Who are you talking to? The role of addressee identity in utterance comprehension
Issue online: 30 March 2020Experimental evidence suggests that speaker and addressee quickly adapt to each
other from the earliest moments of sentence processing, and that interlocutor-related
information is rapidly integrated with other sources of nonpragmatic information
(e.g., semantic, morphosyntactic, etc.). These findings have been taken as support
for one-step models of sentence comprehension. The results from the present eventrelated
potential study challenge this theoretical framework providing a case where
discourse level information is integrated only at a late stage of processing, when
morphosyntactic analysis has been already initiated. We considered the case of
Basque allocutive agreement, where information about addressee gender is encoded
in verbal inflection. Two different types of Basque grammatical violations were presented
together with the corresponding control conditions: one could be detected
based on a morphosyntactic mismatch (person agreement violation), while the other
could be detected only if the addressee's gender was considered (allocutive violation).
Morphosyntactic violations elicited greater N400 effects followed by P600
effects, while allocutive violations elicited only P600 effects. These results provide
new constraints to one-step accounts as they represent a case where speakers do not
immediately adjust to the addressee's perspective. We propose that the relevance of
discourse-level information might be a crucial variable to reconcile the dichotomy

The Quiet-Sun Photosphere and Chromosphere
The overall structure and the fine structure of the solar photosphere outside
active regions are largely understood, except possibly important roles of a
turbulent near-surface dynamo at its bottom, internal gravity waves at its top,
and small-scale vorticity. Classical 1D static radiation-escape modelling has
been replaced by 3D time-dependent MHD simulations that come closer to reality.
The solar chromosphere, in contrast, remains ill-understood although its
pivotal role in coronal mass and energy loading makes it a principal research
area. Its fine structure defines its overall structure, so that hard-to-observe
and hard-to-model small-scale dynamical processes are the key to understanding.
However, both chromospheric observation and chromospheric simulation presently
mature towards the required sophistication. The open-field features seem of

Measuring the Hidden Aspects of Solar Magnetism
2008 marks the 100th anniversary of the discovery of astrophysical magnetic
fields, when George Ellery Hale recorded the Zeeman splitting of spectral lines
in sunspots. With the introduction of Babcock's photoelectric magnetograph it
soon became clear that the Sun's magnetic field outside sunspots is extremely
structured. The field strengths that were measured were found to get larger
when the spatial resolution was improved. It was therefore necessary to come up
with methods to go beyond the spatial resolution limit and diagnose the
intrinsic magnetic-field properties without dependence on the quality of the
telescope used. The line-ratio technique that was developed in the early 1970s
revealed a picture where most flux that we see in magnetograms originates in
highly bundled, kG fields with a tiny volume filling factor. This led to
interpretations in terms of discrete, strong-field magnetic flux tubes embedded
in a rather field-free medium, and a whole industry of flux tube models at
increasing levels of sophistication. This magnetic-field paradigm has now been
shattered with the advent of high-precision imaging polarimeters that allow us
to apply the so-called "Second Solar Spectrum" to diagnose aspects of solar
magnetism that have been hidden to Zeeman diagnostics. It is found that the
bulk of the photospheric volume is seething with intermediately strong, tangled
fields. In the new paradigm the field behaves like a fractal with a high degree
of self-similarity, spanning about 8 orders of magnitude in scale size, down to

Androgen Receptor-Target Genes in African American Prostate Cancer Disparities
The incidence and mortality rates of prostate cancer (PCa) are higher in African American (AA) compared to Caucasian American (CA) men. To elucidate the molecular mechanisms underlying PCa disparities, we employed an integrative approach combining gene expression profiling and pathway and promoter analyses to investigate differential transcriptomes and deregulated signaling pathways in AA versus CA cancers. A comparison of AA and CA PCa specimens identified 1,188 differentially expressed genes. Interestingly, these transcriptional differences were overrepresented in signaling pathways that converged on the androgen receptor (AR), suggesting that the AR may be a unifying oncogenic theme in AA PCa. Gene promoter analysis revealed that 382 out of 1,188 genes contained cis-acting AR-binding sequences. Chromatin immunoprecipitation confirmed STAT1, RHOA, ITGB5, MAPKAPK2, CSNK2A,1 and PIK3CB genes as novel AR targets in PCa disparities. Moreover, functional screens revealed that androgen-stimulated AR binding and upregulation of RHOA, ITGB5, and PIK3CB genes were associated with increased invasive activity of AA PCa cells, as siRNA-mediated knockdown of each gene caused a loss of androgen-stimulated invasion. In summation, our findings demonstrate that transcriptional changes have preferentially occurred in multiple signaling pathways converging (“transcriptional convergence”) on AR signaling, thereby contributing to AR-target gene activation and PCa aggressiveness in AAs
Parity Violation in Elastic Electron-Proton Scattering and the Proton's Strange Magnetic Form Factor
We report a new measurement of the parity-violating asymmetry in elastic
electron scattering from the proton at backward scattering angles. This
asymmetry is sensitive to the strange magnetic form factor of the proton as
well as electroweak axial radiative corrections. The new measurement of A=-4.92
+- 0.61 +- 0.73 ppm provides a significant constraint on these quantities. The
implications for the strange magnetic form factor are discussed in the context

The Color of Childhood: The Role of the Child/Human Binary in the Production of Anti-Black Racism
The binary between the figure of the child and the fully human being is invoked with regularity in analyses of race, yet its centrality to the conception of race has never been fully explored. For most commentators, the figure of the child operates as a metaphoric or rhetorical trope, a non-essential strategic tool in the perpetuation of White supremacy. As I show in the following, the child/human binary does not present a contingent or merely rhetorical construction but, rather, a central feature of racialization. Where Black peoples are situated as objects of violence it is often precisely because Blackness has been identified with childhood and childhood is historically identified as the archetypal site of naturalized violence and servitude. I proceed by offering a historical account of how Black peoples came to inherit the subordination and dehumanization of European childhood and how White youth were subsequently spared through their partial categorization as adults
