Method of preparing radially homogeneous mercury cadmium telluride crystals
Hg(1-x)Cd(x)Te is prepared in an improved directional solidification method in which a precast alloy sample containing predetermined amounts of Hg, Cd, and Te is disposed in a sealed ampule and a furnace providing two controlled temperature zones is translated upward past the ampule to provide melting and resolidification. The present improvement is directed to maintaining the zones at temperatures determined in accordance with a prescribed formula providing a thermal barrier between the zones with a maximum thickness and translating the furnace past the zones at a rate less the 0.31 micron/sec

Possible Lattice Distortions in the Hubbard Model for Graphene
The Hubbard model on the honeycomb lattice is a well known model for
graphene. Equally well known is the Peierls type of instability of the lattice
bond lengths. In the context of these two approximations we ask and answer the
question of the possible lattice distortions for graphene in zero magnetic
field. The answer is that in the thermodynamic limit only periodic,
reflection-symmetric distortions are allowed and these have at most six atoms
per unit cell as compared to two atoms for the undistorted lattice.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure

Vitis vinifera (Vitales: Vitaceae) as a Reproductive Host of Spissistilus festinus (Hemiptera: Membracidae).
Feeding by the three-cornered alfalfa hopper, Spissistilus festinus (Say) (Hemiptera: Membracidae) results in girdling of grapevine petioles and shoots. Its significance as an economic pest of grape has increased since it was shown to transmit Grapevine red blotch virus (GRBV) in a greenhouse study. However, the status of grapevines as a reproductive host for S. festinus remained undetermined. Adult S. festinus were caged onto three regions of the grapevines: apical shoot, green shoot, and dormant cane. Their ability to reproduce was determined by weekly destructive sampling for 7 wk. Successful oviposition and nymphal emergence were observed on apical and green shoots, but not on dormant canes. However, insect development beyond the second nymphal instar did not occur. Knowledge of S. festinus reproduction on grapevines will be an important consideration in designing management guidelines to minimize the spread of GRBV in vineyards
Superburst oscillations: ocean and crustal modes excited by Carbon-triggered Type I X-ray bursts
Accreting neutron stars (NS) can exhibit high frequency modulations in their
lightcurves during thermonuclear X-ray bursts, known as burst oscillations. The
frequencies can be offset from the spin frequency of the NS by several Hz, and
can drift by 1-3 Hz. One possible explanation is a mode in the bursting ocean,
the frequency of which would decrease (in the rotating frame) as the burst
cools, hence explaining the drifts. Most burst oscillations have been observed
during H/He triggered bursts, however there has been one observation of
oscillations during a superburst; hours' long Type I X-ray bursts caused by
unstable carbon burning deeper in the ocean. This paper calculates the
frequency evolution of an oceanic r-mode during a superburst. The rotating
frame frequency varies during the burst from 4-14 Hz, and is sensitive to the
background parameters, in particular the temperature of the ocean and ignition
depth. This calculation is compared to the superburst oscillations observed on
4U-1636-536. The predicted mode frequencies ( 10 Hz) would require a spin
frequency of 592 Hz to match observations; 6 Hz higher than the spin
inferred from an oceanic r-mode model for the H/He triggered burst
oscillations. This model also over-predicts the frequency drift during the
superburst by 90 %.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRA

The basic objectives of the programs, which are in the 28th year of operation nationally, are: (1) to further the professional knowledge of qualified engineering and science faculty members; (2) to stimulate an exchange of ideas between participants and NASA; (3) to enrich and refresh the research and teaching activities of the participants' institutions; and (4) to contribute to the research objectives of the NASA Centers.
