    Estimating solar radiation for plant simulation models

    Five algorithms producing daily solar radiation surrogates using daily temperatures and rainfall were evaluated using measured solar radiation data for seven U.S. locations. The algorithms were compared both in terms of accuracy of daily solar radiation estimates and terms of response when used in a plant growth simulation model (CERES-wheat). Requirements for accuracy of solar radiation for plant growth simulation models are discussed. One algorithm is recommended as being best suited for use in these models when neither measured nor satellite estimated solar radiation values are available

    Evaluation of Thompson-type trend and monthly weather data models for corn yields in Iowa, Illinois, and Indiana

    An evaluation was made of Thompson-Type models which use trend terms (as a surrogate for technology), meteorological variables based on monthly average temperature, and total precipitation to forecast and estimate corn yields in Iowa, Illinois, and Indiana. Pooled and unpooled Thompson-type models were compared. Neither was found to be consistently superior to the other. Yield reliability indicators show that the models are of limited use for large area yield estimation. The models are objective and consistent with scientific knowledge. Timely yield forecasts and estimates can be made during the growing season by using normals or long range weather forecasts. The models are not costly to operate and are easy to use and understand. The model standard errors of prediction do not provide a useful current measure of modeled yield reliability

    Evaluation of the CEAS trend and monthly weather data models for soybean yields in Iowa, Illinois, and Indiana

    The CEAS models evaluated use historic trend and meteorological and agroclimatic variables to forecast soybean yields in Iowa, Illinois, and Indiana. Indicators of yield reliability and current measures of modeled yield reliability were obtained from bootstrap tests on the end of season models. Indicators of yield reliability show that the state models are consistently better than the crop reporting district (CRD) models. One CRD model is especially poor. At the state level, the bias of each model is less than one half quintal/hectare. The standard deviation is between one and two quintals/hectare. The models are adequate in terms of coverage and are to a certain extent consistent with scientific knowledge. Timely yield estimates can be made during the growing season using truncated models. The models are easy to understand and use and are not costly to operate. Other than the specification of values used to determine evapotranspiration, the models are objective. Because the method of variable selection used in the model development is adequately documented, no evaluation can be made of the objectivity and cost of redevelopment of the model

    Regularities with random interactions in energy centroids defined by group symmetries

    Regular structures generated by random interactions in energy centroids defined over irreducible representations (irreps) of some of the group symmetries of the interacting boson models sdsdIBM, sdgsdgIBM, sdsdIBM-TT and sdsdIBM-STST are studied by deriving trace propagations equations for the centroids. It is found that, with random interactions, the lowest and highest group irreps in general carry most of the probability for the corresponding centroids to be lowest in energy. This generalizes the result known earlier, via numerical diagonalization, for the more complicated fixed spin (JJ) centroids where simple trace propagation is not possible.Comment: 18 pages, 3 figure

    Statistical Theory of Finite Fermi-Systems Based on the Structure of Chaotic Eigenstates

    The approach is developed for the description of isolated Fermi-systems with finite number of particles, such as complex atoms, nuclei, atomic clusters etc. It is based on statistical properties of chaotic excited states which are formed by the interaction between particles. New type of ``microcanonical'' partition function is introduced and expressed in terms of the average shape of eigenstates F(Ek,E)F(E_k,E) where EE is the total energy of the system. This partition function plays the same role as the canonical expression exp(E(i)/T)exp(-E^{(i)}/T) for open systems in thermal bath. The approach allows to calculate mean values and non-diagonal matrix elements of different operators. In particular, the following problems have been considered: distribution of occupation numbers and its relevance to the canonical and Fermi-Dirac distributions; criteria of equilibrium and thermalization; thermodynamical equation of state and the meaning of temperature, entropy and heat capacity, increase of effective temperature due to the interaction.     Which outcome expectancies are important in determining young adults intentions to use condoms with casual sexual partners?: A cross-sectional study

    Background: The prevalence of unwanted pregnancy and sexually transmitted infection amongst young adults represents an important public health problem in the UK. Individuals attitude towards the use of condoms has been identified as an important determinant of behavioural intentions and action. The Theory of Planned Behaviour has been widely used to explain and predict health behaviour. This posits that the degree to which an individual positively or negatively values a behaviour (termed direct attitude) is based upon consideration of the likelihood of a number of outcomes occurring (outcome expectancy) weighted by the perceived desirability of those outcomes (outcome evaluation). Outcome expectancy and outcome evaluation when multiplied form indirect attitude. The study aimed to assess whether positive outcome expectancies of unprotected sex were more important for young adults with lower safe sex intentions, than those with safer sex intentions, and to isolate optimal outcomes for targeting through health promotion campaigns. Methods: A cross-sectional survey design was used. Data was collected from 1051 school and university students aged 16-24 years. Measures of intention, direct attitude and indirect attitude were taken. Participants were asked to select outcome expectancies which were most important in determining whether they would use condoms with casual sexual partners. Results: People with lower safe sex intentions were more likely than those with safer sex intentions to select all positive outcome expectancies for unprotected sex as salient, and less likely to select all negative outcome expectancies as salient. Outcome expectancies for which the greatest proportion of participants in the less safe sex group held an unfavourable position were: showing that I am a caring person, making sexual experiences less enjoyable, and protecting against pregnancy. Conclusions: The findings point to ways in which the attitudes of those with less safe sex intentions could be altered in order to motivate positive behavioural change. They suggest that it would be advantageous to highlight the potential for condom use to demonstrate a caring attitude, to challenge the potential for protected sex to reduce sexual pleasure, and to target young adults risk appraisals for pregnancy as a consequence of unprotected sex with casual sexual partners

    Chaos Thresholds in finite Fermi systems

    The development of Quantum Chaos in finite interacting Fermi systems is considered. At sufficiently high excitation energy the direct two-particle interaction may mix into an eigen-state the exponentially large number of simple Slater-determinant states. Nevertheless, the transition from Poisson to Wigner-Dyson statistics of energy levels is governed by the effective high order interaction between states very distant in the Fock space. The concrete form of the transition depends on the way one chooses to work out the problem of factorial divergency of the number of Feynman diagrams.     Decay of Quasi-Particle in a Quantum Dot: the role of Energy Resolution

    The disintegration of quasiparticle in a quantum dot due to the electron interaction is considered. It was predicted recently that above the energy \eps^{*} = \Delta(g/\ln g)^{1/2} each one particle peak in the spectrum is split into many components (Δ\Delta and gg are the one particle level spacing and conductance). We show that the observed value of \eps^{*} should depend on the experimental resolution \delta \eps. In the broad region of variation of \delta \eps the lng\ln g should be replaced by \ln(\Delta/ g\delta \eps). We also give the arguments against the delocalization transition in the Fock space. Most likely the number of satellite peaks grows continuously with energy, being 1\sim 1 at \eps \sim \eps^{*}, but remains finite at \eps > \eps^{*}.     Suppression of Ground-State Magnetization in Finite-Sized Systems Due to Off-Diagonal Interaction Fluctuations

    We study a generic model of interacting fermions in a finite-sized disordered system. We show that the off-diagonal interaction matrix elements induce density of states fluctuations which generically favor a minimum spin ground state at large interaction amplitude, UU. This effect competes with the exchange effect which favors large magnetization at large UU, and it suppresses this exchange magnetization in a large parameter range. When off-diagonal fluctuations dominate, the model predicts a spin gap which is larger for odd-spin ground states as for even-spin, suggesting a simple experimental signature of this off-diagonal effect in Coulomb blockade transport measurements.Comment: Final, substantially modified version of the article.
