increase the damping ratio in the structure and hence more energy is dissipated. The results of this paper can be used in the projects of timber structures with Dou-Gong system

Hyperfine Anomaly of Be Isotopes and Anomalous Large Anomaly in 11^{11}Be

A new result of investigations of the hyperfine structure (hfs) anomaly in Be isotopes is presented. The hfs constant for 11^{11}Be is obtained by using the core plus neutron type wave function: 2s12>+1d52×2+;1/2+> |2s_{1\over 2}>+|1d_{5\over2}\times 2^+ ; {1/2}^{+}> . A large hfs anomaly of 11^{11}Be is found, which is mainly due to a large radius of the halo single particle state.Comment: 14 pages, Late

Theory of superconductivity of carbon nanotubes and graphene

We present a new mechanism of carbon nanotube superconductivity that originates from edge states which are specific to graphene. Using on-site and boundary deformation potentials which do not cause bulk superconductivity, we obtain an appreciable transition temperature for the edge state. As a consequence, a metallic zigzag carbon nanotube having open boundaries can be regarded as a natural superconductor/normal metal/superconductor junction system, in which superconducting states are developed locally at both ends of the nanotube and a normal metal exists in the middle. In this case, a signal of the edge state superconductivity appears as the Josephson current which is sensitive to the length of a nanotube and the position of the Fermi energy. Such a dependence distinguishs edge state superconductivity from bulk superconductivity.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figure

Can adenine nucleotides predict primary nonfunction of the human liver homograft?

    Get PDF
Sixty-eight primary liver grafts were analyzed to see whether adenine nucleotides (AN: ATP, ADP, and AMP) or purine catabolites (PC: adenosine, inosine, hypoxanthine, and xanthine) of tissue or effluent can predict primary graft nonfunction. AN, PC, and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, oxidized form (NAD+) of the tissue before (pretransplant) and after graft reperfusion (post-transplant) and of the effluent were analyzed. The graft outcome was classified into two groups (group A: successful, n = 64; group B: primary nonfunctioning, n = 4). No significant differences were observed in pretransplant measurements between groups A and B, whereas ATP, ADP, total AN, total AN + total PC (T) and NAD+, in post-transplant tissues, were significantly higher in group A. Xanthine in the effluent was significantly higher in group B than in group A. ATP, ADP, total AN, T, and NAD+ in post-transplant tissue were significantly associated with primary graft nonfunction by logistic regression analysis

g-factor of a tightly bound electron

We study the hyperfine splitting of an electron in hydrogen-like 209Bi82+^{209}Bi ^{82+} . It is found that the hfs energy splitting can be explained well by considering the g-factor reduction due to the binding effect of a bound electron. We determine for the first time the experimental value of the magnetic moment of a tightly bound electron.Comment: 6 pages, Latex, Phys. Rev. A in pres

Electric Dipole Moments of Neutron-Odd Nuclei

The electric dipole moments (EDMs) of neutron-odd nuclei with even protons are systematically evaluated. We first derive the relation between the EDM and the magnetic moment operators by making use of the core polarization scheme. This relation enables us to calculate the EDM of neutron-odd nuclei without any free parameters. From this calculation, one may find the best atomic system suitable for future EDM experiments.Comment: 4 page
