    Evolution of crystalline electric field effects, superconductivity, and heavy fermion behavior in the specific heat of Pr(Os1−x_{1-x}Rux_x)4_4Sb12_{12}

    Specific heat C(T)C(T) measurements were made on single crystals of the superconducting filled skutterudite series Pr(Os1−x_{1-x}Rux_x)4_4Sb12_{12} down to 0.6 K. Crystalline electric field fits in the normal state produced parameters which were in agreement with previous measurements. Bulk superconductivity was observed for all values of the Ru concentration xx with transition temperatures consistent with previous experiments, confirming a minimum in TcT_{c} at x=0.6x=0.6. The C(T)C(T) data below TcT_{c} appear to be more consistent with power law behavior for x=0x=0 (PrOs4_4Sb12_{12}), and with exponential behavior for 0.05≤x≤0.20.05 \leq x \leq 0.2. An enhanced electronic specific heat coefficient γ\gamma was observed for x≤0.4x \leq 0.4, further supporting x≃0.6x \simeq 0.6 as a critical concentration where the physical properties abruptly change.     Further Studies on the Nitrate Assimilating Power of Soils

    In a paper read at the meeting last year it was pointed out that when a soluble form of organic matter was added to soils which were incubated in tumblers, a considerable quantity of nitrate nitrogen could be used by the micro-organisms of the soil. The amount of nitrate nitrogen assimilated was in a measure determined by the amount of nitrate present at the beginning, the form and amount of organic matter used, and the length of incubation period. Two percent of straw furnished sufficient carbon for the assimilation of 10 mgm. per 100 gms. of soil in one week, and for about 15 mgm. in 3 weeks. Two percent of soluble starch or dextrose permitted the assimilation of about 15 mgm. in 1 week

    The work of many investigators has demonstrated the fact that nitrate nitrogen disappears from soils to which organic materials of a high carbon-nitrogen ratio have been added. Doryland in 1916 claimed that soils have a definite nitrate consuming power and that additions of organic matter such as straw, dextrose, or other soluble sugars stimulated the disappearance of the nitrates. He attributed this disappearance to the fact that the nitrates were assimilated by microorganisms but not lost from the soil

    Lethal Parasites in Oysters from Coastal Georgia with Discussion of Disease and Management Implications

    Extensive mortalities of oysters, Crassostrea virginica, occurred from 1985 through 1987 in coastal waters of Georgia. Fluid thioglycolate cultures of oysters collected from 16 of 17 locations revealed infections by the apicomplexan parasite Perkinsus marinus. An ascetosporan parasite, Haplosporidium nelsoni, was also observed in histopathological examination of oysters from 4 of the locations. While the range of H. nelsoni currently is recognized as the east coast of the United States from Maine to Florida, this is the first report of the parasite in Georgia waters. This paper documents the occurrence of these two lethal parasites in oysters from coastal waters of Georgia, along with potential disease and management implications. Results of an earlier independent and previously unpublished survey are also discussed which document the presence of P. marinus in Georgia as early as 1966

    Socially Optimal Mining Pools

    Mining for Bitcoins is a high-risk high-reward activity. Miners, seeking to reduce their variance and earn steadier rewards, collaborate in pooling strategies where they jointly mine for Bitcoins. Whenever some pool participant is successful, the earned rewards are appropriately split among all pool participants. Currently a dozen of different pooling strategies (i.e., methods for distributing the rewards) are in use for Bitcoin mining. We here propose a formal model of utility and social welfare for Bitcoin mining (and analogous mining systems) based on the theory of discounted expected utility, and next study pooling strategies that maximize the social welfare of miners. Our main result shows that one of the pooling strategies actually employed in practice--the so-called geometric pay pool--achieves the optimal steady-state utility for miners when its parameters are set appropriately. Our results apply not only to Bitcoin mining pools, but any other form of pooled mining or crowdsourcing computations where the participants engage in repeated random trials towards a common goal, and where "partial" solutions can be efficiently verified
