The primary Brazilian sector is of great importance for its economy and the rice farming of Rio Grande do Sul is inserted in this context, also, with a great relevance because it has a significant number of producers that have profits from this activity. However, there is a reduction of profitability in the sector due to the Imports Mercosulinas that press the internal prices, according to the Brazilian producers. Also, the growth of the internal production may cause the same effect. This paper aim to prove that the imported rice from Mercosur and the rice production from Rio Grande do Sul have influence on the internal price and that the relations between the variables take place in the curvilinear form and cannot be analyzed by linear methods. For this, it was used descriptive statistic, analysis of correlation and of models of linear, semi-logarithmic, quadratic and cubic regression. It was concluded that there are influences between the variables and that the relations are linear for production and prices and curvilinear for imports and prices.Mercosul, setor orizícola, preço, Mercosur, orizícula sector, price, Crop Production/Industries,

Technical efficiency and farm size: an analysis based on the Brazilian agriculture and livestock census

This paper analyzes the relationship between technical efficiency and farm size, considering different classes of area and efficiency levels in Brazil. Stochastic Frontier Production was used to obtain the technical efficiency and the Quantile Regression was used to identify their determinants. Microdata from the 2006 Brazilian Agriculture Census were used. It was found a positive and non-linear relationship between farm size and efficiency in all area classes. However, the more efficient the producers, the weaker the relationship, which indicates that such producers were less dependent on the land factor. In addition, irrigation, technical assistance and cooperatives membership were the factors which contributed most to increasing efficiency, especially for the less efficient producers

Rural extension and technical efficiency in the Brazilian agricultural sector

In this paper, we identify the effect of rural extension on the productive performance of Brazilian agricultural establishments, using technical efficiency as a measure of farm performance. The data used is drawn from the microdata of the 2006 Agricultural Census, accessed directly from the IBGE secrecy room. For this, we use an approach that combines the stochastic production frontier, considering selection bias in the adoption of rural extension (Heckman’s approach) and entropy balancing. We find that rural extension increases efficiency in the use of the productive inputs, with more technical efficiency found among adopting producers than non-adopters. When considering the differences according to farm size, an even greater effect is observed for larger producers. In addition, public rural extension generates higher technical efficiency scores than those obtained by privately-operated establishments
