Non-extensive processes associated with heating of the Galactic disc
We analyse the mechanisms ruling galactic disc heating through the dynamics
of space velocities , and , extracted from the Geneva-Copenhagen
catalogue. To do this, we use a model based on non-extensive statistical
mechanics, where we derive the probability distribution functions that quantify
the non-Gaussian effects. Furthermore, we find that the deviation at a
given stellar age follows non-random behaviour. As a result, the -index
behaviour indicates that the vertical component , perpendicular to the
Galactic plane, does not ``heat up'' at random, which is in disagreement with
previous works that attributed the evolution of to randomness. Finally, our
results bring a new perspective to this matter and open the way for studying
Galactic kinematic components through the eyes of more robust statistical
models that consider non-Gaussian effects.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables. Accepted to EP
Travel of studies: cities of João Pessoa, Maceio, Natal and Recife: a look on the urban space and brazilian architectural production
Ponencia presentada a Session 8: Dimensiones psicosociales de la arquitectura y el urbanismo / Psycological dimensions of architecture and planningThis article aims to present the methodology and the final results of the elective course “Travel of Studies” which belongs to the new pedagogical project from the Architecture and Urbanism course at the University Federal of Pernambuco. It was offered for the first time in 2013.The discipline was organized to occur in four long weekends through visits of four capitals of the Northeast of Brazil: Recife, João Pessoa, Natal and Maceió. The purpose was to allow the students to apprehend the cities through four axis: intervention in historical center (axis 1), production of urban space (axis 2), production of coastline space (axis 3) and contemporary architecture (axis 4). After the four visits were complete, we prepared a poster with the comparison of the cities based on the identification of the similarities and differences of each axis we have studied
The compound Poisson limit ruling periodic extreme behaviour of non-uniformly hyperbolic dynamics
We prove that the distributional limit of the normalised number of returns to
small neighbourhoods of periodic points of non-uniformly hyperbolic dynamical
systems is compound Poisson. The returns to small balls around a fixed point in
the phase space correspond to the occurrence of rare events, or exceedances of
high thresholds, so that there is a connection between the laws of Return Times
Statistics and Extreme Value Laws. The fact that the fixed point in the phase
space is a repelling periodic point implies that there is a tendency for the
exceedances to appear in clusters whose average sizes is given by the Extremal
Index, which depends on the expansion of the system at the periodic point.
We recall that for generic points, the exceedances, in the limit, are
singular and occur at Poisson times. However, around periodic points, the
picture is different: the respective point processes of exceedances converge to
a compound Poisson process, so instead of single exceedances, we have entire
clusters of exceedances occurring at Poisson times with a geometric
distribution ruling its multiplicity.
The systems to which our results apply include: general piecewise expanding
maps of the interval (Rychlik maps), maps with indifferent fixed points
(Manneville-Pomeau maps) and Benedicks-Carleson quadratic maps.Comment: To appear in Communications in Mathematical Physic
Stacking Gravitational Wave Signals from Soft Gamma Repeater Bursts
Soft gamma repeaters (SGRs) have unique properties that make them intriguing
targets for gravitational wave (GW) searches. They are nearby, their burst
emission mechanism may involve neutron star crust fractures and excitation of
quasi-normal modes, and they burst repeatedly and sometimes spectacularly. A
recent LIGO search for transient GW from these sources placed upper limits on a
set of almost 200 individual SGR bursts. These limits were within the
theoretically predicted range of some models. We present a new search strategy
which builds upon the method used there by "stacking" potential GW signals from
multiple SGR bursts. We assume that variation in the time difference between
burst electromagnetic emission and burst GW emission is small relative to the
GW signal duration, and we time-align GW excess power time-frequency tilings
containing individual burst triggers to their corresponding electromagnetic
emissions. Using Monte Carlo simulations, we confirm that gains in GW energy
sensitivity of N^{1/2} are possible, where N is the number of stacked SGR
bursts. Estimated sensitivities for a mock search for gravitational waves from
the 2006 March 29 storm from SGR 1900+14 are also presented, for two GW
emission models, "fluence-weighted" and "flat" (unweighted).Comment: 17 pages, 16 figures, submitted to PR
