    Linking food web functioning and habitat diversity for an ecosystem based management: A Mediterranean lagoon case-study

    We propose a modelling approach relating the functioning of a transitional ecosystem with the spatial extension of its habitats. A test case is presented for the lagoon of Venice, discussing the results in the context of the application of current EU directives. The effects on food web functioning due to changes related to manageable and unmanageable drivers were investigated. The modelling procedure involved the use of steady-state food web models and network analysis, respectively applied to estimate the fluxes of energy associated with trophic interactions, and to compute indices of food web functioning. On the long term (hundred years) temporal scale, the model indicated that the expected loss of salt marshes will produce further changes at the system level, with a lagoon showing a decrease in the energy processing efficiency. On the short term scale, simulation results indicated that fishery management accompanied by seagrass restoration measures would produce a slight transition towards a more healthy system, with higher energy cycling, and maintaining a good balance between processing efficiency and resilience. Scenarios presented suggest that the effectiveness of short term management strategies can be better evaluated when contextualized in the long term trends of evolution of a system. We also remark the need for further studying the relationship between habitat diversity and indicators of food web functioning

    Fish response to multiple anthropogenic stressors in mediterranean coastal lagoons: A comparative study of the role of different management strategies

    Transitional waters are among the most productive ecosystems of the world and their biotic communities show high diversity and complex mechanisms of self-regulation that provide valuable ecosystem services and societal goods and benefits. In this work a comparison of the fish assemblages of three non-tidal Mediterranean coastal lagoons is carried out in order to evaluate the impacts of alternative management strategies. The anthropogenic pressures acting on the lagoons were quantified by means of categorical indicators, while the characteristics of the fish assemblages were summarized in multi-metric indices (MMIs). Two MMIs were developed using data collected with a beach seine net and with fyke nets, following an empirical approach that selects, from a pool of 73 metrics, the combination that maximizes the MMI/pressure relationship. The two MMIs include four metrics each, most of which are based on feeding mode functional guilds and habitat use functional guilds, and they are sensitive to anthropogenic pressures. The human activities directly or indirectly affecting water quality are the ones that most influence the fish assemblage, while the presence of artisanal fisheries, a typical and relevant resource use in these lagoons, seems to play a beneficial role. Lagoon fisheries management relies on the maintenance of infrastructures that guarantee the hydraulic functioning of the lagoon, thus ensuring exchanges with the adjacent coastal sea, and therefore indirectly contributing to the habitat quality

    Design, synthesis and application of luminescent rhenium complexes in cell imaging

    This thesis describes the development of a new variety of lumophores, in particular luminescent rhenium(I) complexes of the type Re(bisim)(CO)3L n+, where bisim represents a bisimine derivative, e.g. bipyridine, and Lisa pyridine derivative (n = 1) or a chloride (n = 0), suitable for specific cell imaging and whose modified photophysical properties overcome some of the problems associated with traditional imaging agents (small Stokes shift, short lifetimes, etc). Specifically the successful synthesis and photophysical studies of a chemical model to validate the concept of a membrane permeable cell-imaging device, fac-Re0)ipyXCO)3(PyCH2COO(CH2)3OTBD) +, are presented. Further investigations towards and improved cell imaging agent, considering different issues like water solubility, lipophilicity and cell encapsulation rate, are then undertaken. Consequently, a new range of water soluble rhenium complexes, ykc- Re(bisimXCO)3(L) n" where bisim is a water soluble bathophenanthroline and L is a pyridine derivative (n = 2) or a chloride (n = 1), as well as a variety of novel yac-Re(bisimXCO)3Cl complexes, where bisim is a terpyridine derivative bearing a self destruction device which can be triggered by nitroreductase, are also presented. Additionally, the synthesis and structural description of a trinuclear rhenium complex is reported, along with a discussion of its use in inclusion experiments and attempts at analogue formation. The design and synthesis of a thiol selective luminescent rhenium complex, fac-Re(bipyXCO)3(PyCH2Cl) +, is described, along with the demonstration of its thiol selectivity both in vitro and in vivo as demonstrated by specific mitochondrial localization. Finally, studies of membrane permeability in liposome models, cellular uptake and localization in different cells such as Spironucleous vortens, yeast cells and human breast cancer cells of a variety of rhenium complexes above cited are also reported. These results combine to demonstrate the promising future of this new class of imaging probes as specific cell imaging agents and therefore, this work represents the initial step in the growing area of the development of transition metal based imaging agents.EThOS - Electronic Theses Online ServiceGBUnited Kingdo

