Medicinal plants are essential in the medical systems of the Mixe and Zapotec. In this study ethno-ecological strategies, employed by the two neighboring Indian groups in Mexico, for obtaining medicinal plants are analyzed. The indigenous classification of the environment is notably different from the Western one and distinguishes six dissimilar principal "zones” or land use types. Most ethnomedically important species are cultivated in the "house garden” or gathered in the community or its immediate surroundings. The house garden, for example, contributes 31.8% and 26.2% of all medical taxa for the Mixe and Zapotec, respectively. These ethnobotanical data on the indigenous uses indicate that anthropogenic types of vegetation yield the largest percentage of medicinal tax

The dynamics of gastrointestinal helminthiasis was studied in buffalo calves naturally exposed to helminth infection at two farms in Minas Gerais, Brazil. The effect of helminthiasis was evaluated with respect to weight gain of naturally infected untreated calves versus those which received anthelmintic treatment either with fenbendazole or ivermectin. The treated animals had significantly (p<0.05) higher weight gain. Strongyloides papillosus was diagnosed from 30 to 60 days after birth, and Toxocara vitulorum from 60 to 90 days. During spring, there was a rise in the eggs per gram (EPG) count of Trichostrongylidae. Severe infection of Paracooperia nodulosa was detected in few 9-month-old buffalo calves. The results of this study indicate efficacy of fenbendazole and ivermectin in different age group calves for better health and reduced probability of helminth resistance. This study also indicates the necessity for good nutritional management of buffalo calves to improve the efficacy of parasite control

Water birth: is the water an additional reservoir for group B streptococcus?

    Get PDF
Objective: Water birth became popular in the last years, despite the fact that many questions like the risk of infection for the newborn remain unanswered. Group B streptococcal (GBS) infections in the newborn remain a challenge in obstetrics and neonatology. Method: We conducted a prospective trial to study the impact of water birth on the colonization rate of the bath water and, more importantly, the GBS-colonization rate of the newborn. Result: After water birth the bath water was significantly more often colonized with GBS than after immersion followed by a delivery in bed. The newborns, however, showed no difference in GBS colonization and there was even a trend towards less GBS colonization of the newborn after a water delivery. Conclusion: Regarding GBS colonization of the newborn during water birth there might be a wash out effect, which protects the children during the deliver

Prone equals prone? Impact of positioning techniques on respiratory function in anesthetized and paralyzed healthy children

Objectives: Although the prone position is effectively used to improve oxygenation, its impact on functional residual capacity is controversial. Different techniques of body positioning might be an important confounding factor. The aim of this study was to determine the impact of two different prone positioning techniques on functional residual capacity and ventilation distribution in anesthetized, preschool-aged children. Design: Functional residual capacity and lung clearance index, ameasure of ventilation homogeneity, were calculated using asulfur-hexafluoride multibreath washout technique. After intubation, measurements were taken in the supine position and, in random order, in the flat prone position and the augmented prone position (gel pads supporting the pelvis and the upper thorax). Setting: Pediatric anesthesia unit of university hospital. Patients and participants: Thirty preschool children without cardiopulmonary disease undergoing elective surgery. Measurements and results: Mean (range) age was 48.5 (24-80) months, weight 17.2 (10.5-26.9) kg, functional residual capacity (mean ± SD) 22.9 ± 6.2 ml.kg−1 in the supine position and 23.3 ± 5.6 ml.kg−1 in the flat prone position, while lung clearance indices were 8.1 ± 2.3 vs. 7.9 ± 2.3, respectively. In contrast, functional residual capacity increased to 27.6 ± 6.5 ml.kg−1 (p< 0.001) in the augmented prone position while at the same time the lung clearance index decreased to 6.7 ± 0.9 (p< 0.001). Conclusions: Functional residual capacity and ventilation distribution were similar in the supine and flat prone positions, while these parameters improved significantly in the augmented prone position, suggesting that the technique of prone positioning has major implications for pulmonary functio

Impact of depth of propofol anaesthesia on functional residual capacity and ventilation distribution in healthy preschool children

