    Adaptação do software TABWIN para caracterização das tipologias familiares no nordeste paraense.

    O software TABWIN permitiu definir a seleção representativa (de 20% do total de 400 agricultores famílias). A seleção foi de acordo com o nível de complexidade, características e variáveis inerentes a cada um. A escolha dos tipos familiares foi feita a partir das analise das características previamente estabelecidas nas etapas iniciais (DI-hipóteses). Para tanto as informações foram combinadas e filtradas em função das diferentes combinações das variáveis, para que pudesse ter uma ampla caracterização e uma maior representatividade dos diferentes tipos familiares. Conclui-se que os tipos encontrados e caracterizados foram denominados de agroextrativista (12%), roceiro (35%), diversificado (22%), diarista (18%) e pequeno criador (13%)

Castanhal, PA, Brazil.This study aimed to evaluate phosphorus (P) concentration in serum and bone, the percentage of ash and the specific bone density of buffaloes on Ilha de Marajó before and after mineral supplementation. For this study, 14 crossbred buffaloes of Murrah and Mediterranean descent aged between 18 and 36 months were used. The average values of P before supplementation in serum and bone, the percentage of bone ash and the specific bone density were 5.68mg/dL±1.18, 16.53%±0.53, 59.95%±1.96 and 1.52g/cm3 ±0.32, respectively, which demonstrated P deficiency in animals raised on Ilha de Marajó. After supplementation with P for a period of seven months, the values were 6.61mg/dL±0.87, 16.90%±0.56 and 60.30%±0.95 and 1.71g/cm3 ±0.21, respectively. These results showed a significant increase in P concentration in blood serum, specific bone density and percentage of P in ash (P<0.05), but there was no significant increase in the percentage of ash. The average increase in P in the serum and ash did not reach normal levels in all animals; however, 28.6% of the animals had normal values of P in serum and 50% in the ash, and 64.3% had normal specific bone density values. The nonre-establishment, in some of the animals, of the variables of P serum and bone after supplementation for seven months may have occurred as a result of the low intake of the mineral mixture and by the low concentration of P in the Brachiaria brizantha cv. Marandu used for feeding animals during the experiment

    Benthic silicon cycling in the Arctic Barents Sea: a reaction–transport model study

    Over recent decades the highest rates of water column warming and sea ice loss across the Arctic Ocean have been observed in the Barents Sea. These physical changes have resulted in rapid ecosystem adjustments, manifesting as a northward migration of temperate phytoplankton species at the expense of silica-based diatoms. These changes will potentially alter the composition of phytodetritus deposited at the seafloor, which acts as a biogeochemical reactor and is pivotal in the recycling of key nutrients, such as silicon (Si). To appreciate the sensitivity of the Barents Sea benthic system to the observed changes in surface primary production, there is a need to better understand this benthic–pelagic coupling. Stable Si isotopic compositions of sediment pore waters and the solid phase from three stations in the Barents Sea reveal a coupling of the iron (Fe) and Si cycles, the contemporaneous dissolution of lithogenic silicate minerals (LSi) alongside biogenic silica (BSi), and the potential for the reprecipitation of dissolved silicic acid (DSi) as authigenic clay minerals (AuSi). However, as reaction rates cannot be quantified from observational data alone, a mechanistic understanding of which factors control these processes is missing. Here, we employ reaction–transport modelling together with observational data to disentangle the reaction pathways controlling the cycling of Si within the seafloor. Processes such as the dissolution of BSi are active on multiple timescales, ranging from weeks to hundreds of years, which we are able to examine through steady state and transient model runs. Steady state simulations show that 60 % to 98 % of the sediment pore water DSi pool may be sourced from the dissolution of LSi, while the isotopic composition is also strongly influenced by the desorption of Si from metal oxides, most likely Fe (oxyhydr)oxides (FeSi), as they reductively dissolve. Further, our model simulations indicate that between 2.9 % and 37 % of the DSi released into sediment pore waters is subsequently removed by a process that has a fractionation factor of approximately −2 ‰, most likely representing reprecipitation as AuSi. These observations are significant as the dissolution of LSi represents a source of new Si to the ocean DSi pool and precipitation of AuSi an additional sink, which could address imbalances in the current regional ocean Si budget. Lastly, transient modelling suggests that at least one-third of the total annual benthic DSi flux could be sourced from the dissolution of more reactive, diatom-derived BSi deposited after the surface water bloom at the marginal ice zone. This benthic–pelagic coupling will be subject to change with the continued northward migration of Atlantic phytoplankton species, the northward retreat of the marginal ice zone and the observed decline in the DSi inventory of the subpolar North Atlantic Ocean over the last 3 decades

    Influence of physical and technical aspects on change of direction performance of rugby players: An exploratory study

