    Awareness, interest, and preferences of primary care providers in using point-of-care cancer screening technology

    Well-developed point-of-care (POC) cancer screening tools have the potential to provide better cancer care to patients in both developed and developing countries. However, new medical technology will not be adopted by medical providers unless it addresses a population’s existing needs and end-users’ preferences. The goals of our study were to assess primary care providers’ level of awareness, interest, and preferences in using POC cancer screening technology in their practice and to provide guidelines to biomedical engineers for future POC technology development. A total of 350 primary care providers completed a one-time self-administered online survey, which took approximately 10 minutes to complete. A $50 Amazon gift card was given as an honorarium for the first 100 respondents to encourage participation. The description of POC cancer screening technology was provided in the beginning of the survey to ensure all participants had a basic understanding of what constitutes POC technology. More than half of the participants (57%) stated that they heard of the term “POC technology” for the first time when they took the survey. However, almost all of the participants (97%) stated they were either “very interested” (68%) or “somewhat interested” (29%) in using POC cancer screening technology in their practice. Demographic characteristics such as the length of being in the practice of medicine, the percentage of patients on Medicaid, and the average number of patients per day were not shown to be associated with the level of interest in using POC. These data show that there is a great interest in POC cancer screening technology utilization among this population of primary care providers and vast room for future investigations to further understand the interest and preferences in using POC cancer technology in practice.     Optimal inverter logic gate using 10-nm double gate-all-around (DGAA) transistor with asymmetric channel width

    We investigate the electrical characteristics of a double-gate-all-around (DGAA) transistor with an asymmetric channel width using three-dimensional device simulation. The DGAA structure creates a siliconnanotube field-effect transistor (NTFET) with a core-shell gate architecture, which can solve the problem of loss of gate controllability of the channel and provides improved short-channel behavior. The channel width asymmetry is analyzed on both sides of the terminals of the transistors, i.e., source and drain. In addition, we consider both n-type and p-type DGAA FETs, which are essential to forming a unit logic cell, the inverter. Simulation results reveal that, according to the carrier types, the location of the asymmetry has a different effect on the electrical properties of the devices. Thus, we propose the N/P DGAA FET structure with an asymmetric channel width to form the optimal inverter. Various electrical metrics are analyzed to investigate the benefits of the optimal inverter structure over the conventional inverter structure. Simulation results show that 27% delay and 15% leakage power improvement are enabled in the optimum structure.ope

    The condensin complexes play distinct roles to ensure normal chromosome morphogenesis during meiotic division in Arabidopsis

    Meiosis is a specialized cell division essential for sexual reproduction. During meiosis the chromosomes are highly organized, and correct chromosome architecture is required for faithful segregation of chromosomes at anaphase I and II. Condensin is involved in chromosome organization during meiotic and mitotic cell divisions. Three condensin subunits, AtSMC4 and the condensin I and II specific subunits AtCAP-D2 and AtCAP-D3, respectively, have been studied for their role in meiosis. This has revealed that both the condensin I and condensin II complexes are required to maintain normal structural integrity of the meiotic chromosomes during the two nuclear divisions. Their roles appear functionally distinct in that condensin I is required to maintain normal compaction of the centromeric repeats and 45S rDNA, whereas loss of condensin II was associated with extensive interchromosome connections at metaphase I. Depletion of condensin is also associated with a slight reduction in crossover formation, suggesting a role during meiotic prophase I

    Protection against High-Fat-Diet-Induced Obesity in MDM2 C305F Mice Due to Reduced p53 Activity and Enhanced Energy Expenditure

