    Overview and evolution of the LeRC PMAD DC Testbed

    Since the beginning of the Space Station Freedom Program (SSFP), the Lewis Research Center (LeRC) has been developed electrical power system test beds to support the overall design effort. Through this time, the SSFP has changed the design baseline numerous times, however, the test bed effort has endeavored to track these changes. Beginning in August 1989 with the baseline and an all DC system, a test bed was developed to support the design baseline. The LeRC power measurement and distribution (PMAD) DC test bed and the changes in the restructure are described. The changes includeed the size reduction of primary power channel and various power processing elements. A substantial reduction was also made in the amount of flight software with the subsequent migration of these functions to ground control centers. The impact of these changes on the design of the power hardware, the controller algorithms, the control software, and a description of their current status is presented. An overview of the testing using the test bed is described, which includes investigation of stability and source impedance, primary and secondary fault protection, and performance of a rotary utility transfer device. Finally, information is presented on the evolution of the test bed to support the verification and operational phases of the SSFP in light of these restructure scrubs

    Spatial organization of visuomotor reflexes in Drosophila

    In most animals, the visual system plays a central role in locomotor guidance. Here, we examined the functional organization of visuomotor reflexes in the fruit fly, Drosophila, using an electronic flight simulator. Flies exhibit powerful avoidance responses to visual expansion centered laterally. The amplitude of these expansion responses is three times larger than those generated by image rotation. Avoidance of a laterally positioned focus of expansion emerges from an inversion of the optomotor response when motion is restricted to the rear visual hemisphere. Furthermore, motion restricted to rear quarter-fields elicits turning responses that are independent of the direction of image motion about the animal's yaw axis. The spatial heterogeneity of visuomotor responses explains a seemingly peculiar behavior in which flies robustly fixate the contracting pole of a translating flow field

    Since the beginning of the Space Station Freedom Program (SSFP), the Lewis Research Center (LeRC) and the Rocketdyne Division of Rockwell International have had extensive efforts underway to develop test beds to support the definition of the detailed electrical power system design. Because of the extensive redirections that have taken place in the Space Station Freedom Program in the past several years, the test bed effort was forced to accommodate a large number of changes. A short history of these program changes and their impact on the LeRC test beds is presented to understand how the current test bed configuration has evolved. The current test objectives and the development approach for the current DC Test Bed are discussed. A description of the test bed configuration, along with its power and controller hardware and its software components, is presented. Next, the uses of the test bed during the mature design and verification phase of SSFP are examined. Finally, the uses of the test bed in operation and evolution of the SSF are addressed

    Additional Studies of the Cenozoic of Western Kansas

    Subsurface data, obtained largely from ground-water test drilling, are utilized for the preparation of generalized areal geology and topography on the bedrock surface below the Cenozoic deposits of western Kansas. The geologic pattern is consistent with the regional pattern of areal geology shown on the State map of Kansas. The sub-Cenozoic topography reveals a recognizable pattern of bedrock valleys, developed in part during late Tertiary time and in part during Pleistocene time. Structure contours drawn on the "Algal limestone" at the top of the Ogallala formation are compared with structure contours drawn on the top of the Dakota formation. The Tertiary structural development of western Kansas is indicated by a map showing convergence between the Dakota and Ogallala formations

    In order to investigate the application of resistivity methods to groundwater studies in eastern Kansas, electrical resistivity depth profiles were run in the Kansas River Valley at localities where geologic conditions were known. The results of this survey show that the depth to water table and bedrock can be determined in the Kansas River Valley. To a less certain degree interpretations can also be made concerning lithology and type of water contained in the alluvial sediments

    The redshift of the gravitationally lensed radio source PKS1830-211

    We report on the spectroscopic identification and the long awaited redshift measurement of the heavily obscured, gravitationally lensed radio source PKS 1830-211, which was first observed as a radio Einstein ring. The NE component of the doubly imaged core is identified, in our infrared spectrum covering the wavelength range 1.5-2.5 microns, as an impressively reddened quasar at z=2.507. Our redshift measurement, together with the recently measured time delay (Lovell et al.), means that we are a step closer to determining the Hubble constant from this lens. Converting the time delay into the Hubble constant by using existing models leads to high values for the Hubble constant. Since the lensing galaxy lies very close to the center of the lensed ring, improving the error bars on the Hubble constant will require not only a more precise time delay measurement, but also very precise astrometry of the whole system.Comment: 11 pages, 2 figures, Accepted ApJ
