Matroid and Knapsack Center Problems
In the classic -center problem, we are given a metric graph, and the
objective is to open nodes as centers such that the maximum distance from
any vertex to its closest center is minimized. In this paper, we consider two
important generalizations of -center, the matroid center problem and the
knapsack center problem. Both problems are motivated by recent content
distribution network applications. Our contributions can be summarized as
follows:
1. We consider the matroid center problem in which the centers are required
to form an independent set of a given matroid. We show this problem is NP-hard
even on a line. We present a 3-approximation algorithm for the problem on
general metrics. We also consider the outlier version of the problem where a
given number of vertices can be excluded as the outliers from the solution. We
present a 7-approximation for the outlier version.
2. We consider the (multi-)knapsack center problem in which the centers are
required to satisfy one (or more) knapsack constraint(s). It is known that the
knapsack center problem with a single knapsack constraint admits a
3-approximation. However, when there are at least two knapsack constraints, we
show this problem is not approximable at all. To complement the hardness
result, we present a polynomial time algorithm that gives a 3-approximate
solution such that one knapsack constraint is satisfied and the others may be
violated by at most a factor of . We also obtain a 3-approximation
for the outlier version that may violate the knapsack constraint by

Assessing direct contributions of morphological awareness and prosodic sensitivity to children’s word reading and reading comprehension
We examined the independent contributions of prosodic sensitivity and morphological awareness to word reading, text reading accuracy, and reading comprehension. We did so in a longitudinal study of English-speaking children (N = 70). At 5 to 7 years of age, children completed the metalinguistic measures along with control measures of phonological awareness and vocabulary. Children completed the reading measures two years later. Morphological awareness, but not prosodic sensitivity made a significant independent contribution to word reading, text reading accuracy and reading comprehension. The effects of morphological awareness on reading comprehension remained after controls for word reading. These results suggest that morphological awareness needs to be considered seriously in models of reading development and that prosodic sensitivity might have primarily indirect relations to reading outcomes.

Transient Increase in Zn2+ in Hippocampal CA1 Pyramidal Neurons Causes Reversible Memory Deficit
The translocation of synaptic Zn2+ to the cytosolic compartment has been studied to understand Zn2+ neurotoxicity in neurological diseases. However, it is unknown whether the moderate increase in Zn2+ in the cytosolic compartment affects memory processing in the hippocampus. In the present study, the moderate increase in cytosolic Zn2+ in the hippocampus was induced with clioquinol (CQ), a zinc ionophore. Zn2+ delivery by Zn-CQ transiently attenuated CA1 long-term potentiation (LTP) in hippocampal slices prepared 2 h after i.p. injection of Zn-CQ into rats, when intracellular Zn2+ levels was transiently increased in the CA1 pyramidal cell layer, followed by object recognition memory deficit. Object recognition memory was transiently impaired 30 min after injection of ZnCl2 into the CA1, but not after injection into the dentate gyrus that did not significantly increase intracellular Zn2+ in the granule cell layer of the dentate gyrus. Object recognition memory deficit may be linked to the preferential increase in Zn2+ and/or the preferential vulnerability to Zn2+ in CA1 pyramidal neurons. In the case of the cytosolic increase in endogenous Zn2+ in the CA1 induced by 100 mM KCl, furthermore, object recognition memory was also transiently impaired, while ameliorated by co-injection of CaEDTA to block the increase in cytosolic Zn2+. The present study indicates that the transient increase in cytosolic Zn2+ in CA1 pyramidal neurons reversibly impairs object recognition memory

Mode-coupling theory for multiple-time correlation functions of tagged particle densities and dynamical filters designed for glassy systems
The theoretical framework for higher-order correlation functions involving
multiple times and multiple points in a classical, many-body system developed
by Van Zon and Schofield [Phys. Rev. E 65, 011106 (2002)] is extended here to
include tagged particle densities. Such densities have found an intriguing
application as proposed measures of dynamical heterogeneities in structural
glasses. The theoretical formalism is based upon projection operator techniques
which are used to isolate the slow time evolution of dynamical variables by
expanding the slowly-evolving component of arbitrary variables in an infinite
basis composed of the products of slow variables of the system. The resulting
formally exact mode-coupling expressions for multiple-point and multiple-time
correlation functions are made tractable by applying the so-called N-ordering
method. This theory is used to derive for moderate densities the leading mode
coupling expressions for indicators of relaxation type and domain relaxation,
which use dynamical filters that lead to multiple-time correlations of a tagged
particle density. The mode coupling expressions for higher order correlation
functions are also succesfully tested against simulations of a hard sphere

On the Treewidth of Dynamic Graphs
Dynamic graph theory is a novel, growing area that deals with graphs that
change over time and is of great utility in modelling modern wireless, mobile
and dynamic environments. As a graph evolves, possibly arbitrarily, it is
challenging to identify the graph properties that can be preserved over time
and understand their respective computability.
In this paper we are concerned with the treewidth of dynamic graphs. We focus
on metatheorems, which allow the generation of a series of results based on
general properties of classes of structures. In graph theory two major
metatheorems on treewidth provide complexity classifications by employing
structural graph measures and finite model theory. Courcelle's Theorem gives a
general tractability result for problems expressible in monadic second order
logic on graphs of bounded treewidth, and Frick & Grohe demonstrate a similar
result for first order logic and graphs of bounded local treewidth.
We extend these theorems by showing that dynamic graphs of bounded (local)
treewidth where the length of time over which the graph evolves and is observed
is finite and bounded can be modelled in such a way that the (local) treewidth
of the underlying graph is maintained. We show the application of these results
to problems in dynamic graph theory and dynamic extensions to static problems.
In addition we demonstrate that certain widely used dynamic graph classes
naturally have bounded local treewidth
Affective Man-Machine Interface: Unveiling human emotions through biosignals
As is known for centuries, humans exhibit an electrical profile. This profile is altered through various psychological and physiological processes, which can be measured through biosignals; e.g., electromyography (EMG) and electrodermal activity (EDA). These biosignals can reveal our emotions and, as such, can serve as an advanced man-machine interface (MMI) for empathic consumer products. However, such a MMI requires the correct classification of biosignals to emotion classes. This chapter starts with an introduction on biosignals for emotion detection. Next, a state-of-the-art review is presented on automatic emotion classification. Moreover, guidelines are presented for affective MMI. Subsequently, a research is presented that explores the use of EDA and three facial EMG signals to determine neutral, positive, negative, and mixed emotions, using recordings of 21 people. A range of techniques is tested, which resulted in a generic framework for automated emotion classification with up to 61.31% correct classification of the four emotion classes, without the need of personal profiles. Among various other directives for future research, the results emphasize the need for parallel processing of multiple biosignals
Co-ordination of local policies for urban development and public transportation in four Swiss cities
The present article aims at assessing the possibility for urban areas to coordinate local policies of urban development and public transportation and at explaining the differences in this achievement between urban regions. In order to do so, the study draws support from two empirical sources: a historical analysis of the "mass-production" generated by the public service sectors in the field of transport and urban development in the cities of Basel, Bern, Geneva, and Lausanne since 1950, and a series of six case studies in these four cities. The study identifies factors located both at context level regarding morphological and geographical conditions as well as institutional settings and case-specific idiosyncrasies regarding organizational structure, past policy decisions, as well as vocational cultures that determine the possibility for urban areas to meet the need for policy coordination
