Flap-lag dynamics of hingeless helicopter blades at moderate and high advance ratios
Equations for large amplitude coupled flaplag motion of a hingeless elastic helicopter blade in forward flight are derived. Only a torsionally rigid blade exicted by quasi-steady aerodynamic loads is considered. The effects of reversed flow together with some new terms due to forward flight are included. Using Galerkin's method the spatial dependence is eliminated and the equations are linearized about a suitable equilibrium position. The resulting system of equations is solved using multivariable Floquet-Liapunov theory, and the transition matrix at the end of the period is evaluated by two separate methods. Results illustrating the effects of forward flight and various important blade parameters on the stability boundaries are presented

A review of congenital heart block
Congenital heart block is a rare disorder. It has an incidence of about 1 in 22,000 live
births. It may be associated with high mortality and morbidity. This should generate a
high index of suspicion for early diagnosis and aggressive therapy when appropriate.
The congenital heart block associated with neonatal lupus is considered a form of
passively acquired autoimmune disease in which maternal autoantibodies to the
intracellular ribonucleoproteins Ro (SS-A) and La (SS-B), cross the placenta and
injure the previously normal fetal heart. Women with serum titers of anti-Ro antibody
carry a 3% risk of having a child with neonatal lupus syndrome. Recurrence rates are
about 18%. We believe that serial echocardiograms should be acquired so that early
diagnosis is made and aggressive therapy administered, if signs of conduction
system disease such as PR interval prolongation by Doppler are found, so as to
optimize the outcome. Establishment of guidelines for therapy have been set
empirically, should signs of congenital heart block develop. Those patients whose
congenital heart block is associated with structural heart disease have a higher
morbidity and mortality, which is determined more by the underlying structural
congenital heart disease than it is by the need for a pacemaker per se.peer-reviewe
Quantum Lattice Fluctuations and Luminescence in C_60
We consider luminescence in photo-excited neutral C_60 using the
Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model applied to a single C_60 molecule. To calculate the
luminescence we use a collective coordinate method where our collective
coordinate resembles the displacement of the carbon atoms of the Hg(8) phonon
mode and extrapolates between the ground state "dimerisation" and the exciton
polaron. There is good agreement for the existing luminescence peak spacing and
fair agreement for the relative intensity. We predict the existence of further
peaks not yet resolved in experiment. PACS Numbers : 78.65.Hc, 74.70.Kn,

Asymmetric Totally-corrective Boosting for Real-time Object Detection
Real-time object detection is one of the core problems in computer vision.
The cascade boosting framework proposed by Viola and Jones has become the
standard for this problem. In this framework, the learning goal for each node
is asymmetric, which is required to achieve a high detection rate and a
moderate false positive rate. We develop new boosting algorithms to address
this asymmetric learning problem. We show that our methods explicitly optimize
asymmetric loss objectives in a totally corrective fashion. The methods are
totally corrective in the sense that the coefficients of all selected weak
classifiers are updated at each iteration. In contract, conventional boosting
like AdaBoost is stage-wise in that only the current weak classifier's
coefficient is updated. At the heart of the totally corrective boosting is the
column generation technique. Experiments on face detection show that our
methods outperform the state-of-the-art asymmetric boosting methods.Comment: 14 pages, published in Asian Conf. Computer Vision 201
Combinatorial Games with a Pass: A dynamical systems approach
By treating combinatorial games as dynamical systems, we are able to address
a longstanding open question in combinatorial game theory, namely, how the
introduction of a "pass" move into a game affects its behavior. We consider two
well known combinatorial games, 3-pile Nim and 3-row Chomp. In the case of Nim,
we observe that the introduction of the pass dramatically alters the game's
underlying structure, rendering it considerably more complex, while for Chomp,
the pass move is found to have relatively minimal impact. We show how these
results can be understood by recasting these games as dynamical systems
describable by dynamical recursion relations. From these recursion relations we
are able to identify underlying structural connections between these "games
with passes" and a recently introduced class of "generic (perturbed) games."
This connection, together with a (non-rigorous) numerical stability analysis,
allows one to understand and predict the effect of a pass on a game.Comment: 39 pages, 13 figures, published versio
Covariant Uniform Acceleration
We show that standard Relativistic Dynamics Equation F=dp/d\tau is only
partially covariant. To achieve full Lorentz covariance, we replace the
four-force F by a rank 2 antisymmetric tensor acting on the four-velocity. By
taking this tensor to be constant, we obtain a covariant definition of
uniformly accelerated motion. We compute explicit solutions for uniformly
accelerated motion which are divided into four types: null, linear, rotational,
and general. For null acceleration, the worldline is cubic in the time. Linear
acceleration covariantly extends 1D hyperbolic motion, while rotational
acceleration covariantly extends pure rotational motion.
We use Generalized Fermi-Walker transport to construct a uniformly
accelerated family of inertial frames which are instantaneously comoving to a
uniformly accelerated observer. We explain the connection between our approach
and that of Mashhoon. We show that our solutions of uniformly accelerated
motion have constant acceleration in the comoving frame. Assuming the Weak
Hypothesis of Locality, we obtain local spacetime transformations from a
uniformly accelerated frame K' to an inertial frame K. The spacetime
transformations between two uniformly accelerated frames with the same
acceleration are Lorentz. We compute the metric at an arbitrary point of a
uniformly accelerated frame.
We obtain velocity and acceleration transformations from a uniformly
accelerated system K' to an inertial frame K. We derive the general formula for
the time dilation between accelerated clocks. We obtain a formula for the
angular velocity of a uniformly accelerated object. Every rest point of K' is
uniformly accelerated, and its acceleration is a function of the observer's
acceleration and its position. We obtain an interpretation of the
Lorentz-Abraham-Dirac equation as an acceleration transformation from K' to K.Comment: 36 page