Background Propofol is commonly used in children undergoing diagnostic interventions under anaesthesia or deep sedation. Because hypoxaemia is the most common cause of critical deterioration during anaesthesia and sedation, improved understanding of the effects of anaesthetics on pulmonary function is essential. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of different levels of propofol anaesthesia on functional residual capacity (FRC) and ventilation distribution. Methods In 20 children without cardiopulmonary disease mean age (sd) 49.75 (13.3) months and mean weight (sd) 17.5 (3.9)kg, anaesthesia was induced by a bolus of i.v. propofol 2mgkg−1 followed by an infusion of propofol 120”gkg−1min−1 (level I). Then, a bolus of propofol 1mgkg−1 was given followed by a propofol infusion at 240”gkg−1min−1 (level II). FRC and lung clearance index (LCI) were calculated at each level of anaesthesia using multibreath analysis. Results The FRC mean (sd) decreased from 20.7 (3.3)mlkg−1 at anaesthesia level I to 17.7 (3.9)mlkg−1 at level II (P < 0.0001). At the same time, mean (sd) LCI increased from 10.4 (1.1) to 11.9 (2.2) (P = 0.0038), whereas bispectral index score values decreased from mean (sd) 57.5 (7.2) to 35.5 (5.9) (P < 0.0001). Conclusions Propofol elicited a deeper level of anaesthesia that led to a significant decrease of the FRC whereas at the same time the LCI, an index for ventilation distribution, increased indicating an increased vulnerability to hypoxaemi

Medicinal and food plants: Isthmus Sierra Zapotec criteria for selection

    Get PDF
The Zapotec inhabitants of the Sierra de Juarez foothills in Oaxaca (Mexico) live in an area of great biological diversity. As farmers (campesinos), and occasional gatherers, hunters, and fishermen Zapotecs have a deep relationship with, and detailed knowledge of, their natural environment. Consequently, in daily subsistence and in response to illness, plants play major roles. This paper examines cultural criteria applied by the Sierra Zapotecs for selecting plants as food and/or medicine. These criteria are based on binary forms of classiÂŹfication. While the "hot"/"cold" dichotomy is dominant, other opposing systems exist, such as amargo/simple (bitter/neutral). Whether a plant is regarded as frio ("cold"), caliente ("hot") or (in some rare cases) templado ("temperate") depends mainly on one of the following criteria: habitat and/or the season of growth and collection, analogy in appearance to aspects of the illness being treated or features associated with well-being (doctrine of signatures), and taste and smell properties. Criteria for plant selection are not based on a single classificatory system, but are an integration of several. A comparison with ethnoÂŹbotanical data from neighboring Mixe clearly showed differences due to cultural background

Consumption of cocoa flavanols results in acute improvements in mood and cognitive performance during sustained mental effort

Cocoa flavanols (CF) positively influence physiological processes in ways that suggest their consumption may improve aspects of cognitive function. This study investigated the acute cognitive and subjective effects of CF consumption during sustained mental demand. In this randomized, controlled, double-blinded, balanced, three period crossover trial 30 healthy adults consumed drinks containing 520 mg, 994 mg CF and a matched control, with a three-day washout between drinks. Assessments included the state anxiety inventory and repeated 10-min cycles of a Cognitive Demand Battery comprising of two serial subtraction tasks (Serial Threes and Serial Sevens), a Rapid Visual Information Processing (RVIP) task and a mental fatigue scale, over the course of 1 h. Consumption of both 520 mg and 994 mg CF significantly improved Serial Threes performance. The 994 mg CF beverage significantly speeded RVIP responses but also resulted in more errors during Serial Sevens. Increases in self-reported mental fatigue were significantly attenuated by the consumption of the 520 mg CF beverage only. This is the first report of acute cognitive improvements following CF consumption in healthy adults. While the mechanisms underlying the effects are unknown they may be related to known effects of CF on endothelial function and blood flow

Effect of intergranular glass films on the electrical conductivity of 3Y-TZP

    Get PDF
The electrical conductivity of 3Y-TZP ceramics containing SiO2 and Al2O3 has been investigated by complex impedance spectroscopy between 500 and 1270 K. At low temperatures, the total electrical conductivity is suppressed by the grain boundary glass films. The equilibrium thickness of intergranular films is 1-2 nm, as derived using the "brick-layer” model and measured by HRTEM. A change in the slope of the conductivity Arrhenius plots occurs at the characteristic temperature Tb at which the macroscopic grain boundary resistivity has the same value as the resistivity of the grains. The temperature dependence of the conductivity is discussed in terms of a series combination of RC element
