An Act of Courage: Providing Space for African American Graduate Students to Express Their Feelings of Disconnectedness

The purpose of this article is to discuss the lived experiences of African American graduate students (master’s level) enrolled at a predominantly white institution (PWI). I explore the experiences of graduate students lacking connection to their institution. I will also explore how institutional and systemic racism impact creating a space for African American graduate students to persist. I examine how persistence allows for these students to complete their degrees and feel a sense of connectedness to the institution. I will use the television (TV) series A Different World and The Quad to draw comparison and contrast to African American students’ sense of belonging and connectedness. There is a gap that exists within current literature that focuses on master’s level African American learners. Therefore, it is often difficult for the gatekeepers at majority white institutions to recognize this urgent need for change. Students desire student affairs professionals who look like them (value of sameness). This article is intended to provide context for scholars, scholar-practitioners, institutions, and students regarding African American graduate student experiences. For the purpose of this article, Black and African American will be used interchangeably. This is because Black is meant to be inclusive for members of the African Diaspora who identify as African American, African, Afro-Latinx, or Afro-Caribbean

Administrative Effectiveness and Public Administration Practice in Midwestern State Employment Agencies

Researchers have examined the multiple dimensions of unemployment. Performance rates had declined significantly in a majority of CR 5 states in the 3-year period, 2007-2009. What was not known, however, was the effectiveness of the public administration practice in individual state employment agencies when addressing the economic crisis and rising unemployment. Move: We Don\u27t Need To Convince You That Our Oppression is Real

This article will address the lived experiences of Black people (faculty, staff, students, student-athletes) who navigate academia in majority white spaces. Black people have known throughout time that the Black voice is not valued. We constantly find ourselves embattled in our personal lives, at work, and on social media. The constant and incessant need for whiteness to tell us how we should feel, respond, and react to acts of white supremacy, white manning, sexism, and misogynoir are triggering. The system of higher education is a constant reminder that academia exists comfortably in a bubble. A bubble that unless you are bold enough to burst it remains firmly entrenched around the institution. Perpetuating false diversity and inclusion efforts and employing individuals who do not really care about the mattering of Black lives is dangerously problematic. Time\u27s up! Ya\u27ll Don\u27t Hate White Supremacy Enough for Me: How Performative DEI Prevents Anti-Racism and Accountability in Higher Education

Many institutions of higher learning and more specifically predominately white institutions (PWIs) have created divisions, teams, and administrative roles aimed at transforming problematic and racism-centered institutions. However, the teams and leaders almost never have true autonomy or institutional support in creating an environment not centered in whiteness or white feelings but one centered in disruption of the status quo and truly anti-racist. As scholars and practitioners, we find ourselves being requested to tailor our talks or teaching in a way that is digestible for white people. Meanwhile, students of color are being berated at athletic events, in their classes, and on social media by the same individuals we are asked to spare. In order for higher education to truly meet the moment we have to de-center whiteness, white feelings, and white mediocrity as a starting point. We have to consider the more marginalized and how we must better be of service to them

Key role of surface plasmon polaritons in generation of periodic surface structures following single-pulse laser irradiation of a gold step edge

Understanding the mechanisms and controlling the possibilities of surface nanostructuring is of crucial interest for both fundamental science and application perspectives. Here, we report a direct experimental observation of laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS) formed near a predesigned gold step edge following single-pulse femtosecond laser irradiation. Simulation results based on a hybrid atomistic-continuum model fully support the experimental observations. We experimentally detect nanosized surface features with a periodicity of ∼300 nm and heights of a few tens of nanometers.We identify two key components of single-pulse LIPSS formation: excitation of surface plasmon polaritons and material reorganization. Our results lay a solid foundation toward simple and efficient usage of light for innovative material processing technologies

