    Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Scalp after Artificial Hair Implantation

    A 48-year-old man with a protruding tumor on the parietal region had undergone treatment of alopecia using artificial synthetic fibers 2 or 3 times a year for 10 years from 30 to 39 years old. Three months before the first consultation at our hospital, he noticed a small tumor that had gradually shown bleeding and discharge, with expansion of the affected area. A diagnosis of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) was made based on a biopsy, and we resected the tumor with a 1-cm surgical margin from the reddened area around the protruding tumor (14 × 11 cm), including the periosteum membrane. No tight adhesion was found between the periosteum and skull, so we excised the outer table of the skull of the central part (diameter: 8 cm) for a pathological analysis. A pathological study showed moderately differentiated SCC with a negative surgical margin. The whole tumor was surrounded by scar tissue with buried artificial hair implants. The second surgery was performed on the 15th postoperative day. An anterolateral thigh flap was divided into 2 flaps to fit the circle-shaped wound. This is the second report of SCC developing after artificial hair implantation in the frontal-parietal scalp. The whole protruding tumor was surrounded by scar tissue with buried artificial hair implants. Proving the direct causal relationship between inflammation of scar tissue and SCC generation is difficult; however, our pathological findings support the possibility of the harmful effects of artificial hair implants

    Pathological Approach for Surveillance of Ulcerative Colitis-associated cancer:Usefulness of Immunohistochemistry for p53

    The patients with long-standing ulcerative colitis( UC) have a high-risk of neoplastic lesions in the colonicmucosa. The UC-associated neoplastic lesion is difficult to detect by endoscopic examination or diagnosehistologically. In the present study, we aimed to clarify whether immunohistochemistry for p53 is useful todiscriminate the UC-associated neoplasia from inflammed regenerating epithelium. Tissue samples were obtainedfrom colorectomy specimens from 20 patients with long-standing UC (range 6-29 years). The surfaceof microstructure of the tissues was observed by stereomicroscopy, and the sections were examined usingimmunohistochemistry for p53. All of T2-4 carcinomas were detectable by endoscopic examination beforesurgery, whereas considerable number of dysplasias (52.5%), Tis carcinomas (33.3%), and T1 carcinomas(60.0%) were undetectable. Fifty-three of 67 UC-associated neoplastic lesions (79.1%) were of flat-typemacroscopically. The detection rate of flat-type neoplasias( 45.3%) was significantly lower than that of protrudingones (100%). The positivity of p53 overexpression was 0 % in UC-II, 52.5 % in UC-III, and 70.4 %in UC-IV, respectively. UC-II lesions had lower positivity of p53 overexpression than UC-III( P=0.027) or-IV lesions( P=0.003).     A highly hydrophilic water-insoluble nanofiber composite as an efficient and easily-handleable adsorbent for the rapid adsorption of cesium from radioactive wastewater

    Herein, we report a new Prussian blue nanoparticle (PBNPs) incorporated polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) composite nanofiber (c-PBNPs/PVA) for the rapid adsorption of cesium (Cs) from radioactive wastewater. Initially, various electrospinning parameters such as solvent, PVA wt%, PBNPs wt% and glutaraldehyde (GA) wt% were extensively optimized to obtain a better physicochemical property of the c-PBNPs/PVA. In order to improve the water insoluble nature of the PVA, post cross-linking was carried out for the c-PBNPs/PVA using glutaraldehyde (GA) and HCl vapor as the cross-linker and catalyst, respectively. SEM images revealed the smooth and continuous morphology of the c-PBNPs/PVA composite nanofibers with diameters of 200–300 nm and lengths up to several millimeters. TEM images confirmed homogeneous dispersion and good incorporation of PBNPs into the PVA matrix. The amorphous nature of the c-PBNPs/PVA was confirmed by the XRD analysis. FT-IR spectra showed successful cross-linking of PVA with GA. It was found that the prepared composite nanofiber is highly hydrophilic and water-insoluble. The c-PBNPs/PVA showed an excellent and faster Cs adsorption rate of 96% after only 100 min. These results are comparable to those previously reported. After the Cs adsorption test, the c-PBNPs/PVA composite nanofiber can be easily separated from the wastewater.ArticleRSC ADVANCES. 4(103):59571-59578 (2014)journal articl

    症例は57歳,男性。脳硬塞にて入院中であったが,吐血をきたし内視鏡検査を施行した。胃体上部前壁に活動性潰瘍を認めた。潰瘍底は発赤した隆起を形成し心拍動に一致した動揺が認められた。内視鏡治療は断念し緊急手術の予定であったが,多量の出血をきたし手術に至らず出血性ショックで死亡した。剖検にて胃壁の漿膜から横隔膜を貫き心筋まで穿通した胃潰瘍と診断した。生前には心筋障害を示唆する臨床所見はなく,胃潰瘍の心への穿通は診断困難であった。消化性胃潰瘍の心への穿通は稀であり文献的考察を加え報告する。57-year-old man was admitted to our hospital because of cerebral infarction. After admission, he had hematemesis and underwent endoscopic examination. Gastric ulcer with oozing was noted at the anterior wall of the body. The ulcer bed was reddish and protruding with heart beat. Because of the difficulty of endoscopic hemostasis, we planned to perform urgent surgery for the bleeding ulcer. However, he died from hemorrhagic shock before surgery. At autopsy, penetration of gastric ulcer into the myocardium was found. It was difficult to make accurate diagnosis before death because of the lack of ECG findings to indicate myocardial damage.     Ultralight vector dark matter search using data from the KAGRA O3GK run

    Among the various candidates for dark matter (DM), ultralight vector DM can be probed by laser interferometric gravitational wave detectors through the measurement of oscillating length changes in the arm cavities. In this context, KAGRA has a unique feature due to differing compositions of its mirrors, enhancing the signal of vector DM in the length change in the auxiliary channels. Here we present the result of a search for U(1)B−L gauge boson DM using the KAGRA data from auxiliary length channels during the first joint observation run together with GEO600. By applying our search pipeline, which takes into account the stochastic nature of ultralight DM, upper bounds on the coupling strength between the U(1)B−L gauge boson and ordinary matter are obtained for a range of DM masses. While our constraints are less stringent than those derived from previous experiments, this study demonstrates the applicability of our method to the lower-mass vector DM search, which is made difficult in this measurement by the short observation time compared to the auto-correlation time scale of DM
