A Novel Culture-Dependent Gesture Selection System for a Humanoid Robot Performing Greeting Interaction
In human-robot interaction, it is important for the robots to adapt to
our ways of communication. As humans, rules of non-verbal communication,
including greetings, change depending on our culture. Social robots should
adapt to these specific differences in order to communicate effectively, as a correct
way of approaching often results into better acceptance of the robot. In this
study, a novel greeting gesture selection system is presented and an experiment
is run using the robot ARMAR-IIIb. The robot performs greeting gestures appropriate
to Japanese culture; after interacting with German participants, the selection
should become appropriate to German culture. Results show that the
mapping of gesture selection evolves successfully
Running Backwards: Consequences of Current HIV Incidence Rates for the Next Generation of Black MSM in the United States
Black men who have sex with men (MSM) in the United States are disproportionately impacted by HIV. To better understand this public health problem, we reviewed the literature to calculate an estimate of HIV incidence among Black MSM. We used this rate to model HIV prevalence over time within a simulated cohort, which we subsequently compared to prevalence from community-based samples. We searched all databases accessible through PubMed, and Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections abstracts for HIV incidence estimates among Black MSM. Summary HIV incidence rates and 95 % confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated using random effects models. Using the average incidence rate, we modeled HIV prevalence within a simulated cohort of Black MSM (who were all HIV-negative at the start) from ages 18 through 40. Based on five incidence rates totaling 2898 Black MSM, the weighted mean incidence was 4.16 % per year (95 % CI 2.76–5.56). Using this annual incidence rate, our model predicted that 39.94 % of Black MSM within the simulated cohort would be HIV-positive by age 30, and 60.73 % by 40. Projections were similar to HIV prevalence found in community-based samples of Black MSM. High HIV prevalence will persist across the life-course among Black MSM, unless effective prevention and treatment efforts are increased to substantially reduce HIV transmission among this underserved and marginalized population
A synthetic biology approach to probing nucleosome symmetry
The repeating subunit of chromatin, the nucleosome, includes two copies of each of the four core histones, and several recent studies have reported that asymmetrically-modified nucleosomes occur at regulatory elements in vivo. To probe the mechanisms by which histone modifications are read out, we designed an obligate pair of H3 heterodimers, termed H3X and H3Y, which we extensively validated genetically and biochemically. Comparing the effects of asymmetric histone tail point mutants with those of symmetric double mutants revealed that a single methylated H3K36 per nucleosome was sufficient to silence cryptic transcription in vivo. We also demonstrate the utility of this system for analysis of histone modification crosstalk, using mass spectrometry to separately identify modifications on each H3 molecule within asymmetric nucleosomes. The ability to generate asymmetric nucleosomes in vivo and in vitro provides a powerful and generalizable tool to probe the mechanisms by which H3 tails are read out by effector proteins in the cell
An Experimental Investigation of Colonel Blotto Games
"This article examines behavior in the two-player, constant-sum Colonel Blotto game with asymmetric resources in which players maximize the expected number of battlefields won. The experimental results support all major theoretical predictions. In the auction treatment, where winning a battlefield is deterministic, disadvantaged players use a 'guerilla warfare' strategy which stochastically allocates zero resources to a subset of battlefields. Advantaged players employ a 'stochastic complete coverage' strategy, allocating random, but positive, resource levels across the battlefields. In the lottery treatment, where winning a battlefield is probabilistic, both players divide their resources equally across all battlefields." Superscaling of Inclusive Electron Scattering from Nuclei
We investigate the degree to which the concept of superscaling, initially
developed within the framework of the relativistic Fermi gas model, applies to
inclusive electron scattering from nuclei. We find that data obtained from the
low energy loss side of the quasielastic peak exhibit the superscaling
property, i.e., the scaling functions f(\psi') are not only independent of
momentum transfer (the usual type of scaling: scaling of the first kind), but
coincide for A \geq 4 when plotted versus a dimensionless scaling variable
\psi' (scaling of the second kind). We use this behavior to study as yet poorly

Clinical and laboratory variability in a cohort of patients diagnosed with type 1 VWD in the United States
Von Willebrand disease (VWD) is the most common inherited bleeding disorder, and type 1
VWD is the most common VWD variant. Despite its frequency, diagnosis of type 1 VWD
remains the subject of much debate. In order to study the spectrum of type 1 VWD in the United
States, the Zimmerman Program enrolled 482 subjects with a previous diagnosis of type 1 VWD
without stringent laboratory diagnostic criteria. VWF laboratory testing and full length VWF
gene sequencing were performed for all index cases and healthy control subjects in a central
laboratory. Bleeding phenotype was characterized using the ISTH Bleeding Assessment Tool.
At study entry, 64% of subjects had VWF:Ag or VWF:RCo below the lower limit of normal,
while 36% had normal VWF levels. VWF sequence variations were most frequent in subjects
with VWF:Ag < 30 IU/dL (82%) while subjects with type 1 VWD and VWF:Ag ≥ 30 IU/dL had
an intermediate frequency of variants (44%). Subjects whose VWF testing was normal at study
entry had a similar rate of sequence variations as the healthy controls at 14% of subjects. All
subjects with severe type 1 VWD and VWF:Ag ≤ 5 IU/dL had an abnormal bleeding score, but
otherwise bleeding score did not correlate with VWF:Ag level. Subjects with a historical
diagnosis of type 1 VWD had similar rates of abnormal bleeding scores compared to subjects
with low VWF levels at study entry. Type 1 VWD in the United States is highly variable, and
bleeding symptoms are frequent in this population
Changing practices: The specialised domestic violence court process
Specialised domestic violence courts, initially developed in the United States of America, have been recognised by other jurisdictions including Canada, Australia and the United Kingdom. This article presents a case study of K Court in Toronto, drawing upon documentary evidence, direct observations and interviews with key informants. It is argued that the specialised domestic violence court process includes changing practices of some of the key stakeholders. Learning lessons from abroad can offer jurisdictions insights that can steer implementation of appropriate practices in the field
