    A comparison of the Bering Sea, Gulf of Alaska, and Aleutian Islands large marine ecosystems through food web modeling / by K. Aydin ... [et al.]

    Detailed mass balance food web models were constructed to compare ecosystem characteristics for three Alaska regions: the eastern Bering Sea (EBS), the Gulf of Alaska (GOA), and the Aleutian Islands (AI). This paper documents the methods and data used to construct the models and compares ecosystem structure and indicators across models. The common modeling framework, including biomass pool and fishery definitions, resulted in comparable food webs for the three ecosystems which showed that they all have the same apex predator—the Pacific halibut longline fishery. However, despite the similar methods used to construct the models, the data from each system included in the analysis clearly define differences in food web structure which may be important considerations for fishery management in Alaska ecosystems. The results showed that the EBS ecosystem has a much larger benthic influence in its food web than either the GOA or the AI. Conversely, the AI ecosystem has the strongest pelagic influence in its food web relative to the other two systems. The GOA ecosystem appears balanced between benthic and pelagic pathways, but is notable in having a smaller fisheries catch relative to the other two systems, and a high biomass of fish predators above trophic level (TL) 4, arrowtooth flounder and halibut. The patterns visible in aggregated food webs were confirmed in additional more detailed analyses of biomass and consumption in each ecosystem, using both the single species and whole ecosystem indicators developed here

    Positive mRNA Translational Control in Germ Cells by Initiation Factor Selectivity

    Ultimately, the production of new proteins in undetermined cells pushes them to new fates. Other proteins hold a stem cell in a mode of self-renewal. In germ cells, these decision-making proteins are produced largely from translational control of preexisting mRNAs. To date, all of the regulation has been attributed to RNA binding proteins (RBPs) that repress mRNAs in many models of germ cell development (Drosophila, mouse, C. elegans, and Xenopus). In this review, we focus on the selective, positive function of translation initiation factors eIF4E and eIF4G, which recruit mRNAs to ribosomes upon derepression. Evidence now shows that the two events are not separate but rather are coordinated through composite complexes of repressors and germ cell isoforms of eIF4 factors. Strikingly, the initiation factor isoforms are themselves mRNA selective. The mRNP complexes of translation factors and RBPs are built on specific populations of mRNAs to prime them for subsequent translation initiation. Simple rearrangement of the partners causes a dormant mRNP to become synthetically active in germ cells when and where they are required to support gametogenesis

    Designated Pilot Examiner’s Perception of Private Pilot Certification in General Aviation Advanced Technology Cockpits

    All aircraft require some degree of instrumentation. With the explosion of computer and flat panel display technology, the “glass cockpit” has entered aviation. In the past, pilots transitioned into the new technology after years of flight experience. These pilots already understood: the regulations, principals of flight, navigation, and the performance characteristics of their aircraft. The new glass equipped cockpits are now entering the environment of primary flight training where pilots are still learning the basics. Additionally, there is no structured or generally accepted methodology for training in advanced cockpits. The FAA has not established specific new guidelines for pilot-in-command for these aircraft nor much guidance to Flight Examiners (FEs) that must perform the actual certification of new pilots. The basic research question being explored is whether Designated Flight Examiners perceive whether the current FAA certification process is adequate for a private pilot to safely operate advanced technology in GA aircraft

    Lady Gaga as (dis)simulacrum of monstrosity

    Lady Gaga’s celebrity DNA revolves around the notion of monstrosity, an extensively researched concept in postmodern cultural studies. The analysis that is offered in this paper is largely informed by Deleuze and Guattari’s notion of monstrosity, as well as by their approach to the study of sign-systems that was deployed in A Thousand Plateaus. By drawing on biographical and archival visual data, with a focus on the relatively underexplored live show, an elucidation is afforded of what is really monstrous about Lady Gaga. The main argument put forward is that monstrosity as sign seeks to appropriate the horizon of unlimited semiosis as radical alterity and openness to signifying possibilities. In this context it is held that Gaga effectively delimits her unique semioscape; however, any claims to monstrosity are undercut by the inherent limits of a representationalist approach in sufficiently engulfing this concept. Gaga is monstrous for her community insofar as she demands of her fans to project their semiosic horizon onto her as a simulacrum of infinite semiosis. However, this simulacrum may only be evinced in a feigned manner as a (dis)simulacrum. The analysis of imagery from seminal live shows during 2011–2012 shows that Gaga’s presumed monstrosity is more akin to hyperdifferentiation as simultaneous employment of heterogeneous and potentially dissonant inter pares cultural representations. The article concludes with a problematisation of audience effects in the light of Gaga’s adoption of a schematic and post-representationalist strategy in the event of her strategy’s emulation by competitive artists

    Mobile Open Systems Technologies For The Utilities Industries

    This chapter considers the provision of mobile computing support for field engineers in the electricity industry. Section 11.2 describes field engineers current working practices and from these derives a set of general requirements for a mobile computing environment to support utilities workers. A key requirement which is identified is the need for field engineers to access real-time multimedia information in the field and it is on this requirement that the remainder of the chapter focuses. Sections 11.3 and 11.4 present a survey of enabling technologies to support distributed systems operating in both local and wide area wireless environments. The impact of these technologies on the provision of mobile computing support is assessed in section 11.5. Section 11.6 describes a software architecture which attempts to address the requirements highlighted in section 11.2 and in particular is designed to support real-time access to data in the field. Finally, section 11.7 considers the degree to which utilities workers requirements can be met by the surveyed technologies and considers the likely impact of remote data access on field engineers working practices