    Multidimensional natal isotopic niches refect migratory patterns in birds

    7openInternationalBothNaturally occurring stable isotope ratios in animal tissues allow estimation of species trophic position and ecological niche. Measuring multiple isotopes of migratory species along flyway bottlenecks offers the opportunity to sample multiple populations and species whose tissues carry information at continental scales. We measured δ2H, δ18O, δ13C, δ15N in juvenile feathers of 21 bird species captured at a migratory bottleneck in the Italian Alps. We examined if trends in individual isotopes reflected known migratory strategies and whether dietary (δ13C–δ15N) and spatially-explicit breeding origin (δ2H–δ18O) niche breadth (NB) differed among long-distance trans-Saharan (TS), short-distance (IP) and irruptive (IR) intra-Palearctic migrants, and whether they correlated with reported populations long-term trends. In both TS and IP groups, species δ2H declined with capture date, indicating that northern populations reached the stopover site later in the season, following a Type-I migration strategy. Values of δ2H indicated that breeding range of TS migrants extended farther north than IP and IR migrants. The breeding season was longer for IP migrants whose δ13C and δ15N values declined and increased, respectively, with time of capture. Average species dietary NB did not differ among migratory groups, but TS migrants displayed wider breeding origin niches, suggesting that long-distant migration is linked to broader ecological niches. Isotope origin NB well reflected species geographic range extent, while dietary NB did not correlate with literature accounts of species’ diet. We found no relationship between species breeding NB and population trends in Europe, suggesting that conditions in the breeding grounds, as inferred by stable isotopes, are not the only determinant of species’ long-term persistence.     Examining the association between depression and seizures amongst adults with epilepsy : a longitudinal analysis

    This programme of work examined the links between psychopathology and seizures for adults with epilepsy using longitudinal data from two datasets and employing state-of the-art analytic approaches to tease apart inter-relationships. In the first study, using path analysis to examine direction of effects, a bi-directional relationship between seizure frequency and depression scores was confirmed. That is, not only did seizure frequency influence depression scores longitudinally and concurrently, but that depression scores also influenced seizure frequency equivalently. The second study employed a latent variable structural equation modelling approach to examine moderation and mediation and prediction of change in variable scores over time. In this study although anxiety, perceived stress and depression all separately influenced changes in seizures (frequency and recency), depression mediated the relationship between both anxiety and stress with seizures. The third study used a latent growth curve approach to focus on patterns of change within individuals. Trajectories of change in depression scores for individuals over time were examined as well as factors predicting this variation. This study found that seizure recency was a significant predictor of the individual differences in baseline depression scores as well as of the changes in depression scores over time for individuals with epilepsy. The implications of these results are that both effective management of seizures and depression are essential for people with epilepsy. Given that the current focus of clinical management strategies for people with epilepsy is on seizure management, this research suggests the importance of also identifying and managing depression amongst people with epilepsy. Strategies to implement this would include increased awareness of the importance of depression amongst clinical staff, improved screening for depression amongst people with epilepsy (for example by using depression screening questionnaires such as the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale), implementing effective treatment (such as by using antidepressants or cognitive behaviour therapy) if depression is identified. Future aims would include confirming these findings using alternative designs, for example a randomised trial to investigate whether these links between depression and seizures arise because of a common antecedent factor or shared risk factors and examine whether other factors (such as gender) influence the relationships observed between depression and seizure outcomes.EThOS - Electronic Theses Online ServiceGBUnited Kingdo

    Ecosystem functioning and ecological status in the Venice lagoon, which relationships?

    The implementation of management measures for improving the ecological status within an Ecosystem Based Management approach represents one the of the main challenges in coastal and transitional water environments. In general terms, ecological status and ecosystem functioning are expected to be positively associated, being good ecological processes a sort of prerequisite for the ecosystem health, but often relationships between ecosystem functioning indicators and the metrics used to define ecological status resulted to be rather puzzling. Moreover, the Biological Quality Elements (BQEs) do not show a consistent response to the changes in the ecosystem. This situation does not allow to recognize where interventions are really needed, hindering the definition of effective management strategies. In the present paper, a spatially explicit food web model of the Venice lagoon (with the resolution of 300 m) is used to simulate changes in the ecological status and related them to different management scenarios. Functional changes in the food web were investigated by comparing values of a set of 12 indicators derived by the ecological network analysis. In general, results highlighted on one hand the need for more discussion about the implementation of the WFD, at least in complex and spatially heterogeneous transitional waters environments, as the Venice lagoon; on the other, results remark the opportunity to support the BQEs monitoring with an ecological modelling approach. These models are certainly not the panacea for addressing questions about the environmental management, as they have inherent uncertainties (on parameters, structure, processes etc.); however, they can prove useful for selecting among different policy choices, since they offer the opportunity to simulate the mean effects, preliminarily verifying the efficacy of the proposed interventions