    We examined the relationships between change of direction (COD) speed and deficit, and a series of speed-and power-related measurements in national team rugby union players and analyzed the influence of movement patterns on COD ability. Eleven male athletes completed the following physical assessments on different days: day 1—anthropometric measurements, and lower-body kinematic parameters (assessed with eight inertial sensors) and completion time in COD tests (proagility, 45◦ cutting maneuver (CUT), and “L” (L-Drill)); day 2—bilateral and unilateral squat and countermovement jumps, 40 m linear sprint, and bar-power output in the jump squat and half-squat exercises. Pearson’s product–moment correlations were performed to determine the relationships between COD velocities, COD deficits, and the speed–power variables. Differences between players with higher and lower COD deficits were examined using magnitude-based inferences. Results showed that (1) greater sprint momentum was associated with higher COD deficits, particularly in drills with sharper angles and multiple directional changes (L-drill and pro-agility); (2) higher unilateral jump heights were associated with greater COD deficits in the pro-agility and L-drill but not in the CUT; (3) faster athletes were less efficient at changing direction and presented greater trunk and knee flexion angles during COD maneuvers, probably as a consequence of higher inertia

Curitiba, PR, Brazil.This study collected samples from 50 Holstein cows, most intensively bred, and from the Campos Gerais region, Paraná, with an average milk production of 30.21L/day. Samples of the liver, spleen and lymph nodes were collected to determine the levels of copper, cobalt, iron, molybdenum and zinc. Spleen and lymph nodes were subjected to histological analysis and evaluation of the degree of hemosiderosis. The average concentrations of copper (495.05ppm), molybdenum (4.19ppm), and zinc (274.49ppm) were higher than those established for the bovines. For cobalt 26% of the animals presented levels below the established level, which characterized cobalt deficiency. Only iron (299.12ppm) exhibited an adequate average level. Histopathologically hemosiderosis was observed mainly in the spleen (78%) and less frequently in the lymph nodes (20%). The observation of hemosiderin in the spleen and lymph nodes is not related to copper deficiency. Still it may be related to high levels of molybdenum, zinc, iron, or other undetermined causes

    Atributos biofísicos de frutos e sementes e emergência de plântulas de jutaí-açú.

    Estudos biométricos de frutos e sementes podem detectar variabilidade fenotípica entre indivíduos da mesma espécie e serem aplicados em programas de melhoramento genético. Além disso, contribuem para a seleção de sementes com maior padrão de qualidade biofísica a serem destinadas à produção de mudas. O trabalho objetivou avaliar os atributos biofísicos de frutos e sementes e emergência de plântulas de diferentes procedências de jutaí-açú (Hymenaea courbaril L.). Os frutos e sementes são procedentes dos municípios de Ananindeua e Portel, Pará. Para a avaliação biométrica de frutos e sementes e massa fresca foram utilizados 50 e 100 unidades, respectivamente. Adicionalmente, avaliou-se o grau de umidade e número de sementes por fruto. O teste de emergência foi realizado em delineamento inteiramente ao acaso, constando de quatro repetições de 25 sementes. Avaliou-se a porcentagem de emergência (E), índice de velocidade de emergência (IVE) e tempo médio de emergência (TME). A procedência de Ananindeua apresentou maiores médias para comprimento, espessura e número de sementes por fruto. Em contraste, a procedência de Portel apresentou as maiores médias para comprimento e espessura das sementes. A procedência de Ananindeua foi superior fisiologicamente em relação à procedência Portel, sendo E igual a 73 e 21%, respectivamente, o TME foi 14,86 e 23,03, respectivamente, e o IVE foi 1,27 e 0,23, respectivamente.     Effects of Ibuprofen Use on Lymphocyte Count and Oxidative Stress in Elite Paralympic Powerlifting.

    Background: Paralympic Powerlifting (PP) training tends to promote fatigue and oxidative stress. Objective: To analyze the effects of ibuprofen use on performance and oxidative stress in post-training PP athletes. Methodology: Ten national level PP athletes (age: 27.13 ± 5.57) were analyzed for oxidative stress in post-training. The study was carried out in three weeks, (1) familiarization and (2 and 3) evaluated the recovery with the use of a placebo (PLA) and ibuprofen (IBU), 800 mg. The Peak Torque (PT), Torque Development Rate (TDR), Fatigue Index (FI), reactive substances to thiobarbituric acid (TBARS) and sulfhydryl groups (SH) were evaluated. The training consisted of five sets of five repetitions (80–90%) 1-Repetition Maximum (1-RM) in the bench press. Results: The IBU showed a higher PT (24 and 48 h, p = 0.04, ɳ2 p = 0.39), a lower FI (24 h, p = 0.01, ɳ2p = 0.74) and an increased lymphocyte count (p < 0.001; ɳ2p = 4.36).     Morphometric diversity between fruits and seeds of mahogany trees (Swietenia macrophylla King.) from Parakanã Indigenous Land, Pará State, Brazil.

    Morphometric studies of fruits and forest seeds may indicate the presence of variability among individuals of the same species. The objective of this study was to investigate the morphometric diversity of fruits and seeds of Swietenia macrophylla in 20 individuals belong to the Parakanã Indigenous Land, PA, Brazil. The following characteristics of the fruits, wingless seeds, and seeds without testa of the 20 trees were evaluated. Analysis of variance was performed on the collected data, followed by test of the means by Scott-Knott test. Genetic dissimilarity was assessed through means of the Unweighted Pair Group Method with Arithmetic Mean (UPGMA) grouping technique and canonical variables (CV). The results indicate high phenotypic diversity among mahogany fruits and seeds and the grouping of trees regardless is of the location of the indigenous village. Thus, mahogany trees have high genetic potential for germplasm conservation, seed harvesting, and breeding programs
