Determining Heavy Mass Parameters in Supersymmetric SO(10) Models
Extrapolations of soft scalar mass parameters in supersymmetric theories can
be used to explore elements of the physics scenario near the grand unification
scale. We investigate the potential of this method in the lepton sector of
SO(10) which incorporates right-handed neutrino superfields. The method is
exemplified in two models by exploring limits on the precision that can be
expected from coherent LHC and e+e- collider analyses in the reconstruction of
the fundamental scalar mass parameters at the unification scale and of the
D-terms related to the breaking of grand unification symmetries. In addition,
the mass of the third-generation right-handed neutrino can be estimated in
seesaw scenarios. Even though the models are simplified and not intended to
account for all aspects of a final comprehensive SO(10) theory, they provide
nevertheless a valid base for identifying essential elements that can be
inferred on the fundamental high-scale theory from high-energy experiments.Comment: 26 pp LaTeX; version published in Phys. Rev.
Quark core formation in spinning-down pulsars
Pulsars spin-down due to magnetic torque reducing its radius and increasing
the central energy density. Some pulsar which are born with central densities
close to the critical value of quark deconfinement may undergo a phase
transition and structural re-arrengement. This process may excite oscillation
modes and emmit gravitational waves. We determine the rate of quark core
formation in neutron stars using a realistic population synthesis code.Comment: Proceedings of the 2nd International Workshop on Astronomy and

Expected Coalescence Rate of Double Neutron Stars for Ground Based Interferometers
In this paper we present new estimates of the coalescence rate of neutron
star binaries in the local universe and we discuss its consequences for the
first generations of ground based interferometers. Our approach based on both
evolutionary and statistical methods gives a galactic merging rate of 1.7
10 yr, in the range of previous estimates 10 - 10
yr. The local rate which includes the contribution of elliptical
galaxies is two times higher, in the order of 3.4 10 yr. We
predict one detection every 148 and 125 years with initial VIRGO and LIGO, and
up to 6 events per year with their advanced configuration. Our recent detection
rate estimates from investigations on VIRGO future improvements are quoted.Comment: talk given at the GWDAW9 (Annecy, 2004) to be published in CQ

Analysing people's movement in the built environment via space syntax, objective tracking and gaze data
In this paper we use analysis tools from Space Syntax and objective observation of the human behaviour, to understand the impact of landmarks in the walking patterns of users of spaces. Our case study was a large exterior public open space (University Campus), in which participants could walk freely and simultaneously be tracked by several sensors. We carried Space Syntax analysis for this space, and then collected Global Positioning System (GPS) tracking information and used a mobile eye-tracking device to acquire eye gaze information. The collected data allowed us to map and analyse each subject behaviour in the public space. A more specific analysis was done to four selected landmarks that, according to the Space Syntax analysis, were the ones with higher integration values. Results indicate that landmarks with such higher integration values show also a larger count of fixations and saccades of gaze interaction.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