    In-situ health monitoring of IGBT power modules in EV applications

    Power electronics are an enabling technology and play a critical role in the establishment of an environmentally-friendly and sustainable low carbon economy. The electrification of passenger vehicles is one way of achieving this goal. It is well acknowledged that Electric vehicles (EVs) have inherent advantages over the conventional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles owing to the absence of emissions, high efficiency, and quiet and smooth operation. Over the last 20 years, EVs have improved significantly in their system integration, dynamic performance and cost. It has attracted much attention in research communities as well as in the market. In 2011 electric vehicle sales were estimated to reach about 20,000 units worldwide, increasing to more than 500,000 units by 2015 and 1.3 million by 2020 which accounts for 1.8 per cent of the total number of passenger vehicles expected to be sold that year. In general, electric vehicles use electric motors for traction drive, power converters for energy transfer and control, and batteries, fuel cells, ultracapacitors, or flywheels for energy storage. These are the core elements of the electric power drive train and thus are desired to provide high reliability over the lifetime of the vehicle. One of the vulnerable components in an electric power drive train is the IGBT switching devices in an inverter. During the operation, IGBT power modules will experience high mechanical and thermal stresses which lead to bond wire lift-off and solder joint fatigue faults. Theses stresses can lead to malfunctions of the IGBT power modules. A short-circuit or open-circuit in any of the power modules may result in an instantaneous loss of traction power, which is dangerous for the driver and other road users. These reliability issues are very complex in their nature and demand for the development of analytical models and experimental validation. This work is set out to develop an online measurement technique for health monitoring of IGBT and freewheeling diodes inside the power modules. The technique can provide an early warning prior to a power device failure. Bond wire lift-off and solder fatigue are the two most frequently occurred faults in power electronic modules. The former increases the forward voltage drop across the terminals of the power device while the latter increase the thermal resistance of the solder layers. As a result, bond wire lift-off can be detected by a highly sensitive and fast operating in-situ monitoring circuit. Solder joint fatigue is detected by measuring the thermal impedance of the power modules. This thesis focuses on the design and optimisation of the in-situ health monitoring circuit in an attempt to reducing noise, temperature variations and measurement uncertainties. Experimental work is carried out on a set of various IGBT power modules that have been modified to account for different testing requirements. Then the lifetime of the power module can be estimated on this basis.     Conservation actions for restoring the coastal lagoon habitats: Strategy and multidisciplinary approach of LIFE Lagoon Refresh

    The Habitat Directive of European Union lists Costal Lagoons (habitat code 1150*) among priority habitats because they are in danger of disappearance. Natural ecosystems may recover from anthropogenic perturbations; however, the recovery can follow natural restoration or it can be redirected through ecological restoration by anthropogenic intervention. Accordingly, by collecting the available theoretical indications for restoration of estuarine and coastal areas, a methodological approach was detailed andit can be summarised into five issues: (i) Environmental context from which it began; (ii) Desired state to be achieved; (iii) Policies and socio-economic context; (iv) Typology of recovery and/or improvement of habitats and ecosystems; and (v) Methods for monitoring the impact of the project. The project strategy, management and measures of LIFE Lagoon Refresh were also presented and discussed, as a case study for the implementation of the multidisciplinary approach for restoration ecology in transitional waters. The project takes place in the northern Venice Lagoon (Italy), started in 2017 and it lasts 5 years. In the Venice Lagoon, since the 20th century, strong reductions of the typical salinity gradient of buffer areas between lagoon and mainland, and of reedbed extensions have occurred due to historic human interventions, with negative consequences on coastal lagoon habitats. To improve the conservation status of habitats and biodiversity of the area, the LIFE Lagoon Refresh project included several conservative actions, which are (i) the diversion of a freshwater flow from the Sile River into the lagoon; (ii) the restoration of intertidal morphology, through biodegradable structures; (iii) the reed and aquatic angiosperm transplantations with the involvement of local fishermen and hunters, and (iv) the reduction of hunting and fishing pressures in the intervention area. To achieve the restoration of the lagoon environment, the strategy of the project covered a combination of different aspects and tools, such as planning activities, through the involvement of local Institutions and communities; stakeholder's involvement to increase awareness of environment conservation and socioeconomic value improvement; an ecological engineering approach; numerical models as supporting tool for planning and managing of conservation actions; environmental monitoring performed before and after the conservation actions
