    The effects of blockchain on supply chain trust : a thesis presented in partial of the requirements for the Master of Supply Chain Management at Massey University, Palmerston North, New Zealand

    Enterprises place strategic importance on supply chains to effectively manage their flow of materials, products, and information. Supply chains primary aim is to have the right product, at the right place, at the right cost, at the right time. Therefore, any gain in efficiency leads to a competitive advantage for the enterprise. A key element to achieving differentiation from competitors is through collaborative partnerships with supply chain suppliers and ultimately, this is achieved by the presence of high-level trust amongst stakeholders. The academic pursuit of this research paper is to explore the type of trust found in supply chain relationships and what effect the adoption of an innovative technology like blockchain would have on trust. Through a thorough literature review, this research thesis addresses comparisons of types of trust, the importance of trust and how trust is achieved in supply chains. Blockchain is, by all definitions, a nascent technology and this amplifies concerns of risk from enterprise and further increases its barriers to adoption. This research thesis argues that blockchain is particularly exposed to a slow rate of adoption due to a lack of knowledge of what distinguishes it from other exponential technologies. In arguing this the research seeks to answer the question: how does blockchain affect trust in supply chain relationships? Through the development of a survey and semi-structured interviews, responses capture the attitude of supply chain professionals surrounding perceived trust in their supply chain, their piloting of exponential technologies and the biggest inhibitors they have experienced to implementing blockchain in their organisations. One of the conclusions of this research is that through the successful implementation of blockchain, enterprises are likely to see increased trust, sustainability, visibility, and efficiency. This cannot be achieved however without an increased understanding from management about the technology, its use cases, and the efficiencies it will bring to a modern, resilient, and adaptive supply chain. This research establishes that the future for blockchain is optimistic if greater awareness of the technological benefits is exposed to the supply chain industry and its various stakeholders

    Murine cytomegalovirus protein pM92 Is a conserved regulator of viral late gene expression

    In this study, we report that murine cytomegalovirus (MCMV) protein pM92 regulates viral late gene expression during virus infection. Previously, we have shown that MCMV protein pM79 and its human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) homologue pUL79 are required for late viral gene transcription. Identification of additional factors involved is critical to dissecting the mechanism of this regulation. We show here that pM92 accumulated abundantly at late times of infection in a DNA synthesis-dependent manner and localized to nuclear viral replication compartments. To investigate the role of pM92, we constructed a recombinant virus SMin92, in which pM92 expression was disrupted by an insertional/frameshift mutation. During infection, SMin92 accumulated representative viral immediate-early gene products, early gene products, and viral DNA sufficiently but had severe reduction in the accumulation of late gene products and was thus unable to produce infectious progeny. Coimmunoprecipitation and mass spectrometry analysis revealed an interaction between pM92 and pM79, as well as between their HCMV homologues pUL92 and pUL79. Importantly, we showed that the growth defect of pUL92-deficient HCMV could be rescued in trans by pM92. This study indicates that pM92 is an additional viral regulator of late gene expression, that these regulators (represented by pM92 and pM79) may need to complex with each other for their activity, and that pM92 and pUL92 share a conserved function in CMV infection. pM92 represents a potential new target for therapeutic intervention in CMV disease, and a gateway into studying a largely uncharted viral process that is critical to the viral life cycle

    Weight loss and competition weight in Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) athletes

    Previous research has demonstrated that professional mixed martial arts (MMA) athletes employ a variety of weight manipulation strategies to compete at given weight classes. Although there is much literature demonstrating weight manipulation methods, minimal research exists analyzing how much weight MMA athletes lose prior to the official weigh-in. Moreover, there is minimal research examining how much weight professional MMA athletes gain between the official weigh-in and competition. Therefore, the purpose of the current study was to analyze weight loss/regain in professional MMA athletes. Data collected from 616 professional MMA athletes (31.1 ± 4.0 yrs. ; 177.1 ± 4.7 cm) competing for the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) between 2020 and 2022 were used for the study. The athlete’s weight was obtained 72 h, 48 h, and 24 h prior to the official weigh-in, at the official weigh-in, and prior to competition. Random effects analysis was utilized to compare weight at a variety of time points between different weight classes. All statistics were analyzed, and significance was set at p ≤ 0.05. There is a significant (p ≤ 0.05) difference between weight classes and time points in professional MMA. MMA athletes decrease body weight significantly prior to the official weigh-in. MMA athletes increase body weight significantly between official weigh-in and competition. Based on these data, it appears that MMA athletes average a weight loss of nearly 7 % within 72 h prior to the official weigh-in. The data also suggest that athletes gain nearly 10 % of total weight between the official weigh-in and competition

