Breadboard linear array scan imager using LSI solid-state technology
The performance of large scale integration photodiode arrays in a linear array scan (pushbroom) breadboard was evaluated for application to multispectral remote sensing of the earth's resources. The technical approach, implementation, and test results of the program are described. Several self scanned linear array visible photodetector focal plane arrays were fabricated and evaluated in an optical bench configuration. A 1728-detector array operating in four bands (0.5 - 1.1 micrometer) was evaluated for noise, spectral response, dynamic range, crosstalk, MTF, noise equivalent irradiance, linearity, and image quality. Other results include image artifact data, temporal characteristics, radiometric accuracy, calibration experience, chip alignment, and array fabrication experience. Special studies and experimentation were included in long array fabrication and real-time image processing for low-cost ground stations, including the use of computer image processing. High quality images were produced and all objectives of the program were attained
Coupling nonpolar and polar solvation free energies in implicit solvent models
Recent studies on the solvation of atomistic and nanoscale solutes indicate
that a strong coupling exists between the hydrophobic, dispersion, and
electrostatic contributions to the solvation free energy, a facet not
considered in current implicit solvent models. We suggest a theoretical
formalism which accounts for coupling by minimizing the Gibbs free energy of
the solvent with respect to a solvent volume exclusion function. The resulting
differential equation is similar to the Laplace-Young equation for the
geometrical description of capillary interfaces, but is extended to microscopic
scales by explicitly considering curvature corrections as well as dispersion
and electrostatic contributions. Unlike existing implicit solvent approaches,
the solvent accessible surface is an output of our model. The presented
formalism is illustrated on spherically or cylindrically symmetrical systems of
neutral or charged solutes on different length scales. The results are in
agreement with computer simulations and, most importantly, demonstrate that our
method captures the strong sensitivity of solvent expulsion and dewetting to
the particular form of the solvent-solute interactions.Comment: accpted in J. Chem. Phy

Seidel elements and mirror transformations
The goal of this article is to give a precise relation between the mirror
symmetry transformation of Givental and the Seidel elements for a smooth
projective toric variety with nef. We show that the Seidel elements
entirely determine the mirror transformation and mirror coordinates.Comment: 36 pages. We corrected several issues as pointed out by the refere
Hodge Dual for Soldered Bundles
In order to account for all possible contractions allowed by the presence of
the solder form, a generalized Hodge dual is defined for the case of soldered
bundles. Although for curvature the generalized dual coincides with the usual
one, for torsion it gives a completely new dual definition. Starting from the
standard form of a gauge lagrangian for the translation group, the generalized
Hodge dual yields precisely the lagrangian of the teleparallel equivalent of
general relativity, and consequently also the Einstein-Hilbert lagrangian of
general relativity.Comment: 8 pages, no figures. Accepted for publication in Journal of Physics
Geometric Parameterization of Absorption in Heavy Ion Collisions
We calculate the survival probability of particles in various
colliding systems using a Glauber model. An analysis of recent data has
reported a -nucleon breakup cross section of 6.20.7 mb derived
from an exponential fit to the ratio of to Drell-Yan yields as a
function of a simple, linearly-averaged mean path length through the nuclear
medium. Our calculations indicate that, due to the nature of the calculation,
this approach yields an apparent breakup cross section which is systematically
lower than the actual value.Comment: LaTex, 7 pages, 2 figure
Eigenvalue Separation in Some Random Matrix Models
The eigenvalue density for members of the Gaussian orthogonal and unitary
ensembles follows the Wigner semi-circle law. If the Gaussian entries are all
shifted by a constant amount c/Sqrt(2N), where N is the size of the matrix, in
the large N limit a single eigenvalue will separate from the support of the
Wigner semi-circle provided c > 1. In this study, using an asymptotic analysis
of the secular equation for the eigenvalue condition, we compare this effect to
analogous effects occurring in general variance Wishart matrices and matrices
from the shifted mean chiral ensemble. We undertake an analogous comparative
study of eigenvalue separation properties when the size of the matrices are
fixed and c goes to infinity, and higher rank analogues of this setting. This
is done using exact expressions for eigenvalue probability densities in terms
of generalized hypergeometric functions, and using the interpretation of the
latter as a Green function in the Dyson Brownian motion model. For the shifted
mean Gaussian unitary ensemble and its analogues an alternative approach is to
use exact expressions for the correlation functions in terms of classical
orthogonal polynomials and associated multiple generalizations. By using these
exact expressions to compute and plot the eigenvalue density, illustrations of
the various eigenvalue separation effects are obtained.Comment: 25 pages, 9 figures include
Geometry of the energy landscape of the self-gravitating ring
We study the global geometry of the energy landscape of a simple model of a
self-gravitating system, the self-gravitating ring (SGR). This is done by
endowing the configuration space with a metric such that the dynamical
trajectories are identified with geodesics. The average curvature and curvature
fluctuations of the energy landscape are computed by means of Monte Carlo
simulations and, when possible, of a mean-field method, showing that these
global geometric quantities provide a clear geometric characterization of the
collapse phase transition occurring in the SGR as the transition from a flat
landscape at high energies to a landscape with mainly positive but fluctuating
curvature in the collapsed phase. Moreover, curvature fluctuations show a
maximum in correspondence with the energy of a possible further transition,
occurring at lower energies than the collapse one, whose existence had been
previously conjectured on the basis of a local analysis of the energy landscape
and whose effect on the usual thermodynamic quantities, if any, is extremely
weak. We also estimate the largest Lyapunov exponent of the SGR using
the geometric observables. The geometric estimate always gives the correct
order of magnitude of and is also quantitatively correct at small
energy densities and, in the limit , in the whole homogeneous
phase.Comment: 20 pages, 12 figure
Geometrical approach to the proton spin decomposition
We discuss in detail and from the geometrical point of view the issues of
gauge invariance and Lorentz covariance raised by the approach proposed
recently by Chen et al. to the proton spin decomposition. We show that the
gauge invariance of this approach follows from a mechanism similar to the one
used in the famous Stueckelberg trick. Stressing the fact that the Lorentz
symmetry does not force the gauge potential to transform as a Lorentz
four-vector, we show that the Chen et al. approach is Lorentz covariant
provided that one uses the suitable Lorentz transformation law. We also make an
attempt to summarize the present situation concerning the proton spin
decomposition. We argue that the ongoing debates concern essentially the
physical interpretation and are due to the plurality of the adopted pictures.
We discuss these different pictures and propose a pragmatic point of view.Comment: 39 pages, 1 figure, updated version to appear in PRD (2013
