Boundary Friction on Molecular Lubricants: Rolling Mode?

    Get PDF
A theoretical model is proposed for low temperature friction between two smooth rigid solid surfaces separated by lubricant molecules, admitting their deformations and rotations. Appearance of different modes of energy dissipation (by ''rocking'' or ''rolling'' of lubricants) at slow relative displacement of the surfaces is shown to be accompanied by the stick-and-slip features and reveals a non-monotonic (mean) friction force {\it vs} external loadComment: revtex4, 4 pages, 5 figure

The Integrals of Motion for the Deformed W-Algebra Wqt(slN)W_{qt}(sl_N^) II: Proof of the commutation relations

We explicitly construct two classes of infinitly many commutative operators in terms of the deformed W-algebra Wqt(slN)W_{qt}(sl_N^), and give proofs of the commutation relations of these operators. We call one of them local integrals of motion and the other nonlocal one, since they can be regarded as elliptic deformation of local and nonlocal integrals of motion for the WNW_N algebra.Comment: Dedicated to Professor Tetsuji Miwa on the occasion on the 60th birthda

Effect of transient pinning on stability of drops sitting on an inclined plane

    Get PDF
We report on new instabilities of the quasi-static equilibrium of water drops pinned by a hydrophobic inclined substrate. The contact line of a statically pinned drop exhibits three transitions of partial depinning: depinning of the advancing and receding parts of the contact line and depinning of the entire contact line leading to the drop's translational motion. We find a region of parameters where the classical Macdougall-Ockrent-Frenkel approach fails to estimate the critical volume of the statically pinned inclined drop

Formation of the internal structure of solids under severe action

On the example of a particular problem, the theory of vacancies, a new form of kinetic equations symmetrically incorporation the internal and free energies has been derived. The dynamical nature of irreversible phenomena at formation and motion of defects (dislocations) has been analyzed by a computer experiment. The obtained particular results are extended into a thermodynamic identity involving the law of conservation of energy at interaction with an environment (the 1st law of thermodynamics) and the law of energy transformation into internal degree of freedom (relaxation). The identity is compared with the analogous Jarzynski identity. The approach is illustrated by simulation of processes during severe plastic deformation, the Rybin kinetic equation for this case has been derived.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figure

Dynamical differential equations compatible with rational qKZ equations

For the Lie algebra glNgl_N we introduce a system of differential operators called the dynamical operators. We prove that the dynamical differential operators commute with the glNgl_N rational quantized Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov difference operators. We describe the transformations of the dynamical operators under the natural action of the glNgl_N Weyl group.Comment: 7 pages, AmsLaTe

Lie superalgebras and irreducibility of A_1^(1)-modules at the critical level

We introduce the infinite-dimensional Lie superalgebra A{\mathcal A} and construct a family of mappings from certain category of A{\mathcal A}-modules to the category of A_1^(1)-modules of critical level. Using this approach, we prove the irreducibility of a family of A_1^(1)-modules at the critical level. As a consequence, we present a new proof of irreducibility of certain Wakimoto modules. We also give a natural realizations of irreducible quotients of relaxed Verma modules and calculate characters of these representations.Comment: 21 pages, Late

    W_{1+\infty} and W(gl_N) with central charge N

We study representations of the central extension of the Lie algebra of differential operators on the circle, the W-infinity algebra. We obtain complete and specialized character formulas for a large class of representations, which we call primitive; these include all quasi-finite irreducible unitary representations. We show that any primitive representation with central charge N has a canonical structure of an irreducible representation of the W-algebra W(gl_N) with the same central charge and that all irreducible representations of W(gl_N) with central charge N arise in this way. We also establish a duality between "integral" modules of W(gl_N) and finite-dimensional irreducible modules of gl_N, and conjecture their fusion rules.Comment: 29 pages, Latex, uses file amssym.def (a few remarks added, typos corrected

Nonlinear dynamics of large amplitude dust acoustic shocks and solitary pulses in dusty plasmas

    Get PDF
We present a fully nonlinear theory for dust acoustic (DA) shocks and DA solitary pulses in a strongly coupled dusty plasma, which have been recently observed experimentally by Heinrich et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 103, 115002 (2009)], Teng et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 103, 245005 (2009)], and Bandyopadhyay et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 101, 065006 (2008)]. For this purpose, we use a generalized hydrodynamic model for the strongly coupled dust grains, accounting for arbitrary large amplitude dust number density compressions and potential distributions associated with fully nonlinear nonstationary DA waves. Time-dependent numerical solutions of our nonlinear model compare favorably well with the recent experimental works (mentioned above) that have reported the formation of large amplitude non-stationary DA shocks and DA solitary pulses in low-temperature dusty plasma discharges.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures. Difference L operators related to q-characters

We introduce a factorized difference operator L(u) annihilated by the Frenkel-Reshetikhin screening operator for the quantum affine algebra U_q(C^{(1)}_n). We identify the coefficients of L(u) with the fundamental q-characters, and establish a number of formulas for their higher analogues. They include Jacobi-Trudi and Weyl type formulas, canceling tableau sums, Casorati determinant solution to the T-system, and so forth. Analogous operators for the orthogonal series U_q(B^{(1)}_n) and U_q(D^{(1)}_n) are also presented.Comment: 25 pages, LaTeX2e, no figur