    Liver carnitine metabolism after partial hepatectomy in the rat Effects of nutritional status and inhibition of carnitine palmitoyltransferase

    AbstractThis study examined the effects of partial hepatectony on hepatic carnitine and acylcarnitine concentrations in fed or 24 h-starved partially hepatectonized (PH) or sham-operated (SO) rats at 1 or 4 days after surgery. The ratio of free to esterified carnitine was low in fed PH rats at day 1 : the low ratio was increased to the SO value when mitochondrial fat oxidation was inhibited by 2-tetradecylglycidate. Starvation (24 h) increased plasma [non-esterified fatty acid] in PH or SO rats, the increases being greater at day 1 than at day 4. Hepatic [long-chain acylcarnitine] were also increased. These latter increases were a consequence of increased mitochondrial fat oxidation since they were not observed in PH or SO rats treated with 2-tetradecylglycidate. Whereas the starvation-induced increase in long-chain acylcarnitine was associated with increased [ketone body] in livers of SO rats at both day 1 and day 4 after surgery, [ketone body] was inappropriately low for the steady-state long-chain [acylcarnitine] in livers of PH rats at the first post-operative day. This was not a consequence of a decrease in [total carnitine] in the liver. The results are discussed with reference to the role of the liver in determining the relative proportions of the fat fuels available for extrahepatic tissues and the effects of liver cell proliferation on hepatic triacylclycerol metabolism

    Risk Factors for High Early Mortality in Patients on Antiretroviral Treatment in a Rural District of Malawi.

    OBJECTIVES: Among adults started on antiretroviral treatment (ART) in a rural district hospital (a) to determine the cumulative proportion of deaths that occur within 3 and 6 months of starting ART, and (b) to identify risk factors that may be associated with such mortality. DESIGN AND SETTING: A cross-sectional analytical study set in Thyolo district, Malawi. METHODS: Over a 2-year period (April 2003 to April 2005) mortality within the first 3 and 6 months of starting ART was determined and risk factors were examined. RESULTS: A total of 1507 individuals (517 men and 990 women), whose median age was 35 years were included in the study. There were a total of 190 (12.6%) deaths on ART of which 116 (61%) occurred within the first 3 months (very early mortality) and 150 (79%) during the first 6 months of initiating ART. Significant risk factors associated with such mortality included WHO stage IV disease, a baseline CD4 cell count under 50 cells/mul and increasing grades of malnutrition. A linear trend in mortality was observed with increasing grades of malnutrition (chi for trend = 96.1, P </= 0.001) and decreasing CD4 cell counts (chi for trend = 72.4, P </= 0.001). Individuals who were severely malnourished [body mass index (BMI) < 16.0 kg/m] had a six times higher risk of dying in the first 3 months than those with a normal nutritional status. CONCLUSIONS: Among individuals starting ART, the BMI and clinical staging could be important screening tools for use to identify and target individuals who, despite ART, are still at a high risk of early death

    Background: Prompt treatment following Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA) can reduce the risk of subsequent stroke and disability. However, many patients delay in making contact with medical services. This study aimed to explore TIA patients’ accounts of delay between symptom onset and contacting medical services including how decisions to contact services were made and the factors discussed in relation to delay. Methods: Twenty interviews were conducted with TIA patients in England. Using a previous systematic review as an initial framework, interview data were organised into categories of symptom recognition, presence of others and type of care sought. A thematic analysis was then conducted to explore descriptions of care-seeking relevant to each category. Results: Delay in contacting medical services varied from less than an hour to eight days. Awareness of typical stroke symptoms could lead to urgent action when more severe TIA symptoms were present but could lead to delay when experienced symptoms were less severe. The role of friends and family varied widely from deciding on and enacting care-seeking decisions to simply providing transport to the GP practice. When family or friends played a greater role, and both made and enacted care-seeking decisions, delays were often shorter, even when patients themselves failed to identify symptoms. Healthcare professionals also impacted on patients ’ care-seeking with greater delays in seeking further care for the same episode described when patients perceived a lack of urgency during initial healthcare interactions
