Quantum rotation of ortho and para-water encapsulated in a fullerene cage

    No full text
Inelastic neutron scattering, far-infrared spectroscopy, and cryogenic nuclear magnetic resonance are used to investigate the quantized rotation and ortho–para conversion of single water molecules trapped inside closed fullerene cages. The existence of metastable ortho-water molecules is demonstrated, and the interconversion of ortho-and para-water spin isomers is tracked in real time. Our investigation reveals that the ground state of encapsulated ortho water has a lifted degeneracy, associated with symmetry-breaking of the water environmen

Progressive Molding for Underwater Soft Robots

Coral reefs, which house a quarter of the ocean’s biodiversity, are under threat due to plastic waste. Underwater remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) equipped with a gripper can be used to collect macroplastics caught in the reefs. Due to the frail nature of coral, these expeditions require sensitive manipulation; grippers made from soft rubbers and plastics allow for manipulation with minimal risk to the surrounding environment. However, fabrication of these grippers is often complex, time-consuming, and necessitates manual labor. We present a novel fabrication technique - progressive molding - to streamline the process of creating soft gripper components. By using this method, we can create complex shapes that cannot be made in a single cycle of replica molding. Additionally, the process uses materials that are too soft to be FDM 3D printed with standard machines. We designed a soft gripper with actuators that could be fabricated via progressive molding. Finally, we attached the gripper to a four degree-of-freedom robotic arm on a commercially available ROV to remotely clean coral reef systems

Living with Fracking: Women’s Narratives from Zharrëz, Albania

Zharrëz, Albania is home to Europe’s largest onshore oil field. After 67 years of conventional oil drilling, hydraulic fracturing (fracking) is now used in the oil field. The goal of our project was to document women’s experiences with fracking in Zharrëz and produce media and other deliverables to amplify the perspectives of underrepresented people in disaster risk management (DRM). We visited oil wells in fracking zones, speaking with residents about air, water, and soil pollution from oil extraction. We interviewed 20 women and 7 men and conducted participatory activities related to life in fracking zones. We applied 4 theoretical frameworks to understand these experiences. We recommend DRM projects incorporate narrative elicitation activities in future risk assessments

Reversible Diels–Alder Addition to Fullerenes: A Study of Dimethylanthracene with H2@C60

The study of isolated atoms or molecules inside a fullerene cavity provides a unique environment. It is likely to control the outer carbon cage and study the isolated species when molecules or atoms are trapped inside a fullerene. We report the Diels–Alder addition reaction of 9,10-dimethyl anthracene (DMA) to H2@C60 while 1H NMR spectroscopy is utilized to characterize the Diels–Alder reaction of the DMA with the fullerene. Through 1H NMR spectroscopy, a series of isomeric adducts are identified. The obtained peaks are sharp, precise, and straightforward. Moreover, in this paper, H2@C60 and its isomers are described for the first time