The American Girl Retail Experience

The American Girl brand is characterized by its ability to promote identity development in young girls through play and educational experiences. Due to the accessibility of smart-devices (e.g. mobile and web based technologies) and the frequency of their use, recent trends in toy designs have shown an increase in digital/technology features. Taking this into consideration, American Girl has continuously emphasized doll-centric products and experiences that also satisfy consumer’s digital interests. American Girl’s interactive digital resources include: the entire American Girl website which features a wide selection of Games, Apps, activities, e-cards, the InnerStar University (i.e., an interactive world for My American Girl Dolls and their owners that provides girls with games, advice and new friends) as well as information about how to plan a trip to your local retail store. Again, the inherent theme in each of these digital activities is the doll. American Girl uses doll-centric activities in retail stores to promote the “American Girl” experience. For this project we examined all aspects of the American Girl Retail Experience ranging from making reservations to planning parties, events, and excursions. Our approach to developing this proposal came from observations of the American Girl Place in Chicago, Illinois and the American Girl Store in Orlando, Florida. We also conducted a review of digital resources such as the American Girl website, 2013 Mattel Annual Report, press releases, videos, and Apps available in the iTunes store. The American Girl website provided us with information about all of the current in-store experiences (e.g. book reading, craft making, cookie decorating, hair styling and more) as well as the current list of products and respective pricing. These details strongly influenced the development of our design. Our proposal examined the user experience from the perspective of the performing arts. The proposal outlines the performing arts experience which suggests the need for a performance stage and describes the activities and events that go along with the stage

Reconstruction of Defects by Ultrasonic Testing Using Synthetic Aperture Procedures

The three methods ALOK (Amplitude Time Locus Curves), PHASED ARRAY and LSAFT (Line-Synthetic-Aperture-Focussing-Technique) use the method of synthesizing a large aperture by moving a probe. The result is a high lateral resolution and the capability to focus into the farfield of the probe. As pointed out in Fig.1, a focal probe focusses only in one depth within the near field length. The PHASED ARRAY probe allows to change this focal distance within the near field length electronically. The SAFT-method allows to focus in all depths simultaneously within the near field length which is given not by the probe diameter D but by the synthetic aperture D’

Non-surgical therapy of Peyronie’s disease

Abstract The present paper provides a review of the available non-surgical treatments for Peyronie's disease (PD). A review of published literature on oral, intralesional, external energy and iontophoresis therapies for PD was performed, and the published results of available treatment options reviewed. The authors' recommendations for appropriate non-surgical management of PD are provided. Although there are many published reports that show the efficacy of non-surgical therapies for PD, there is a lack of large scale, multicenter controlled clinical trials, which makes treatment recommendations difficult. Careful review of the literature does suggest that there are treatment options that make scientific sense and appear to stabilize the disease process, reduce deformity, and improve function. Offering no treatment at all will encourage our patients to pursue alternative treatments, which might do harm, and misses the opportunity to do some good. Clearly further work is necessary to develop safe and effective non-surgical treatments for PD

Use of Human Resources in Technical Schools for the Acquisition of Sustainability Competences amongst Students in the South West Region of Cameroon

The study focused on the use of Human Resources in Technical Schools for the Acquisition of Sustainability Competences Amongst Students. The survey research designed was used for the study; the sample population of the study was made up of 530 participants distributed as follows: 315 teachers, 15 administrators and 200 technical students in the south west region of Cameroon. The purposive and the convenient sampling techniques were used to select the above sample of the study. The instruments used for Data collection were; questionnaire, interview and focus group discussion. Test items on the Questionnaire were designed using the four- point likert scale. The Cronbach’s alpha reliability test was above 0.7. Data was analyzed using the statistical package for social sciences (SPSS) version 25. The study found out that: human resource quality had significant effects on the acquisition of sustainability competences. Based on the findings, it was recommended that, more attention be paid to teachers’ quality and their professional development. Also, the different ministries in charge of teacher education should work in collaboration in order to address teachers and students needs of the country