    The RPL11-MDM2 interaction constitutes a p53 signaling pathway activated by deregulated ribosomal biosynthesis in response to stress. Mice bearing an MDM2C305F mutation that disrupts RPL11-MDM2 binding were analyzed on a high-fat diet (HFD). The Mdm2C305F/C305F mice, although phenotypically indistinguishable from WT mice when fed normal chow, demonstrated decreased fat accumulation along with improved insulin sensitivity and glucose tolerance after prolonged HFD feeding. We found that HFD increases expression of c-MYC and RPL11 in both WT and Mdm2C305F/C305F mice; however, p53 was only induced in WT but not in Mdm2C305F/C305F mice. Reduced p53 activity in HFD-fed Mdm2C305F/C305F mice resulted in higher levels of p53 down-regulated targets GLUT4 and SIRT1, leading to increased biosynthesis of NAD+, and increased energy expenditure. Our study reveals a role for the RPL11-MDM2-p53 pathway in fat storage during nutrient excess and suggests that targeting this pathway may be a potential treatment for obesity

    Controlled Growth, Patterning and Placement of Carbon Nanotube Thin Films

    Controlled growth, patterning and placement of carbon nanotube (CNT) thin films for electronic applications are demonstrated. The density of CNT films is controlled by optimizing the feed gas composition as well as the concentration of growth catalyst in a chemical vapor deposition process. Densities of CNTs ranging from 0.02 CNTs/{\mu}m^2 to 1.29 CNTs/{\mu}m^2 are obtained. The resulting pristine CNT thin films are then successfully patterned using either pre-growth or post-growth techniques. By developing a layered photoresist process that is compatible with ferric nitrate catalyst, significant improvements over popular pre-growth patterning methods are obtained. Limitations of traditional post-growth patterning methods are circumvented by selective transfer printing of CNTs with either thermoplastic or metallic stamps. Resulting as-grown patterns of CNT thin films have edge roughness (< 1 {\mu}m) and resolution (< 5 {\mu}m) comparable to standard photolithography. Bottom gate CNT thin film devices are fabricated with field-effect mobilities up to 20 cm^2/Vs and on/off ratios of the order of 10^3. The patterning and transfer printing methods discussed here have a potential to be generalized to include other nanomaterials in new device configurations

    Intrinsic thermal vibrations of suspended doubly clamped single-wall carbon nanotubes

    We report the observation of thermally driven mechanical vibrations of suspended doubly clamped carbon nanotubes, grown by chemical vapor deposition (CVD). Several experimental procedures are used to suspend carbon nanotubes. The vibration is observed as a blurring in images taken with a scanning electron microscope.     Radio-frequency discharges in Oxygen. Part 1: Modeling

    In this series of three papers we present results from a combined experimental and theoretical effort to quantitatively describe capacitively coupled radio-frequency discharges in oxygen. The particle-in-cell Monte-Carlo model on which the theoretical description is based will be described in the present paper. It treats space charge fields and transport processes on an equal footing with the most important plasma-chemical reactions. For given external voltage and pressure, the model determines the electric potential within the discharge and the distribution functions for electrons, negatively charged atomic oxygen, and positively charged molecular oxygen. Previously used scattering and reaction cross section data are critically assessed and in some cases modified. To validate our model, we compare the densities in the bulk of the discharge with experimental data and find good agreement, indicating that essential aspects of an oxygen discharge are captured.Comment: 11 pages, 10 figure

    Modulational instability of ion-acoustic wave packets in quantum pair-ion plasmas

    Amplitude modulation of quantum ion-acoustic waves (QIAWs) in a quantum electron-pair-ion plasma is studied. It is shown that the quantum coupling parameter HH (being the ratio of the plasmonic energy density to the Fermi energy) is ultimate responsible for the modulational stability of QIAW packets, without which the wave becomes modulational unstable. New regimes for the modulational stability (MS) and instability (MI) are obtained in terms of HH and the positive to negative ion density ratio β\beta. The growth rate of MI is obtained, the maximum value of which increases with β\beta and decreases with HH. The results could be important for understanding the origin of modulated QIAW packets in the environments of dense astrophysical objects, laboratory negative ion plasmas as well as for the next generation laser solid density plasma experiments.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures (to appear in Astrophysics and Space Science
