    Dashboard for the Management and Acceptance of Customer Orders

    Background: This paper focuses on activities related to Customer Orders Management withing an auto components plant in the Automotive Industry. The main challenge was highlighted: customers don’t always regard the flexibility rules agreed with the company. Hence, planners must decide if variation in ordered quantity can be accepted in the forecast period or if adjusting is necessary. Objectives: The purpose was not only to streamline the decision-making process in the planning team but also to provide essential tools for the execution of their daily tasks – a visual and interactive dashboard to assess whether variations in customer orders were within the limits agreed with the company. Methods/Approach: Following Lean information management and business intelligence principles, a thorough process analysis was carried out, centralized and standardized reports were created that served as databases, and the dashboard was developed. Results: The proposed tool allowed reductions from 3,5h per week, spent mainly on collecting data, calculating variations, and selecting and adjusting the flexibility limits, to 0,2h a day per planner. Conclusions: Besides streamlining planners’ daily activities, main contributions regard the promotion of digital transformation, data-driven decision-making, and an automated record of customer order variations that could easily be adapted to suppliers

    A multivariate approach for multi-step demand forecasting in assembly industries: Empirical evidence from an automotive supply chain

    PreprintDemand forecasting works as a basis for operating, business and production planning decisions in many supply chain contexts. Yet, how to accurately predict the manufacturer's demand for components in the presence of end-customer demand uncertainty remains poorly understood. Assigning the proper order quantities of components to suppliers thus becomes a nontrivial task, with a significant impact on planning, capacity and inventory-related costs. This paper introduces a multivariate approach to predict manufacturer's demand for components throughout multiple forecast horizons using different leading indicators of demand shifts. We compare the autoregressive integrated moving average model with exogenous inputs (ARIMAX) with Machine Learning (ML) models. Using a real case study, we empirically evaluate the forecasting and supply chain performance of the multivariate regression models over the component's life-cycle. The experiments show that the proposed multivariate approach provides superior forecasting and inventory performance compared with traditional univariate benchmarks. Moreover, it reveals applicable throughout the component's life-cycle, not just to a single stage. Particularly, we found that demand signals at the beginning of the life-cycle are predicted better by the ARIMAX model, but it is outperformed by ML-based models in later life-cycle stages.INCT-EN - Instituto Nacional de Ciência e Tecnologia para Excitotoxicidade e Neuroproteção(UIDB/00319/2020

    MarinEye - A tool for marine monitoring

    This work presents an autonomous system for marine integrated physical-chemical and biological monitoring – the MarinEye system. It comprises a set of sensors providing diverse and relevant information for oceanic environment characterization and marine biology studies. It is constituted by a physicalchemical water properties sensor suite, a water filtration and sampling system for DNA collection, a plankton imaging system and biomass assessment acoustic system. The MarinEye system has onboard computational and logging capabilities allowing it either for autonomous operation or for integration in other marine observing systems (such as Observatories or robotic vehicles. It was designed in order to collect integrated multi-trophic monitoring data.     Breast cancer is a health problem that affects individual life quality and the family system. It is the most frequent type of cancer in women, but men are also affected. As an integrative approach, comparative oncology offers an opportunity to learn more about natural cancers in different species. Methods based on Raman spectroscopy have shown significant potential in the study of the human breast through the fingerprinting of biological tissue, which provides valuable information that can be used to identify, characterize and discriminate structures in breast tissue, in both healthy and carcinogenic environments. One of the most important applications of Raman spectroscopy in medical diagnosis is the characterization of microcalcifications, which are highly important diagnostic indicators of breast tissue diseases. Raman spectroscopy has been used to analyze the chemical composition of microcalcifications. These occur in benign and malignant lesions in the human breast, and Raman helps to discriminate microcalcifications as type I and type II according to their composition. This paper demonstrates the recent progress in understanding how this vibrational technique can discriminate through the fingerprint regions of lesions in unstained histology sections from canine mammary glands

    The technological evolution of the past fifty years has provided Humanity the contact with the last frontier of knowledge: space. An unknown world, explored by a small group of nations, which has become crucial to understanding who we are and where we come from. Space assets in recent years have opened the way to a digital society, shaped by the rapid exchange of information, whose means are mostly in space. A place of fascination and curiosity, restricted to a few people in these decades, which may soon be changing. This essay addresses some legal issues concerning the private exploration of space. Liability on space tourism is the core of this investigation, focusing on the comprehension of the international legal framework and its connection with the states national law. In particular, the study of the main international treaties, the U.S. legal system of space law and the developments in Europe are the fundamental tools of the current analysis, not forgetting the point of view of a possible international harmonization. Besides the needed theoretical context on the evolution of space law and a brief approach of the technical matters of the current aerospace engineering, the goal is to examine the characteristics of international space law and its relation with the new private actors, responsible for providing suborbital flights, operating in a near future. Within these circumstances, given the economic potential of the growing private space industry, it is essential to discuss the legal aspects of a spatial regulation. Being liability, undoubtedly, the emerging issue in the legal debate on this topic, it is important to safeguard the interests of the operators, States and, above all, future space tourists.A evolução tecnológica dos últimos cinquenta anos proporcionou à Humanidade o contacto com a derradeira fronteira do conhecimento: o espaço. Um mundo desconhecido, explorado por um conjunto restrito de nações, que se tornou fulcral para compreendermos quem somos e de onde vimos. Os recursos espaciais, nos anos recentes, abriram caminho a uma sociedade digital, moldada pela rápida troca de informação, cujos meios estão, na sua maioria, no espaço. Um local de fascínio e curiosidade, restrito a poucas pessoas nestas dezenas de anos, o que pode, em breve, vir a mudar. O presente trabalho debruça-se sobre algumas das questões jurídicas em torno da exploração privada do espaço. A responsabilidade civil no turismo espacial é o ponto central da investigação, procurando compreender qual o enquadramento jurídico internacional e qual a sua conexão com o direito interno dos Estados. Em concreto, o estudo dos principais tratados internacionais, a realidade jurídico-espacial norte-americana e os desenvolvimentos a nível europeu estão no cerne da análise que aqui se propõe, não descurando o ponto de vista de uma possível harmonização internacional. Para tal, além da necessária contextualização teórica sobre a evolução do direito espacial e de uma breve abordagem às questões técnicas da engenharia aeroespacial atual, o objetivo passa por examinar as características do direito espacial internacional e como se coadunam com os novos protagonistas privados, responsáveis pela oferta de voos suborbitais para fins turísticos, a realizar num futuro próximo. Nestas circunstâncias, face ao potencial económico da crescente indústria espacial privada, é imperativo discutir os contornos jurídicos de uma regulação espacial que salvaguarde os interesses dos operadores, dos Estados e, sobretudo, dos futuros turistas espaciais, sendo certo que a responsabilidade civil é, sem dúvida, a questão emergente no debate jurídico sobre este tema
