    The effect of pre-treatment psychoeducation on eating disorder pathology among patients with anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa

    Pre-treatment psychoeducation can be effective for bulimic groups, but little is known about its effect on patients with anorexia nervosa. This study investigated the impact of a pre-treatment psychoeducational intervention on outpatients with diagnoses of full or atypical anorexia nervosa (N = 54) or bulimia nervosa/atypical eating disorder at a normal weight (N = 43). Each attended a four-session psychoeducational group whilst awaiting outpatient treatment. They completed measures of eating and personality disorder pathology pre-intervention, repeating the measures of eating pathology post-intervention. Effectiveness was tested for each diagnostic group using intention-to-treat analyses. Results confirm that such psychoeducational groups reduce unhealthy eating attitudes among bulimic patients, regardless of initial levels of eating and personality pathology. In contrast, the groups were not effective for anorexia nervosa sufferers. Such groups should be considered routinely during waiting periods for bulimia nervosa treatment, but further research is needed to determine how to help anorexia nervosa patients at this stage

    In and out and out again: The travails of Brazil as a security provider in Africa

    The story of Brazil as a contemporary security actor in Africa can prove a peculiar one. Marked by quick gains and an equally quick recognition over a short period of time, it has also been followed by an equally quick turnaround which has led, as of 2020, to a visible disengagement on the ground. We explore the main travails in this domain, which have compromised much of the gains previously obtained throughout the continent. The chapter begins with a general balance of the progress achieved between 2003 and 2016, followed by the highlights of the recent downturn. We then analyze a specific sub-area, namely, the inroads carried out at the defence industry level, in order to showcase the promises and contradictions often associated to what the country has offered across the Atlantic. We conclude by presenting some opportunities for a new pickup of Brazilian interest in the middle and long run

    Vascular endothelial growth factor expression is independent of hypoxia in human malignant glioma spheroids and tumours

    We recently showed that severe hypoxia was not universally present adjacent to necrosis in human glioma xenografts and spheroids established from the M059K, M006, M006X, M006XLo and M010b cell lines. Using these glioma models, we wished to test whether oxygen serves as a regulator of cellular VEGF expression in situ. In situ hybridization (ISH) and immunohistochemistry (IHC) were used to detect vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) mRNA and protein expression in sections of glioma xenografts and spheroids in which hypoxic regions and regions with well-oxygenated necrosis were identified on contiguous sections by use of the hypoxia-specific marker,3H-misonidazole. Independent validation of the presence of radiobiologically hypoxic cells in M006 xenografts was undertaken using the comet assay. Northern blotting analyses of monolayer cells demonstrated significant up-regulation of VEGF mRNA in the M006X line at oxygen concentrations of 6% and below. ISH analysis of VEGF mRNA showed unexpectedly strong staining for VEGF mRNA across the entire viable rim of M006X and M006XLo glioma spheroids. Similarly, in virtually all xenograft tumours of the M059K, M006 and M010b lines, VEGF ISH showed similar staining across all regions of healthy cells up to the border of necrosis. Only in one M006X tumour was there a suggestion of increased VEGF expression in cells adjacent to necrosis. IHC for VEGF showed good concordance with the ISH results. IHC analysis of the VEGF receptor flt-1 showed strong tumour cell staining in M006XLo glioma cells. In human glioma spheroids and xenograft tumours, regions of severe hypoxia do not correspond to areas of up-regulated VEGF expression; in fact, VEGF expression is quite uniform. Furthermore, this and our previous study demonstrate that levels of VEGF expression vary among sublines (M006, M006X and M006XLo) derived from a single human glioma specimen. © 2000 Cancer Research Campaig

    Teleportation, Braid Group and Temperley--Lieb Algebra

    We explore algebraic and topological structures underlying the quantum teleportation phenomena by applying the braid group and Temperley--Lieb algebra. We realize the braid teleportation configuration, teleportation swapping and virtual braid representation in the standard description of the teleportation. We devise diagrammatic rules for quantum circuits involving maximally entangled states and apply them to three sorts of descriptions of the teleportation: the transfer operator, quantum measurements and characteristic equations, and further propose the Temperley--Lieb algebra under local unitary transformations to be a mathematical structure underlying the teleportation. We compare our diagrammatical approach with two known recipes to the quantum information flow: the teleportation topology and strongly compact closed category, in order to explain our diagrammatic rules to be a natural diagrammatic language for the teleportation.Comment: 33 pages, 19 figures, latex.
