Gaussian ellipsoid model for confined polymer systems

Polymer systems in slab geometries are studied on the basis of the recently presented Gaussian Ellipsoid Model [J. Chem. Phys. 114, 7655 (2001)].The potential of the confining walls has an exponential shape. For homogeneous systems in thermodynamic equilibrium we discuss density, orientation and deformation profiles of the polymers close to the walls. For strongly segregated mixtures of polymer components A and B equilibrium profiles are studied near a planar interface separating A and B rich regions. Spinodal decomposition processes of the mixtures in the presence of neutral walls show upon strong confinement an increase of the lateral size of A and B rich domains and a slowing down of the demixing kinetics. These findings are in agreement with predictions from time dependent Ginzburg--Landau theory. In the case, where one wall periodically favors one of the two mixture components over the other, different equilibrium structures emerge and lead to different kinetic pathways of spinodal decomposition processes in such systems.Comment: 18 pages, 16 figures, submitted to J. Goodness of Fit: an axiomatic approach

    Get PDF
An axiomatic approach is used to develop a one-parameter family of measures of divergence between distributions. These measures can be used to perform goodness-of-fit tests with good statistical properties. Asymptotic theory shows that the test statistics have well-defined limiting distributions which are however analytically intractable. A parametric bootstrap procedure is proposed for implementation of the tests. The procedure is shown to work very well in a set of simulation experiments, and to compare favourably with other commonly used goodness-of-fit tests. By varying the parameter of the statistic, one can obtain information on how the distribution that generated a sample diverges from the target family of distributions when the true distribution does not belong to that family. An empirical application analyses a UK income data set.Goodness of fit; axiomatic approach; measures of divergence; parametric bootstrap

Instrument Choice when Regulators are Concerned about Resource Extinction

    Get PDF
In this paper we undertake a systematic investigation of instrument choice when preventing a population collapse rather than maximizing industry profit is the overriding concern. Contrary to what seems to be the general consensus we find that landing fees do provide more effective insurance against extinction than quotas under more or less the same conditions as those implying that landing fees are better at maximising industry profit. Thus, the efficiency of the regulatory instrument mainly depends on the basic information asymmetries characterizing the fishery, and is not sensitive to whether the regulators total catch goals are set according to economic or precautionary principles.

Who Framed Silicon Valley and Hollywood: Newspaper Coverage of Regional Business Clusters in the San Francisco Bay Area and Southern California

    Get PDF
This study involved coverage of Silicon Valley technology companies and Hollywood entertainment companies in the San Jose Mercury News, Los Angeles Times, and Chicago Tribune. Previous work has suggested that newspaper coverage decisions are influenced by the communities that news organizations serve, journalistic values that can favor corporate interests, and the work of experienced framers of media messages. Silicon Valley and Hollywood are two well-known examples of regional industrial agglomerations, which are clusters of adjacent related businesses that are a powerful form of organization for the deployment of capital and labor. California\u27s technology and entertainment companies have developed strong geographical links and have had a substantial influence on global culture. This study involved a quantitative analysis of business news coverage from the three newspapers and employment data for their metro areas from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Support was found for a connection between the presence of a strong regional agglomeration and the content of business news coverage. Support also was found for an interest regardless of a newspaper\u27s location in covering large technology companies--particularly Apple, Google, and Facebook--that are known as effective framers of media messages

Silicon valley and the new gatekeepers : an institutional view of journalism, technology, and social sharing of news /

Includes vita. The digital disruption of journalism has raised questions about how journalism is supported financially and how citizens get access to news. In this dissertation, a quantitative content analysis and three qualitative textual analyses explored interactions between journalism, Silicon Valley, and citizens from the perspectives of gatekeeping theory, new institutionalism, and the concepts of interactivity and reciprocity. The content analysis concerned Twitter practices by 26 popular online news organizations. The analysis of posts (n = 1,200) found organizational-level differences in the use of technically and socially interactive characteristics of Twitter. Nonetheless, most posts had the purpose related to traditional gatekeeping of promoting news content. This traditional gatekeeping function had a slight negative association with secondary gatekeeping practices as measured by rankings of the number of retweets or likes. The textual analyses indicated that journalists and technologists discursively construct interactions between journalism, Silicon Valley, and citizens, as based on institutional-level concerns of journalism or Silicon Valley. However, these exchanges are described mainly in terms of interactions between individuals or organizations. Furthermore, the relationship is viewed as dependent on societal-level forces, such as different political or economic systems.Dr. Tim P. A critique of the decision in Conisbee that vegetarianism is not ‘a belief’

    Get PDF
Mr G Conisbee v Crossley Farms Ltd & Ors [2019] ET 3335357/2018 was a preliminary hearing to determine whether or not vegetarianism was ‘capable of satisfying the requirement and definition of being a philosophical belief (protected characteristic) under the Equality Act 2010’. Employment Judge Postle held that vegetarianism did not amount to a philosophical belief, comparing it to veganism. It is the latest in the confusing and contradictory case law on the meaning of the term ‘religion or belie’ under English law. This comment contends that not only was the application of the law by the Employment Tribunal suspect but that, at times, the articulation of the law was also questionable. It falls into three sections, closely analysing and critiquing three parts of the judgment in turn. The first and second sections examine the arguments for both sides (as articulated in the judgment) since these explain the approach taken by the Tribunal. The final part then explores the conclusions reached by Employment Judge Postle. Because this section of the judgment is rather cursory, detailed analysis of what the Tribunal says about the arguments of counsel for both sides is needed in order to understand the decision given. All three parts of the judgment contain questionable statements of law and the applications of law. This suggests that the decision needs to be appealed, because it has the potential to create further confusion in an area of the law which is already mired in uncertainty
