Pitfalls and potential of institutional change: Rain-index insurance and the sustainability of rangeland management

Rain-index insurance is strongly advocated in many parts of the developing world to help farmers to cope with climatic risk that prevail in (semi-)arid rangelands due to low and highly uncertain rainfall. We present a modeling analysis of how the availability of rain-index insurance affects the sustainability of rangeland management. We show that a rain-index insurance with frequent payos, i.e. a high strike level, leads to the choice of less sustainable grazing management than without insurance available. However, a rain-index insurance with a low to medium strike level enhances the farmer's well-being while not impairing the sustainability of rangeland management.ecological-economic modeling, weather-index insurance, Namibia, grazing management, risk, sustainability, weather-based derivatives

Auf dem Weg zur digitalen Stadt – Aufbau der digitalen Planungsinfrastruktur Hamburg

In dem „Zentralen Planungsinformationssystem Hamburg“ (PLIS-HH) werden rechtsgültige digitale georeferenzierte Planwerke des Bau- und Planungsrechtes (verbindliche und vorbereitende Bauleitpläne auf Basis des Baugesetzbuches (BauGB) / Bundesbaugesetzes (BBauG); Planwerke auf Basis alten Planrechts: Baustufenpläne, Durchführungspläne, Teilbebauungspläne; Erhaltungsverordnungen nach §172 BauGB und Gestaltungverordnungen nach §12 Hamburgische Bauordnung (HBauO)) erfasst und als Bestandteil der Geodateninfrastruktur der Freien und Hansestadt Hamburg (FHH) zentral in einer Geofachdatenhaltungskomponente in einer einheitlichen semantischen Struktur vorgehalten. Diese zentrale Datenhaltung erlaubt gleichzeitig eine dezentrale Fortführung und Pflege der Datenbestände durch den jeweiligen Sachbearbeiter an seinem Arbeitsplatz, setzt aber die Entwicklung und Einrichtung vereinheitlichter und abgestimmter Datenaustausch- und Aktualisierungsprozesse voraus. Damit ist gewährleistet, dass alle in der FHH vorgehaltenen Auskunfts- und Monitoringsysteme, Beteiligungs- und Baugenehmigungsverfahren, die Bauleitpläne und sonstigen Verordnungen als Informationsbasis benötigen, eine einheitliche Datenbasis zur Verfügung haben. Eine arbeitsaufwändige Recherche nach aktuellem Planrecht und die damit verbundene Aktualisierung der Datenhaltung für die unterschiedlichen Fachinformationssysteme können somit zukünftig entfallen

Synthesis Of Biodegradable Star-Shaped Polymers Using Bio-Based Polyols Via Ring-Opening Polymerization Of Β-Butyrolactone With Amido-Oxazolinate Zinc Catalysts

A new series of star-shaped and highly branched poly(β-hydroxybutyrates) (PHBs) with a distinct structure was synthesized by ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of β-butyrolactone (BBL) with amido-oxazolinate zinc catalysts. The ROP of BBL using multifunctional hydroxyl-terminated initiators is an efficient methodology that allowed the preparation of PHBs with not only well-controlled molecular weights (Mn) and narrow dispersity (Đ), but also well-defined end-functional groups. Furthermore, the modifications of star-shaped and highly branched PHBs resulted in various architectures with tailored properties for many applications particularly for the biomedical field. Star-shaped structure is constructed via a core-first approach, in which the multi-functional alcohols will serve as the initiator for ROP. Specifically, three-, four-, and multi-armed star polymers were obtained and thoroughly characterized by various techniques such as nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, gel permeation chromatography (GPC), and their thermal and mechanical properties were investigated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). These properties were compared with the linear PHBs since it is expected that branched architectures may have different features. Moreover, the impact of the arm numbers and the arm lengths was studied on thermal properties of the obtained star-shaped PHBs, which strongly depended upon their arm numbers and arm lengths

Relating the philosophy and practice of ecological economics: The role of concepts, models, and case studies in inter- and transdisciplinary sustainability research

We develop a comprehensive multi-level approach to ecological economics (CML-approach) which integrates philosophical considerations on the foundations of ecological economics with an adequate operationalization. We argue that the subject matter and aims of ecological economics require a specific combination of inter- and transdisciplinary research, and discuss the epistemological position on which this approach is based. In accordance with this understanding of inter- and transdisciplinarity and the underlying epistemological position, we develop an operationalization which comprises simultaneous analysis on three levels of abstraction: concepts, models and case studies. We explain these levels in detail, and, in particular, deduce our way of generic modeling in this context. Finally, we illustrate the CML-approach and demonstrate its fruitfulness by the example of the sustainable management of semi-arid rangelands. --ecological economics,interdisciplinarity,philosophy of science,transdisciplinarity

Beschäftigungsoption Selbstständigkeit?! : Zur Integration des Gründungsthemas in die sozialwissenschaftliche Lehre am Beispiel der Johann Wolfgang-Goethe-Universität Frankfurt am Main

Das Thema 'Unternehmensgründung/ berufliche Selbstständigkeit an deutschen Hochschulen' hat seit Mitte der 1990er Jahre zunehmend an Bedeutung gewonnen, denn es wird beabsichtigt, eine Kultur der Unternehmensgründung an den Hochschulen zu etablieren und die Studierenden auf eine berufliche Selbstständigkeit als potenzielle Zukunftsperspektive vorzubereiten. Auch der Gesetzgeber integrierte in den letzten Jahren die Gründungsfrage in den Handlungsauftrag der Universitäten, z.B. im neuen hessischen Hochschulgesetz. Der vorliegende Aufsatz berichtet über eine Untersuchung am Fachbereich Gesellschaftswissenschaften der Universität Frankfurt am Main mit dem Titel 'Gründung als Option für Sozialwissenschaften: Zur Integration des Gründungsthemas in der Lehre der Sozialwissenschaften'. Es wurde danach gefragt, in welcher Weise Studierende und Promovierende der Gesellschaftswissenschaften (Soziologie und Politikwissenschaft) im Rahmen ihres Studiums auf mögliche Tätigkeitsfelder einer selbstständigen Beschäftigung hingewiesen werden können und wie sie selbst solche Angebote beurteilen. Es werden einige Sichtweisen zur Gründung als persönliches Motiv und zur Berufsorientierung in den Sozialwissenschaften vorgestellt, die spezifischen Qualifikationsmerkmale des sozialwissenschaftlichen Studiums umrissen und einige Empfehlungen zur Beschäftigungsoption 'Selbständigkeit' gegeben. A Clock-independent Model for Real-Time

A new approach for modelling time that does not rely on the concept of a clock is proposed. In order to establish a notion of time, system behaviour is represented as a joint progression of multiple threads of control, which satisfies a certain set of axioms. We show that the clock-independent time model is related to the well-known concept of a global clock and argue that both approaches establish the same notion of time
