Network research by data graph management for capacity development and knowledge building in sustainable sanitation
The Millennium Development Goals (MDG) provide clear targets by 2015 and it turns out that sanitation is by far the largest of all the MDG targets affecting about 40% of the global population. The objective of the Sustainable Sanitation Alliance (SuSanA) is to show how Sustainable Sanitation projects should be planned with participation of stakeholders through capacity development activities. Developing the capacity of societies to collaboratively learn through change and uncertainty is fundamental for sustainability science. The aim of this contribution it is to analyze the role of graph database management (GDM) for improve capacity development and knowledge building in the Sustainable Sanitation framework. We provide a theoretical model with four features of network research: link analysis, social network, pattern recognition and keyword search that we illustrate with some examples. Network research allows us to observe how the information in Sustainable Sanitation is scattered properly through the structure and also to detect the emergencies, objections and other characteristics of the network.Peer Reviewe
A circular commons for digital devices: tools and services in ereuse.org
Circular economies are particularly relevant in the context of digital devices or electric and electronic equipment (EEE). Many digital devices built using scarce and potentially toxic materials have a too-short life, instead of being repaired or reused. In addition, informal recycling of electronics in the developed and developing world has emerged as a new global environmental concern. We describe the dimensions of the problem, the challenge to move to a circular economy, and the ecology for digital devices as well as how this depends on the traceability of devices and cooperation among all stakeholders locally and globally. Moreover we examine the need for support mechanisms to facilitate, standardise, and reduce the transaction cost of the processes and increase their added value. We present eReuse.org, a set of open-source tools, procedures, open data, and services organised as a common-pool resource (CPR) to reach the circular economy of electronics through promoting reuse and ensuring traceability until recycling. Further, eReuse.org envisions empowering and engaging people around the world to create local communities that bootstrap electronic reuse and to support the development of a globally recognised reuse quality and traceability standard.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft
TXT as a vehicle for service learning
Service-learning is a method of teaching, learning and reflecting that combines
academic classroom curriculum with meaningful service throughout the community.
As a teaching methodology, it falls under the philosophy of experiential education.
More specifically, it integrates meaningful community service with instruction and
reflection to enrich the learning experience, teach civic responsibility, encourage
lifelong civic engagement, and strengthen communities for the common good.
Technology for everybody (TXT) is an association of people from the computer
science and telecommunication schools at UPC. The main goal is to share our
knowledge in Information and Communication Technology to communities that
may benefit. In the last few years we have seen how technology has changed our
everyday life and has became an inner part of a modern society. Lack of access to
this knowledge enlarges the distance between communities. In this context, people
in TXT aim to narrow the gap by providing technical knowledge to nongovernmental
social institutions where this information could be useful.
Another important task for TXT is building student's community awareness of
international and local cooperation. The association tries to engage students into
taking civil responsibilities, at the same time their learning experience are enriched.
To that aim TxT runs the reuse workshop (among other projects); this initiative is
managed by the Center of Cooperation and Development (CCD) the Technical
University in Catalonia (UPC) and the association Technology for Everybody
(TXT). It is a hands-on session where participants learn how to repair a computer.Peer Reviewe
Virtual interactive innovations applied for digital urban transformations : mixed approach
© 2018 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V. This is an open access article under the CC BY licenseThe cities in which we live are changing rapidly, presenting the scenery to debate future visions of transformative designs and its impact on the city. In order to take advantage of the changes and opportunities offered by the inclusion of digital technologies, an accommodation of the digital transformation into the visualization of Urbanism is required. It is a challenge for organizations and society to question the status quo and experiment often. The discussion about the increasing integration of digital technologies in urban spaces involves a number of questions relating to the complex processes of transformation that impact cities, like economic, social, political, and environmental. The main goal of the paper is to present the use of Digital Transformation in processes of urban design through technological innovation in which the diverse forms of active citizenship operate from below as agents of innovation, inclusion and social development. The results showed that it is possible to empower Digital Transformation –as for example the use Augmented and Virtual Reality (AR/VR) systems in collaborative urban design– to improve public motivation, implication, and satisfaction in urban decision-making processes.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version
Peer Reviewe

Teaching and Learning Urbanism in Architecture Schools
How are approaches and tools changing to deal with critical territorial challenges,
particularly risks associated with climate change, the spatial dimension of the
economy and the networked metropolitan region? Are urbanists equipped to lead
solutions to our society's challenges to sustainability? Learning is a puzzling act, and
the learning of a discipline like Urbanism is a particular one. This is because of the
interdisciplinarity that this field requires in actual society. In many Schools of
Architecture, it is find the nostalgia of the urbanist locked in a knowledge and skills
that hardly seems to be practical versus the panorama of uncertainties and new
possibilities in which we live. Therefore, it is appropriate to face how the urbanist
education is responding to the constant changes and challenges. Studying the current
educational processes involves the theoretical contextualization of the educational act,
the educational discourses and a revision of the evolution of its structure. This
research focus first, on a historical journey to discern its evolution, to know what was
the main necessity and the competences needed for the practice. Second, a
comparative study is made of different study plans to overview of how Urbanism is
taught in different regions, the approaches and structure. Third, it is concluded which
are the gaps, difficulties and opportunities. The relevance of this study is the
redefinition of the studies of Urbanism in relation to the demands of society, the
environment and the progress of pertinent situations
eReuse poster: the circular economy of digital devices
eReuse is an initiative and action-research project that since 2015 has iterated over research and activism to understand, develop, apply to communities, evaluate and scale-up the circular economy of digital devices. The work, in partnership with diverse organisations, has contributed to the transition towards a circular economy of digital devices that contributes effectively to sustainable development. This work was partially funded by the Spanish Government under contracts PID2019-106774RB-C21, and PCI2019-111851-2 (LeadingEdge Chist-era), and the Generalitat de Catalunya as Consolidated Research Group 2017-SGR-990, the NGI DLT4EU, NGI Policy in Practice, NGI Atlantic projects, Subtract (Interreg Europe), the Association for Progressive Communications (APC), and the Waste Agency of the Catalan government.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft
