    Maize Production Impacts on Groundwater Quality

    The cumulative effects of management practices on nitrate-nitrogen (NO3-N) leaching and ground water quality are frequently difficult to document because of the time required for expression and the diversity of interacting process involved. This work reports results of a N and water management program initiated by the Central Platte Natural Resource District (CPNRD) in Nebraska. Cultural pratices recommended by the (CPNRD) in Nebraska. Cultural practices recommended by the CPNRD and reported by producers for the 1988 growing season, representing approximately 3900 fields covering 84 210 ha of irrigated corn (Zea mays L.) indicated NO3-N contamination of groundwater was influenced by yield goals and fertilizer N application rates. Groundwater NO2-N concentrations were positively correlated with residual N in the surface 0.9 m of soil prior to the growing season, reflecting the effects of past N and water management practices. Yield goals in 1988 averaged 9% higher than the average 10.0 Mg ha-1 corn yield attained, which accounts for an average of about 20 kg N ha-1 in excess of the average N recommendation. By comparison, in a 1980 to 1984 study from an area within the CPNRD, yield goals in 1988 accounted for 42% of the average excess N application rate of 48 kg ha-1 (based on University of Nebraska recommendations). A large portion of average excess N application is attributed to producers in 14% of the area who applied \u3e100 kg N ha-1 more than the recommended rates. Fertilizer N applied showed little relationship to fertilizer N recommended. Better education and more stringent measures may be required to address the select group of producers who fail to follow CPNRD recommendations

    Supercurrent in a mesoscopic proximity wire

    Recent experiments on the proximity induced supercurrent in mesoscopic normal wires revealed a surprising temperature dependence. They suggest clean-limit behavior although the wires are strongly disordered. We demonstrate that this unexpected scaling is actually contained in the conventional description of diffusive superconductors and find excellent agreement with the experimental results.     Microcyclospora and Microcyclosporella: novel genera accommodating epiphytic fungi causing sooty blotch on apple

    Recent studies have found a wide range of ascomycetes to be associated with sooty blotch and flyspeck (SBFS) blemishes on the surfaces of pomaceous fruits, specifically apples. Based on collections of such fungi from apple orchards in Germany and Slovenia we introduce two novel genera according to analyses of morphological characters and nuclear ribosomal DNA sequences (large subunit and internal transcribed spacer regions). Microcyclosporella is represented by a single species, M. mali, and is presently known from Germany and Slovenia. Microcyclosporella is Pseudocercosporella-like in morphology, but genetically and morphologically distinct from Pseudocercosporella s.str., for which an epitype is designated based on a fresh collection of P. bakeri from Laos. Furthermore, Pseudocercosporella is shown to be paraphyletic within the Capnodiales. Microcyclospora gen. nov. is Pseudocercospora-like in morphology, but is genetically and morphologically distinct from Pseudocercospora s.str., which is based on P. vitis. Three species, Microcyclospora malicola, M. pomicola (both collected in Germany), and M. tardicrescens (collected in Slovenia) are described. Finally, a new species of Devriesia, D. pseudoamericana, is described from pome fruit surfaces collected in Germany. Devriesia is shown to be paraphyletic, and to represent several lineages of which only Devriesia s.str. is thermotolerant. Further collections are required, however, before the latter generic complex can be resolved

    The first issue of Artificial Intelligence and Law journal was published in 1992. This paper provides commentaries on nine significant papers drawn from the Journal’s second decade. Four of the papers relate to reasoning with legal cases, introducing contextual considerations, predicting outcomes on the basis of natural language descriptions of the cases, comparing different ways of representing cases, and formalising precedential reasoning. One introduces a method of analysing arguments that was to become very widely used in AI and Law, namely argumentation schemes. Two relate to ontologies for the representation of legal concepts and two take advantage of the increasing availability of legal corpora in this decade, to automate document summarisation and for the mining of arguments

    Multiplicative renormalizability and quark propagator

    The renormalized Dyson-Schwinger equation for the quark propagator is studied, in Landau gauge, in a novel truncation which preserves multiplicative renormalizability. The renormalization constants are formally eliminated from the integral equations, and the running coupling explicitly enters the kernels of the new equations. To construct a truncation which preserves multiplicative renormalizability, and reproduces the correct leading order perturbative behavior, non-trivial cancellations involving the full quark-gluon vertex are assumed in the quark self-energy loop. A model for the running coupling is introduced, with infrared fixed point in agreement with previous Dyson-Schwinger studies of the gauge sector, and with correct logarithmic tail. Dynamical chiral symmetry breaking is investigated, and the generated quark mass is of the order of the extension of the infrared plateau of the coupling, and about three times larger than in the Abelian approximation, which violates multiplicative renormalizability. The generated scale is of the right size for hadronic phenomenology, without requiring an infrared enhancement of the running coupling.Comment: 17 pages; minor corrections, comparison to lattice results added; accepted for publication in Phys.     Comparison of Mass Wasting Processes on Vesta and Ceres

    The Dawn mission has significantly enhanced our understanding regarding surface and subsurface geological processes on Vesta and Ceres. The ample amount of high resolution imaging and spectral data has improved our knowledge with respect to formation of small bodies, their evolution and current state [7, 12, 2, 17]. Earlier studies of mass movements on Vesta focus on the southern latitudes where the giant Rheasilvia impact basin is responsible for a high topographic relief representing ideal mass wasting conditions [8,9]. On Ceres, fluidized mass movement helped to assert the presence of water ice at shallow subsurface at global scale [15,3,6]. Using above finding as a base, we extend these studies by classifying [10] and comparing the mass movement behavior under similar gravity but compositionally different conditions present on Vesta and Ceres. Vesta being dry [7] and Ceres with water ice on shallow surface [17] may introduce differences within its landslide properties

    Survey of nucleon electromagnetic form factors

    A dressed-quark core contribution to nucleon electromagnetic form factors is calculated. It is defined by the solution of a Poincare' covariant Faddeev equation in which dressed-quarks provide the elementary degree of freedom and correlations between them are expressed via diquarks. The nucleon-photon vertex involves a single parameter; i.e., a diquark charge radius. It is argued to be commensurate with the pion's charge radius. A comprehensive analysis and explanation of the form factors is built upon this foundation. A particular feature of the study is a separation of form factor contributions into those from different diagram types and correlation sectors, and subsequently a flavour separation for each of these. Amongst the extensive body of results that one could highlight are: r_1^{n,u}>r_1^{n,d}, owing to the presence of axial-vector quark-quark correlations; and for both the neutron and proton the ratio of Sachs electric and magnetic form factors possesses a zero.Comment: 43 pages, 17 figures, 12 tables, 5 appendice
