DebIE: A Platform for Implicit and Explicit Debiasing of Word Embedding Spaces
Recent research efforts in NLP have demonstrated that distributional word
vector spaces often encode stereotypical human biases, such as racism and
sexism. With word representations ubiquitously used in NLP models and
pipelines, this raises ethical issues and jeopardizes the fairness of language
technologies. While there exists a large body of work on bias measures and
debiasing methods, to date, there is no platform that would unify these
research efforts and make bias measuring and debiasing of representation spaces
widely accessible. In this work, we present DebIE, the first integrated
platform for (1) measuring and (2) mitigating bias in word embeddings. Given an
(i) embedding space (users can choose between the predefined spaces or upload
their own) and (ii) a bias specification (users can choose between existing
bias specifications or create their own), DebIE can (1) compute several
measures of implicit and explicit bias and modify the embedding space by
executing two (mutually composable) debiasing models. DebIE's functionality can
be accessed through four different interfaces: (a) a web application, (b) a
desktop application, (c) a REST-ful API, and (d) as a command-line application.

Linking Diversity and Mental Health: Task Conflict Mediates Between Perceived Subgroups and Emotional Exhaustion.
Diversity and psychological health issues at the workplace are pressing issues in today's organizations. However, research linking two fields is scant. To bridge this gap, drawing from team faultline research, social categorization theory, and the job-demands resources model, we propose that perceiving one's team as fragmented into subgroups increases strain. We further argue that this relationship is mediated by task conflict and relationship conflict and that it is moderated by psychological empowerment and task interdependence. Multilevel structural equation models on a two-wave sample consisting of 536 participants from 107 work teams across various industries and work contexts partially supported the hypotheses: task conflict did indeed mediate the positive relationships between perceived subgroups and emotional exhaustion while relationship conflict did not; effects on stress symptoms were absent. Moreover, contrary to our expectations, neither empowerment, nor task interdependence moderated the mediation. Results indicate that team diversity can constitute a job demand that can affect psychological health. Focusing on the mediating role of task conflict, we offer a preliminary process model to guide future research at the crossroads of diversity and psychological health at work
Biophysical Characterization of (Silica-coated) Cobalt Ferrite Nanoparticles for Hyperthermia Treatment
Magnetic hyperthermia is a technique that describes the heating of material through an external magnetic field. Classic hyperthermia is a medical condition where the human body overheats, being usually triggered by a heat stroke, which can lead to severe damage to organs and tissue due to the denaturation of cells. In modern medicine, hyperthermia can be deliberately induced to specified parts of the body to destroy malignant cells. Magnetic hyperthermia describes the way that this overheating is induced and it has the inherent advantage of being a minimal invasive method when compared to traditional surgery methods. This work presents a particle system that offers huge potential for hyperthermia treatments, given its good loss value, i.e., the particles dissipate a lot of heat to their surroundings when treated with an ac magnetic field. The measurements were performed in a low-cost custom hyperthermia setup. Additional toxicity assessments on Jurkat cells show a very low short-term toxicity on the particles and a moderate low toxicity after two days due to the prevalent health concerns towards nanoparticles in organisms

Myocardial aging as a T-cell–mediated phenomenon
In recent years, the myocardium has been rediscovered under the lenses of immunology, and lymphocytes have been implicated in the pathogenesis of cardiomyopathies with different etiologies. Aging is an important risk factor for heart diseases, and it also has impact on the immune system. Thus, we sought to determine whether immunological activity would influence myocardial structure and function in elderly mice. Morphological, functional, and molecular analyses revealed that the age-related myocardial impairment occurs in parallel with shifts in the composition of tissue-resident leukocytes and with an accumulation of activated CD4+ Foxp3- (forkhead box P3) IFN-γ+ T cells in the heart-draining lymph nodes. A comprehensive characterization of different aged immune-deficient mouse strains revealed that T cells significantly contribute to age-related myocardial inflammation and functional decline. Upon adoptive cell transfer, the T cells isolated from the mediastinal lymph node (med-LN) of aged animals exhibited increased cardiotropism, compared with cells purified from young donors or from other irrelevant sites. Nevertheless, these cells caused rather mild effects on cardiac functionality, indicating that myocardial aging might stem from a combination of intrinsic and extrinsic (immunological) factors. Taken together, the data herein presented indicate that heart-directed immune responses may spontaneously arise in the elderly, even in the absence of a clear tissue damage or concomitant infection. These observations might shed new light on the emerging role of T cells in myocardial diseases, which primarily affect the elderly population.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Fluorescent single-molecule STM probe
The plasmonic tip of a scanning tunnelling microscope (STM) is functionalized
with a single fluorescent molecule and is scanned on a plasmonic substrate. The
tunneling current flowing through the tip-molecule-substrate junction generates
a narrow-line emission of light corresponding to the fluorescence of the
negatively charged molecule suspended at the apex of the tip, i.e., the
emission of the excited molecular anion (trion). The fluorescence of this
molecular probe is recorded for tip-substrate nanocavities featuring different
plasmonic resonances, for different tip-substrate distances and applied bias
voltages, and on different substrates. We demonstrate that the width of the
emission peak can be used as a probe of the trion-plasmon coupling strength and
that the energy of the emitted photons is governed by the molecule interactions
with its electrostatic environment. Additionally, we theoretically elucidate
why the direct contact of the suspended molecule with the metallic tip does not
totally quench the radiative emission of the molecule.Comment: 9 pages in the main manuscript, including 4 figures, 11 pages in the
